Nomad and Mars...
« on: October 20, 2009, 02:18:00 AM »
I've had these two balls since the second week of league (mid-Aug.) and have kinda struggled with both.  I've been busy for the past two months and haven't really been able to practice or work on the balls (change the cover) and my average was about 10 pins or so lower than what it was last season.  Well, I finally got around to dicking with the covers of both balls and all I can say is...yeh, baby!!!

I knocked the polish off of both...hit the Nomad with 2000 abralon and the Mars with 4000.  World of difference!  No more inconsistency with either, no more shooting through the break, no more screaming off the one dry spot on the lane.  The Nomad now starts to read the mid like it should and makes a hard, continuous move through the pin deck.  The Mars still gets down the lane well but doesn't jump of the dry or scoot through the breakpoint if any oil has been carried down.

I think several folks in my league are going to accuse me of 'bagging the first quarter but I really didn't...a couple of weeks I didn't even break 500.  I rolled what I had and it wasn't matching up and I didn't have time to work with either ball.  Now that I've got both balls rolling how I want/need them to, I can see my average going back up to where it should be...that extra bit of handicap will be short-lived...

Good to read that you had some success now that you tweaked the surface. For some reason, my game and Storm/Roto's 1500 polished finish do not like one another very much. I have given up and just knocked the shine of the factory polished pieces prior to drilling and put my own idea of a finish on them that should work for my game. This way, I can replicate it better in the long run or tweak it if I guess wrong.

Are you finding that you can square the pattern up more with the Mars and still carry pretty well?

Definitely, squaring up with the Mars carries very well.  That's one thing I really like about it.  Started with the front eight in the third game the other night with the Mars playing that way after I began to lose the inside line with the Nomad.
