Surface change with polish
« on: March 09, 2009, 05:42:21 AM »
My question is about a change in ball reaction for a Cell Pearl. The OOB is at 4000 with polish. Has anybody tried a lower grit with polish and what difference did you see. My Pearl is going a little long before getting to the pocket and leaving too many flat 10's. I was wondering if lowering the grit but still keep it polished would start hooking just a liitle sooner. I would consider my shot to be a tweener, about 17-18 MPH with my preferred line being down and in.

I thought OOB was 1500 polished?

It is.  But it isn't all that different from the 4000 abralon plus polish surface you get from other manufacturer's balls (since the 1500 grit approximation is on the CAMI scale, not abralon's FEPA, so it's not as big a difference as it sounds like).

I personally can't stand ANY Storm/Roto polished ball in it's OOB surface.  Way too long and oil-allergic for me.  With the Second Dimension (a ball that is very similar to the Cell Pearl really), I opted for 2000 abralon plus a lighter coat of polish.  I actually applied the polish by hand to keep it from getting too shiny.  This gives me a lot more midlane reaction.  It's a couple boards stronger overall, but much more controllable, and it gives me a much better entry angle for better carry.

OOB it is supposed to be 1500 grit polished. I took mine down to 1000 grit polished and it does read the lanes earlier than with the out of box finish, while still retaining enough energy at the pins to carry the ten pin.

Mine is at 4000 abralon, no polish and it works great for my game.

I liked the ball oob at 1500 + polish. What I have done now is as the ball has needed repolishing, since I have about 125 games on it, I have been polishing it with particle polish which helps keep the pours open more. It gives it a great read. A lot smoother but still with the big backend but not so flippy anymore.

The Cell Pearl actually comes OOB with 1500 grit polish, not 4000 per your original post. The Rogue Cell is the only ball in the Crown Line that comes OOB at 4000. Original Cell is 2000.

Your best bet is to scuff up some of the polish, either with a gray/green scotchbrite pad or a worn 4000 Abralon pad. Do it very lightly (the ball shouldn't look much different when you're done).

If you end up screwing it up or don't like it, you can get back to the 1500 grit polish by applying Storm Step 2 (http://www.stormbowling.com/shop/maintenance/41).
