Roto Venus first impressions
« on: March 08, 2007, 10:36:07 AM »
I drilled the Venus today and threw about 12-13 games on 2 different patterns with it.

Drilling:
4" Pin 2.5oz TW
4 1/2" pin, over bridge, Xhole down 1" from my axis.

Started out on a fresh medium oil condition, playing inside around 15 to 5, the Venus was clean through the fronts, strong midlane read and strong smooth backend move. It was very rolly off the dry. I liked the way the ball revved up in the midlane while still being clean through it. While I liked the overall reaction of the ball, I felt the pattern was too long for the ball, if I got the ball into the oil it was flat 7 everytime, and if I got into the dry a little early it would dive through the nose. I was throwing it along side my Silver Streak Solid(Pin under bridge, 4000Grit), from the same line the SS read the lanes much better, smoother, stronger in the oil, stronger off the dry and much stronger through the deck.

I moved to a different pair where the lanes were broken down a little and the reaction got worse, the ball used all of it's energy resulting in 7 after 7, and moving deeper into the oil, the ball wasn't able to turn the corner. I started a new game, I moved in more slowed down and got my hand around it more, threw the first shot and went 3-7-9. So I went into the shop and I took it to 2000Grit and re-polished using Ebonites factory polish. Went back on the lanes proceeded to throw the next 16 in a row. It was a completely different animal, the ball still revved up in the mids but was much cleaner through them and still had plenty of energy to drive through the pin deck. Here, I was throwing it along side my Thunderstruck Pearl, they were very similar except the the Thunderstruck had no mid lane, it's all backend. I was able to get firmer with my speed with the Venus and not have it blow through the break like the Thunderstruck would and I was also able to slow down and increase my angle without having it push too long unlike the Thunderstruck.

If you don't want to read my rambling above, basically I like the ball so far, it's a good fit between the Silver Streak Solid and my Blue Retro.

And yeah, I do know it all.. I don't spend 30+ hours a week learning more about bowling for my heatlh... I do it so I know more than all of you.. which I do. (besides the random few that are staffers/work in the bowling business.. which that population is decreasing little by little)

Nice review.  I've been looking at one myself.  It will probably have to wait until summer tho.

I have noticed Storm/Roto particle pearls for me like being knocked down and reshined for some reason this works well on them. I have down this on the Shift and the Silver Steak SE and it has woke them both up, the shift would work well one set and then another set go dead straight until the change. In my case i have using Columbia 2000 polish after a 1000 abralon matte finish.

Yeah, off the press I usually lightly hit the polished balls with a grey pad or sand to 1000 and polish.  That way I don't have to use them a few games to "break" them in and wear down the box finish.  The box finish is usually a little too over/under for me.
