More surface on an RS-X?
« on: January 10, 2006, 05:16:23 AM »
Has anyone taken a green scotchbrite to the surface of their RS-X?  If so, were you happy with the results and on what conditions did it excel on?

I have my RS-X drilled 4" x 5.5" (Pin & MB).  This ball offers me little to no recovery on errant shots.  I think I am throwing it through the breakpoint as I have above average speed and power (but my speed outweighs my amount of revs).  Our house is putting down a ton of oil up front, but after 41' the backends are pretty clean through the first game and a half.  I am getting some reaction on the backend, but is seems to be too little too late.  When I do get to the pocket, I leave a lot of 10 pins (probably because the ball is skidding too far down the lane).  I have tried slowing my entire approach and release down which works on and off, but then I start missing my mark pretty bad as my timing gets screwed-up.

I put surface on the RSX for a guy who was throwing the ball past the breakpoint.  With surface, the ball works great for him.  Just the right length and a good snap.

I scuffed mine to around 800, and I really don't like the reaction at all. THe high diff. really shows with the extra surface. Therefore since the energy is being exerted in the midlane, you lose just about all reaction off the backends. Unless you plan on using it for heavy oil and squaring up, I wouldn't reccomend it. But try it, its nothing a little polish can't fix

Well, I just finished applying Clean 'N Smooth using my spinner.  The RS-X looks pretty good.  It put a 1500 smooth finish on it.  I had been using Reacta Shine on it to preserve the highly polished finish but the ball has been too squirty for me.  Hopefully this surface change will be for the better.  I'll know Friday night...
All I ask is that it grab the lane about 1-2' earlier than it has been and I should be good to go.

Just a friendly word of caution:

If you press a little too long or a little too hard, Clean and Smooth will begin to put a shine over the 1500 grit matte fiinish that it normally leaves.
Just keep a sharp eye peeled, be careful and you'll have no problems.

Thanks for the advice.  I'm pretty sure I applied it correctly as it knocked the high gloss shine off.  Now it looks like my NIB Track Phenom that I have here.

I hope it works out for me tomorrow night.
