I've planned on getting a Hy-Wire since seeing one in action back in March. As of late, I'm hearing a lot of people say it goes longer than balls like the Sky Rocket, Hy-Road Pearl, etc. I was hoping to get a cleaner but strong ish cover and a higher flaring core. I understand what the specs suggests as far as the cores, but it makes me wonder if the cover is weaker than I want. Perhaps I should not worry as much since I plan on using it more around 2000. Just want to hear thoughts from other users.

I believe the Hy-wire appears to be going longer than the Sky Rocket because of the design of the ball.  The Sky Rocket is more of a skid/flip ball, whereas the Hy-wire is a mid-lane read with continuation kind of reaction.  The backend move of the Hy-wire will not be as pronounced as the SKy Rocket since it is starting to roll sooner.  Which ball you choose depends on what kind of ball motion you are seeking.

I have an Asylum drilled 4x4x2 (predecessor to the Hy-wire....same core similar cover).  I have used it at the 3000 grit out of box finish as well as 3000 grit plus factory polish.  Both cover treatments seemed to go long simply because the ball picks up in the midlane sooner than other types of designs.  I would not consider this design to have a true skid/flip type of motion at all.  I rarely use the ball as I find it to be unreliable regardless of surface prep.
