Replacement for the RG Mutant Cell Solid and Mutant Cell Pearl
« on: December 12, 2012, 08:32:09 PM »
I absolutely love the RG Mutant Cell Solid and pearl.  Which balls from the current Roto lineup should I select to replace these gems?

Thanks!

Defiant and Defiant Edge will be the closest from the current lineup.  Both will be stronger than their older counterparts, so you may just need to adjust the surface a bit.

You could always consider the Critical Theory to replace the Mutant Cell Pearl, but you may need to add a lot of polish as it handles more oil and is much stronger on the back.

I think that the Defiants are much earlier and require much more oil than the Mutant Cells Series. While they're in the current line-up, I don't think they're close at all. The Mutants were closest in general reaction to the Virtual Gravity (not the Nano). I think the former top of the line, the Theorys were closer in ball reaction to the Mutants.

I'd wonder if you couldn't get two Critcal Theories, using one dull and one polished, with drillings and surfaces, according to your release and the oil handling ability desired, to make them emulate the Mutants??

I wouldnt go against charlest on this one but...but...but i have had the mutants..and both defiants...and i feel once you have some games on new defiants they kinda tame down quite a bit, and actually do compare to the previous lines...

I felt the theory line rolled much better than mutant cell line, for sure, but most of the roto fans have a lot fun throwing the defiant line, they are buddies "go-to" balls...the only difference i notice is a much higher entry angle in the pocket...and im a few boards left shot to shot house to house.

My vote is the defiant and defiant edge...but drill them accordingly.  Looking back i would have made my layouts less flippy.

Bill,

My only thing against the Defiants is they're too rolly and too early. I suspect it's one of those balls with particles that are unadvertised. They seem to take either a lot of oil or a lot of ball speed to use them properly. It's so easy to leave a lot of flat 10 pins, when you're lucky, worse when you're not lucky.

I've never seen either the solid or the pearl Defiant have a strong backend or even close to it. I've seen both Mutants and Theorys have a fairly strong backend, even with a non-polished surface.

To my eye, the Mutants had a stronger backend, more like the Virtual Gravity. My Theory was much like that with dulll and polished surfaces and with 2 different drillings. That's why I felt the Theory and potentially the Critical Theory would be closer to the Mutants.

While I suspect the Critical can fill this dual roll, I can't guarantee it.

Id say after our discussion i would

1. Start with a critical...decide if its going to be your "dull" or your "polished"...

2. Pick a ball to be its counterpart.
