Step Up from Wrecker
« on: July 28, 2013, 04:46:01 PM »
Which ball in the Storm/RG line would be a step up in overall strength from the Wrecker?  I would like something a little earlier/stronger.

Maybe the Disturbed or the Marvel-S?  Or are these balls several steps stronger?

Over the past several years. I have been throwing a range of equipment, but when I look back, all of my best scores/tournament have come when I was throwing Storm/RG equipment.  I am going to give it a shot this upcoming season.

Thanks,
Scott

Big question is what patterns are you facing?  Also, what do you have in your arsenal currently?  That can help us narrow the choices down and give you better suggestions.

All house patterns, couple different centers.  They put out a fairly decent volume.  At the end of last year, I used the Wrecker most of the time and it worked quite well.  However, a few times it seemed to push a little too far down the lane and I ran into carry issues.  I wanted to get something a little earlier/stronger for these instances.  I also plan on picking up something a step down from the Wrecker.

A Rumble or Deranged would probably be the easiest answer to arrive at...  a Disturbed would be a much bigger step up, and the Marvel-S higher than that.

If you only want a "little earlier and a little stronger". wouldn't it make sense to drill another Wrecker, with a shorter pin-PAP, and larger VAL angle and, maybe change the surface for less length, maybe 1500/2000 grit with a mild hand-polish? You'd have a ball whose characteristics you know, with an earlier, stronger roll to handle that little bit extra oil.

If you are only bowling in THS I would take a bigger step up. Maybe the Disturbed or a Soul. You will see a bigger difference. If you were on sport then is say a bit difference would be a Rumble or Deranged. I'd personally recommend the Soul. It's also a hybrid like the Wrecker, great continuation.

I would go Disturbed, it will start up sooner because its a solid, but it stores its energy rolls smooth and continues. I have mine drilled pin down with it shined up just a bit and I love it. The Soul I believe will be too strong if you want to step up from the Wrecker. You can also adjust the cover if its just a bit too strong put some polish on it or if it is not strong enough put a lower cover finish on it.

I'd have to go with both J_Mac and charlest on here.  You could go with something such as the Rumble if you want a solid cover with a similar core that will read earlier.  You could also look at the Deranged, Hy-Road or Hy-Road Pearl balls as an option too.  The Disturbed could possibly be more than you need, and the Marvel-S would really be overkill with the NRG cover.

Depending on how you have the Wrecker already drilled, you could simply go with a slightly different layout, have one pin above/pin below, and then just change the surface.

As for the step down from the Wrecker, you could potentially look at the Scream/Shout, Lights Out, or potentially the Super Natural if a hybrid urethane potentially fits your game.

Yeah...in process on purging and rebuilding.  Only holding onto the Wrecker...  Drilled with a Motion hole layout.

Hyroad is boards stronger than Hyroad Pearl.
Rumble is about as strong as the Disturbed (possibly earlier).
Wrecker is stronger (overall strength) than Hyroad Pearl (by far).
Deranged would be (IMO) your closets step up from a Wrecker.
Disturbed doesn't seem to shape as much downlane as the Wrecker.
Marvel-S and Defiant Soul are likely two balls up in strength (thus too strong).

I have all balls that were mentioned in this thread and can tell you the Deranged OR the Totally Defiant are the closets ball-ups from the Wrecker. The Totally Defiant arguably has a shape closer to the Wrecker, BUT as the condition dries-up the TD may want to puke sooner than the Deranged.

Cheers
