Prepping for Sport Shot League - what do I need?
« on: February 26, 2004, 04:18:46 PM »
I'm looking to add/replace a ball in my arsenal in preparation for a sport shot league this summer.  I'm thinking Roto is the way I want to go, but I'm not sure which ball I'd need, if any.  Here's what I currently have:

  • Truck, control drill with a dull finish

  • X-Factor drilled on the aggressive side out of box finish

  • Sonic X, control drill with out of box finish

  • Burgundy Hammer as my spare ball

Are there any obvious holes in this lineup?  Is the Truck as bad as everyone keeps telling me?  I just gave it the Hook Again treatment, and it seems to be working quite nicely for me.  Should I look to replace it with a Silver Streak Particle or the Solid maybe?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Wait till you shoot on the shot before you make an evaluation. It also depends on the type of pattern they are going to put out. (oil volume and length of pattern) You have a good spectrum stuff there. I might suggest a plastic or polyester for spares. That burgundy hammer might suprise you and it could end up being your strike ball. No the truck is not that bad actually its a very good ball. It was the last real work Mo Pinel did at hammer. Good Luck

Nollster, Sonic X Solid may not be a bad choice either.....drill it strong like 4x4.......it's NOT going to snap and should read really smooth......however, I'd see the shot first as previously mentioned...

I kind of figured about the Truck.....Won't miss it -- I bought it used for cheap when I was just going to bowl occassionally with my son.  Didn't plan on getting addicted although I should know better by now!!  With the sport shot, do I want to keep the ball reaction pretty smooth?  That's the way the Truck and Sonic X move for me....I'm curious to see how the X-Factor will be....

You're always better off having a smoother transition ball on a tougher condition........

Jeff -

With that in mind, would the Rush or Pure Fuel be good options?  I'm trying to trade a set of clubs for a ball and the person seems to be more willing to go high end with a little cash than mid range and more cash.  By the way, thanks for taking Maddux off our hands!!  Now the Braves got nuthin'!!

Saw in your profile that you're a Cubbies fan -- Greg Maddux signed on with them last week.....

He wasn't for the Braves either.  We'll still probably win the East and choke in the playoffs!!  Think I'll switch back to the O's this year -- at least they went out and got some people!!

Id get plastic before anything else unless you are good using resins/particles for spares. Im not that familiar with the Truck but from what I have seen and heard that ball is not that special. Here is what I would do. Go for the first 2 weeks with what you have and if you can score, no new equipment is in order. On the other hand if you do not score look at what people who are scoring that have a game similiar to your game and see what balls/drills they are using. I see you have two pearl balls one being aggressive (X Factor) and the other being rather tame (Sonic X) my thinking would be to look into a low rg solid reactive (Super Charge, V2 Sanded, or a Rush). Hope this helps.

It sure does.....I'm currently using my Burgundy Hammer for spares and, as long as it's not too dry, I don't have any problems there.  Even if it gets dry, I can break the wrist a little for the corners.  I think the Rush is what I'll be looking at since I'm kind of partial to Roto.....

Jeff -

Looks like I have a done deal and the Rush will soon be coming.  I see that you were recommending a 4x3 drill to some and Bob Hylka used a 3.5x4 drill.  Is this the type of drill I want to stay with for wetter conditions?

Jim, I like 4x3 personally, Northface28 and myself were discussing this ball and that a 4 inch pin would 'probably' be the longest pin from pap you'd want if you want this ball of it's intended condition.

I don't really think us 'mortals' would see a huge difference in those 2 drills. Those 2 would work better on wetter, ...a 4x2 would be an option as well, and if you liked stacked leverage, 3 3/8 x 3 3/8 would be ok too..
