Current ball in Roto's line-up......
« on: August 21, 2009, 01:48:25 AM »
Question: Is there a ball in Roto's current line-up that gives a similar downlane motion as the Horizon Solid?

I currently use my HZ all the time. It is my benchmark ball, but knowing that it's discontinued, I might like to try something that's new that is comparable.

Pluto wouldn't be remotely close to the Horizon Solid. The Nomad Solid should be close in hook potential but will have more length and be a little more angular off the break.

I concur.  If you take a Nomad Solid down to 2000 abralon it will be a slightly stronger Horizon Solid.

In my opinion, the closest thing to the Horizon Solid currently produced in Utah would be the Dimension.

Im confused... I agree that the nomad solid would have a similar hook potential but NOT the same downlane motion that was asked for. I think both would work but I thought based on numbers that the pluto was closer.... but I could be wrong as I havent thrown them.

as I see it:

N.S.    49 hook  14 length  16.5 backend
pluto   49 hook  11 length  14.5 backend
H.S.   49 hook  12 length  14.5 backend

The Pluto is really weak, high RG, extremely low diff and a weak cover. There is easily 10 boards difference in overall hook between the two, even if the motion off the break is similar they can't compare. Now take the Nomad Solid, drill it to be a little roller off the break and knock the surface down a little and you've have something similar in overall hook and ball motion throughout the whole lane.

My pluto flies and is only about 10 boards below my cell. I would say the pluto would be the right ball. If left at its OOB it is a lot stronger than people think...

Have you looked at the Grand Illusion? Same core, same specs. I flat out love mine and am looking forward to using it this fall on the league patterns.

i agree with the Grand Illusion, that would defiantly be a good replacement for the Horizon Solid.

The Grand Illusion has similar core, but different specs! The Horizon was lower RG with higher Diff. The Pluto is a solid, but it's a higher RG and low Diff. Horizon Solid specs:
Specifications

Factory Finish 800- Machine Sanded
Track Flare Potential 5 Inches
Lane Condition Medium - Heavy Oil
Cover Stock Ultimate Griptm Reactive
Weight Block Heliostm Core

Core Dynamics
WEIGHTS RG DIFFERENTIAL
16 lb. 2.46 (Low) .048 (High)
15 lb. 2.47 (Low) .052 (High)
14 lb. 2.49 (Low) .051 (High)
12-13 lb. 2.60 (High) .032 (Med)
10-11 lb. 2.67 (High) .018 (Med)

Grand Illusion specs:
Core: Helios II Core (14 – 16lb) Modified Helios II core (12 – 13lb)
- Finish: 2000 Polished
- RG Differential: 0.042 (Medium Flare) on a scale of .000-.080 Low Flare-High Flare
- RG Average: 2.53 (Med-Low) on a scale of 2.43-2.80 Very Low-High
Recommended Lane Condition: Medium to Light Oil

Pluto specs:
Hook Potential: 2" (Low) on a scale of 1-10 Low-High
RG Differential: 0.020 (Low Flare) on a scale of .000-.080 Low Flare-High Flare
RG Average: 2.6 (Medium-High) on a scale of 2.43-2.80 Very Low-High Break Point
Recommended Lane Conditions: Medium Oil

Nomad specs:
  - Coverstock: Ultra Vision Solid Reactive
- Weight Block: Rotary Core
- Ball Color: Neon Green / Black
- Ball Finish: 1500 Polished
- Flare Potential: 5+ inches (Med-High)
- RG: 16#-2.52, 15#-2.55, 14#-2.57, 13#-2.66, 12#-2.66
- RG Differential: 16#-0.049, 15#-0.054, 14#-0.046, 13#-0.037, 12#-0.037
The Nomad is by far stronger than people realize! The cover stock is what makes this ball great, plus the high differential does help a lot!
Nomad cover stock:
The Ultra Vision coverstock is bred from the original Sure Grip coverstock, but with friction enhancing additives that have given us great success with some of our other coverstock blends like the original Cytoplasmic, Cytoplasmic X, and the recent Cytoplasmic XL. This combination of enhanced friction and performance proven core technology is sure to please. This will be the most highly sought after weapon of choice.
I have the Horizon Solid and two Nomad solids and the Nomad has the strongest break point, plus they're easier to find! The Pluto is a great ball as well, but it doesn't have the break point of the Nomad, G.I., or Horizon!
