How strong is the Sonic X Pearl's coverstock?
« on: April 23, 2005, 05:15:32 PM »
Is this the same strong-ish coverstock that is used on the powerfull Silver Streak Pearl?

And does the Ultra Sonic use the same cover? And is the only thing different between these balls (the Sonic X Pearl and Ultra Sonic) that "power plant" that is in the Ultra Sonic?

My reason for asking is I think my original Sonic X Pearl is actually as strong as my Ultra Sonic... and that worries me.

Both are drilled similarly. Both have similar coverstock preps so that I could get a good comparison. I wanted to go directly to the Sonic X Pearl if the Ultra Sonic was going high... but that is a little hard to do, since my Sonic X Pearl is THIS STRONG.

Isn't there suppose to be more seperation bewteen these 2 balls? I'm seeing about only 2-3 boards (if that)... shouldn't there be about 5-8 boards difference? Or maybe there's something different about my Sonic X Pearl that makes it stronger than it's suppose to be?

From what I recall the coverstock on a Sonic X is slightly stronger than a Storm Curelyon coverstock.  The newer resin on the Sonic Boom, Super Sonic and Ultra Sonic is stronger yet, but not as strong as say an Accu-Tread coverstock.  I'm not sure where the SSP coverstock would fall in all this.

Ric- Sometime ago I bought a Sonic X Pearl and a Sonic Boom at the same time. Laid them both out the same. 5" pin to pap- 75 degrees. With this setup they were 5 boards apart on the same shot. Perfect one,two punch right! Well yes on the right condition. The right condition for these balls is really a light (not dry) oil shot. Both were too strong for dry. I had better luck on dryer conditions with the new blue ,red storm big hit pearl. Doesn't have as much backend as the sonic x.

Ric,

just a reminder. Many house conditions can make an apparently wide variety of balls look very similar in reaction. Unless you try them under several varieties of lane surface PLUS oil pattern, do not assume that the Sonic-X pearl will be the same as the Ultra Sonic, which has a slightly stronger cover and a slightly stronger core. You should easily see a difference between these two balls.

How you use that difference or if you even need that difference is debatable.

J-mac described the different coverstocks well, as far as I know.
And, yes, according the RG's ownwebsite the covers on the Sonic-X pearl and the Silver Streak Pearl have the same name. BUT REMEMBER also that the core difference is huge in numbers and design! Such differences show up in mnay manufacturers' line-ups: same coverstock on 2 different balls making large differences in overall ball reaction.

Thanks!

With further testing I'm now seeing the Ultra Sonic to be a little more angular.

The Ultra Sonic is not quiet a "flip" but it's close where as the Sonic X Pearl is all arc but it covers so many boards unexpectedly is my concern. My Sonic X Pearl just seems to keep going and going and the continuation is unreal!

I hate to harp on it, but I could almost swear that the Sonic X Pearl can "almost" cover the same amount of ground, or boards, as the Ultra Sonic but in a whole complete different way.

Ultra Sonic = angular, sharp
Sonic X Pearl = arc, big recovery and continuation

I can better see the difference now, but my Sonic X Pearl is pretty strong too.

I wish I could put up a video, but I'm not that smart.

Ric, depending on your game, I don't think you'd NEED both....but with surface prep, you can separate them more.........i.e.; polishing the original more
