Saw Scroggins on the team shoot out sporting the Grand Illusion hat. I was wondering Roger if you guys approached him about signing with Roto? He seems to really be behind Roto Grip stuff.

Why sign some one like that, that looks down at his nose at league bowlers.
I will admit I am not the best bowler in the world. I enjoy the game, and just dislike people who look down their noses at others, whether league bowlers, or Pro's.

I can't believe people are still so worked up over that "threw it like a league bowler" comment.
-
Yep, seen that was able to hear that, and "wont" forget it either!!!

I don't think he meant to say "all you league bowlers suck and should quit bowling because you aren't me." He just meant "I'm a pro, this is what I do for a living, I should throw the ball better than just an average league bowler, but I didn't that last shot, I need to get my head back in it and throw it like I am capable of next time." Why is that such a big deal?? I forgot about it 10 seconds after he said it until every other person in the bowling community started pitching a hissy like third graders.
And for the record, most league bowlers aren't that good. Sorry to bust your bubble.
-
Well if every other person in the bowling community started pitching a hissy like third graders, maybe there is just some thing to it on what he said.
Stick up/with him, not me.

I think most of it is because league bowlers think they're a lot better than they really are. I, however, actually realize that I am not as talented as Scroggins despite averageing 225 or so on a cake house shot.
-
I don't think he was looking down his nose at anyone , he simply said that he threw the ball like a league bowler, no big deal. Most league bowlers could not repeat a shot and they are not on the same level as a pro no where near

We have an expression in English Cricket.... "Village" used to denote particularly sub-par play/players.
It gets used in most arenas where the game is played, and is taken in good fun, I think, because the people who are the butt of the joke, realise that they aren't as good as those making the comments.
Maybe that's the problem with Scroggins' comment, that those league bowlers who have taken offence don't appreciate the gulf in class...

Having been pretty good ( like a fairy tale, Once upon a time....), I can vouch for what Dan is trying to say and what I think Scroggins meant.
League bowling is fun, as a matter of fact, it is all I do anymore. That being said, there was a time I bowled at a MUCH higher level than now. I practiced at least 50 games a week, bowled in 4 leagues, and tournaments every weekend. I got to the point I could FEEL a strike at the release point, I could tell you what pin I would leave on a poorly thrown ball BEFORE it hit the pins because I already knew what mistake I had made in my release. The pros really are that good because, even at my best, I could do no better than hold my own against them, and that was on a really good day.
Yes, I had a small opportunity to turn pro, but I didn't have the time for what it would've taken for me to get to that next level, the one most pros must be on to achieve from week to week, the one Scroggins is competing on and being/trying to be successful on.
I was real good once, now I am just a good league bowler. I have been on both ends and understand where Scroggins remark comes from. He obviously hasn't forgotten where he comes from and obviously is aware of how much difference there is between repeating shots good enough to score in league play and shots good enough for the pro tour. It is a BIG difference.
He meant NO disrespect to you or me as league bowlers, he just knew that performing at a league bowler level is nowhere NEAR good enough to make shots out there, especially if you want to win. "Throwing it like a league bowler" was less an insult to us than a derision of himself and his own abilities. He could have thrown it better than he did and STILL thrown it like a league bowler. Lots of league bowlers wish they could throw it as good as he did.
P.S. Scroggins is the holder of the second highest LEAGUE average ever, a 256.8 average in the 1999-2000 season. He knows the difference between league bowling and pro tournament bowling. Do those who criticize his remark?

back to the original topic.....
yea he does seem to be pimping roto grip stuff alot lately and doing well with it.
i honestly believe if it wasnt for scroggins the cell wouldnt be as popular or wouldnt have caught on as fast as it did when he won the two tourneys with it.

Mike's success on tour along with some other great professionals that used it on TV like Danny Wiseman, Tommy Delutz, & Jack Jurek were a large help to the exposure.

I totally agree. Roto doesn't have to pay him and he is still helping sales. Maybe that's why they haven't signed him... they don't have to. I have to admit, I probably wouldn't have a Cell right now if I hadn't seen him throw it. I had never really considered Roto Grip before.

Same here and glad that I made the decision to pick one up!

The fact its at a lower price point than anything comparable, stronger than just about anything to date, and its selling incentives directed to proshops we're not part of that at all. It was all mike and the pba that sold boat loads of these things.
Roger knows how they sold so many of these things. Bowlers can still realize a good value for the money atleast. If they aren't caught up by all the marketing first.

Im sure the PBA performace did help sales of the CELL, but over here in the UK we dont get the PBA on TV and yet the ball still sold out at the distributor faster than any other Roto Ball, or any ball from just about any company for that matter!

Got to mark out for Scroggy. Being a lefty, I bought a Cell after seeing it on the show.
-
I guess the question should be does Scroggs want to be on staff?
-
Scroggs and Hank Boomershine went to college together according to a telecast I saw, so I thought for sure Scroggins would end up on staff. Maybe he prefers to be a free agent...
-
Or maybe it's about the mon-nay.
-
maybe the only Roto Grip ball that he likes, that fits his game is the CELL? If that is the case, why would he want to be on staff?
The CELL doesn't fare well on the short patterns from what I saw. Fabulous ball for anything other than VIper and Cheetah from my experience.
