Roto Grip Wrecker issues
« on: March 05, 2013, 06:06:41 AM »
Purchased a Wrecker a couple of weeks ago.  I expected it to go through the head with a smoother arch for control on the back end.  We have more oil in our house that others in the area.
My speed is about 14.5 at the pins with about 325-350 revs with a lot of hand.  Had the ball drilled strong (like my other balls) with pin over ring finger.
I cannot get the ball through the heads.  As soon as it hits the lanes, it starts moving left.
The only way I can get it down the lane, is by sanding it to 4000 high speed, Factory finish, and then extender.  With this done, is rolls like my OOB Modern Marvel.

Any suggestions?

Hit it with 2000 to smooth it out might work. The wrecker is not smooth oob. It is pretty sideways. I think you Doug have gone with a 5-5.5 " pin down layout not pin over ring. But it still isnt a very smooth ball for most people.

Sorry, but you're confusing me.
You have a "lot of oil" but the only way you can get a Wrecker to go through the heads is to sand it to 4000 grit AND add a super fine  polish to it?
That is astonishing.
PLUS it now acts the same as a OOB Modern Marvel, a dull, low RG, much stronger coverstock ball???

While I am not doubting what you say (you are, after all, the one throwing these balls.),
I find it surprising, to say the least. Are you playing the same line? Did you use these balls on the same day?

These are 2 very different balls for very different amounts of oil and for different oil patterns.

Any further clarifications would be much desired.

That is why I am so confused.  I am throwing both on the same pattern at the same line.   The wrecker catches earlier than the Marvel and just keeps going.  It acts like it is on burned lanes when it is on the fresh.  Did you see Norm Duke this weekend?  His one shot started moving left as soon as it hit the lanes.  That is what my ball is doing.  It is definately not going long and smooth.  I used my OOB Defiant Edge and is acted like it should, Long and Snap on back.  I threw the Wrecker and it didn't make it through the heads.  Is it an anomole ball or did Roto Grip make a mistake in design?

My wrecker forces me deeper than any ball i own it is fairly clean through the heads when i get far enough left for it to get down the lane. Sounds like you are just trying to play too far right with it maybe?? Btw i have a defiant edge defiant soul, iq tour pearl, lucid most all of the global line up and i still an deeper with the wrecker than all of those. Just causea shot is fresh doesn't mean there is heavy volume either....

My normal shot with the Edge Starts at the 8 board and finishes about the 13-14 on a 5 man league.  Using the Wrecker without extender polish, I have to start at the 15 and move left.  With the extender polish I can start about the 13 and have to put it away after 1-2 games.  I bought the ball to be approximately the same amount of hood as the Edge with a smoother back end.  Doesn't look like that is going to happen.

Please keep in mind how beat up (high friction) those lanes are in the arena setting at Thunderbowl...

When the WSOB was there a few years ago you saw a lot of the staffers using weak, entry level pieces or polished performance balls to get the ball down the lane...

My wife thows a Shatter and absolutely loves is.  I have more speed than her, so I was really expecting the Wrecker to work for me like her shatter does for her.  The only thing different about the balls are the cover stock.

Mine is the same as well. Too strong for the burn. Weak for the fresh.  Think storm's
Mid-low hybrids have been a lot stronger than expected. So.... I am goin to try 500 (longer time/pressure) and then 4000 for 5 seconds.
