"Sonic X" vs "Sonic Boom" vs "Ultra Sonic"
« on: March 05, 2005, 04:53:30 PM »
Has anybody thrown all 3 of these balls?

How do these 3 balls compare... as far as length and backend?

How many boards difference are they from one another?

Is there any real reason to have all 3?

Should you go from your big flaring, big backending pearl reactive ball down to the Ultra, then to the Boom, then to the Sonic X... or go from the big flaring, big backending pearl reactive ball down to the Ultra, then to the Sonix X and just forget the Sonic Boom?

And how strong is the backend of the Ultra Sonic compared to the Sonic X?

Oh, and I forgot to add that I know a guy that's had a couple of 800's this year with Roto Grip stuff and he says that the Sonic Boom has more backend than the Ultra Sonic... but by looking at the specs, I find that hard to believe. Is he right, or is he wrong?

Ric, I can answer 2/3rds of your question.  The Sonic X is truely a dry lane to very light oil and has decent hit depending on how much hand you have.  The Sonic Boom is about 5-6 boards stronger and can be thrown on MOST typical house shots (light to medium outside) if the backends are crisp and there isn't alot of carrydown.  This ball DOESN'T require a lot of hand, it will hit well for strokers, keeps the pins low with nice even roll. Last year I went 789 the first time out with it (30 out of 36 X 5 pin split in the middle of game 2 cost me)THE BALL DOESN'T LIKE OIL UNLESS YOU ARE A CRANKER AND EVEN THEN IT WILL DEFLECT.  Hope this helps, just my observation.

Ric,

Even though the RG's are the same and the differential is higher in the Ultra Sonic, that doesn't mean you should see more backend.  The high differential means the ball will flare more and it wants to start hooking sooner.  Doesn't always mean more backend.  The Core and Cover on the Sonic Boom are an absolute perfect match up.  This ball by far is my favorite Roto Grip ball, (Oracle Vision is not far behind).  With my medium ball speed and higher rev rate I use this ball on most house patterns when they aren't too slick.  I can strike for most of the night with it, due to its extreme length and backend movement.  Believe it or not this ball has a very strong backend for me, even with only .029 differential.  This is because it skids so far down the lane storing energy, when it is ready to hook it flat out hooks.

I was having carry issues with it last week and forgot to practice what I preach.

I took it to the shop and sanded it to 600 and put a light coat of Storm Reacta Shine on it and the ball worked like a charm again.  I had left two pocket 7-10 splits with it the week before and I remembered I hadn't touched the surface in about 80 games.  (Bad Roger)

Mustang guy.

I forgot whether you are left or right handed?

Also thank you for giving info on surface finish.
I find my Sonic X works on one house and doesn't due to different length oil.

Yep, Roger is a lefty!

Ric,

I don't really see a reason for all 3, the original and one of the others would be great though!  I think you could see a 3 to 5 board difference between the Original and the Boom or Ultra ...don't think there is enough difference to have both the Boom and the Ultra, ...they'd probably cover the same conditions, but just w/ a different shape ....

Mark brings up a great point...

The Sonic line is more versatile than one thinks...especially when you could very easily take the Super Sonic and scuff it to 600 smooth and cover some fairly heavy / fresh mediums w/ the proper drill.....

That way you could have a 3 ball arsenal all w/ Sonics if you thought about it and set them up properly!
