Neptune's OOB surface
« on: April 20, 2008, 01:59:18 PM »
Is the Neptune's surface the same 1500 polished as the Storm's 1500 polished?  I know Storm owns/markets/etc. Roto Grip.

Also, does anybody here have their 'tune at 2000 Abralon?  If so, what's the hook like compared to OOB?

Thanks!

Roto is owned and made by Storm, so yes, 1500-grit polished RG balls probably have the same Step 1/Step 2 finish as the 1500-grit polished Storm balls.

A bud of mine suggested hitting my Neptune with 2000 or 4000 grit to tame the backend down.  FOr my style the Neptune is pretty angular when it reaches the backend.

If you do it, hopefully you wouldn't mind posting your observations...???

That's what I've found with all equipment that has the Storm 1500 polished box finish.  I used my Spit Fire at the box finish for awhile, but it was just too hard for me to control.  My mom's Tropical Storm was stupidly angular -- it looked like somebody kicked it left 45 feet down the lane.  2000 or 4000 without polish gives you slightly less length, but it handles carrydown better and is more more controllable and smooth off the breakpoint.  I also find the same to be true with Ebonite's 4000 + polish box finish.  I had to take the polish off my Total NV to get a little smoother reaction, but it's still incredibly strong off the dry boards in the back.

Well thats what storm is known for, "Long and Strong!" Anything pearl from storm I have to put the pin up at least 2 inches to tame it.

Putting the pin up will make it longer and stronger (more backend). Putting the pin 2" further away from the PAP will make it flare less and be weaker, especially the Neptune.

Maybe it's just a matter of jargon.

I already usually put the pin 6 inches away from my pap. All I have is to put a higher pin on it.

Just knocking the factory polish off anything I've gotten from Storm has really tamed it down and made it more controllable and versatile for me.

I've tried a 4000 grit matte finish on several brands of polished pearls (AMF, Brunswick, Columbia, Roto-Grip, Lane#1) which are finished either 1500 or 2000 grit polished. In most cases, so far, the 4000 grit finish gives a similar usability, with results likes Dan's: slightly less length, smoother breakpoint, less susceptible to carrydown. The Lane#1 ball needed a 2000 grit matte finish to get that smoothness.
