Axis Leverage?
« on: April 06, 2009, 06:45:56 AM »
Axis leverage (CG and weighthole on axis with pin 3-4" from PAP) used to be one of my favorite layouts a long time ago...back when the core diffs were less than .030.  It was a great way to get the ball to start up early yet still be strong and relatively smooth.  I got away from them because the cores and covers started getting so strong that that layout tended to "puke" and wasn't very versatile.

However, I've been thinking about trying it in a planet series ball since they have such a low diff and tend to get down the lane really well.

Would a Rico be worth a try?

Have a Neptune drilled like this. Smooth and predictable on med to dry.

So, if you do it.........which planet ball will you use? and then, what condition will you throw it on?

I'd love to see it on a Neptune or Venus!

It will probably be on a Mars or possibly a Neptune.  I'd use it when the volume of oil is very light and I need to play straighter through the fronts without the huge jump in the back at the end of the pattern.  I have wee bit of axis rotation so long pin planets can go sideways for me.

Thanks for the info. May have to try that on a planet ball.

Last ball I had that drilling on was a Raspberyy Ninja RPM. Ball rolled great, but it was seriously condition specific. If there was too much oil out there, it let you know in a hurry.

Lanes had to be dryish and dryer.

Do you think this kind of lay out would be good on the fresh? It seems to me that getting the ball to "lay off" until the lane settles down is a huge part of bowling on the fresh.

I agree, this was a favorite drilling of mine especially in urethane!

Chappy did you ever try the compu-balance lay outs? They were a variation of the axis leverage lay outs. The pin was 3-4" from PAP, but instead of a weight hole thru the CG (axis point), the hole was close to 9" from center of grip.

You could never do it with todays flare monsters, but urethane blue hammers back in the day were awesome with this type of lay out.

Yes I just changed a ball for the dramatically better by changing the weighthole from on the PAP to 9 inches from grip center....sweet where there was carrydown but early read!

Before that...not enough backend!

My first ball with this layout was a Tropical Storm.I had a Playmaker with this drill in it and it was good. Actually put this in a Black Widow Bite and it gave me my best look at nationals this year.

Yes, this could be a very good layout for fresh although if there is enough volume although I prefer to go with surface to have it bleed off some energy. But if the volume is thin/light, then this layout on a weaker piece could be great on fresh because it would help with controlling the backends.

I didn't know it was called compu-balance, but I used Mo Pinel's "Power" System (can't remember the correct name). It was basically 5 variations of leverage with the weighthole in various positions long your midline.  Power 3 was "traditional" leverage with the weighthole on the axis and 5 was 9" from center of the grip.  I used the Power 5 in a Nitro and  Purple Nitro and had some of the best ball reactions ever!  LOL!

BTW, that 9" weighthole is good now on lower flare layouts cause it gets the flare rings to separate on the back part of the lane.  Great for when the heads and mids go but there is still oil downlane.
