Purchase a Mutant Cell?
« on: March 01, 2010, 06:45:05 AM »
Hey everyone...I''m looking into purchasing a Mutant Cell. I''ve wanted this ball, since I first started seeing things and reading thing about it. I throw about 5 different balls, all of which, react differently. What I have yet to have, is a ball that can go long and still come in strong in the pocket.

I''ve read a lot and seen a lot about the Mutant Cell and it''s hook and it''s coverstock. However...I was wondering, if there was a way to drill the Mutant Cell, in such a way it would break late and still come into the pocket...or if the OOB finish would allow that.

If anyone could help me determine rather or not this ball would be right for me, I''d really appreciate it.

Thanks

For my style the spinners dream layout from the drilling instructions works that way
my avg its 203 rev rate around 380 and a 18 mph(avg)
with my pap the ball ended up with pin under middle finger and mb about 2 3/4" to the right of the thumb
this gives me a clean motion thru 45 ft and then bang the ball comes crazy of the spot from any angle...
its something like the ball rolled in bowlingball.com mutant cell review( the second bowler)

Are you a stroker, tweener, or cranker?  Ball speed?  Lane conditions you bowl on?

The mutant cell will give him length if drilled in up and polished. Just keep it clean and you will be ok!

Bowler103859....

I took a peak to see what you have in your arsenal which is:
IN THE BAG: EBONITE-MISSION, HAMMER-JIGSAW, STORM-VIRTUAL GRAVITY, BRUNSWICK-IMPULSE ZONE, EBONITE-MAXIM
I have the Mutant cell and I can tell you it is a strong ball for most patterns that you will face. I see a lot of Jigsaw's and Virtual Gravity's and they need oil in the head areas to score well. My opinion, for what it is worth is that you will not benefit that much buying a Mutant. The main reason is that you have a lot of strong equipment already that have similar coverstocks and strong cores. A ball like the Nomad solid or a ball similar ball might fill holes in your arsenal when the lanes go through transition. More of a good all around ball than condition spefic. If you decide to purchase a Mutant and want it to "break late and still come into the pocket." To give you drill for this type of reaction would be to keep the pin above the ring finger or fingers and the MB close to the right of the thumb hole for right handers. Even with this type of layout the Mutant will save up a lot of  energy on the back end.

i have had my mutant for a couple of weeks and after redrilling, polishing, and then to 1000,I have ,I think, realized where this ball works best. I have slower speeed and lower revs and for me this ball works when i get more tilt and play it as close to the pocket as possible.
Not swinging and not playing out with it,because it over reacts. I have to play it in the oil up 17 to 15 at the arrows. I watched the ball shot after shot burry the pins. Once i made this move i thru the back 7 and i had previously not been able to get it to the pocket let alone strike. For me its not a big boomer, but a finisher. You know when you are bowling and you can swing the ball and carry and then you get inside and leave the 10 pin, this is the ball for that shot. Tight and consistent and this ball kills.Unfortunately for me I am not that consistent. If you are,and you need something in the soup to kick out the ten,no destroy the 10 ,this is the ball for you.

This is not the ball for you if you want late breaking action.  I usually bowl on older synthetic surfaces in my area, and I can tell you I don't bother using my Mutant Cell unless there is 40ft+ of oil or carry down.  On a THS, I see strokers have the most success playing up the oil line with this ball.

The core + coverstock are designed to flip as soon as it sniffs friction.  I wouldn't modify what its designed for to get your desired reaction and instead look at something like a Nomad Pearl.

If you want late angular reaction, check out the Cell Pearl.

I throw about 14 mph, medium revs, nothing fancy.  Play either 3 or 4th arrow, right handed.

I got the Mutant about 2 months ago, and before I even threw it, I took it to 4000, no polish.  The houses I bowl at seldomly put down heavy oil, but taking it to 4000 made it very usable for me.  I love this ball and it is my absolute favorite.
