To Roger and the Roto-Grip guys

To Roger and the Roto guys, I bowl in a house that lays down around 40 to 41 feet of medium light oil. I predominately use a Sonic Boom (1000 Abralon then polished with Ebonite factory finish. The first game is a bit tough because of the polished finish.

By the second game the track is drying out and the Boom just kills the pocket.

The third game I can usually move in two to three boards and still score well or at least survive.

I have many different Roto-Grip balls to choose from but the geometry of the Sonic Boom has been a perfect fit for me. What I don’t want is some monster ball that I need to put a leash on to control. I am a down and in bowler looking for a ball that can handle the first game on 40 to 41 feet of fresh medium light oil and third game where a slight amount of carry down may be present.

Balls like the Sonic X are too weak and balls like the Silver Streak are a bit strong. I guess what I am looking for is a ball that reacts like the Sonic Boom with a tad more bite. I have read the reviews of the Venus and checked the core geometry. The Venus seems to match up well to the Sonic Boom. I have no first hand experience in seeing the Venus in action and though you guys could point me in the right direction.

The Venus is indeed something with more midlane. The small amount of particle helps with any kind of carrydown. The ball is really your best choice.

The Venus is the biggest ball they have out now in the Planet series.  The Saturn has a strong cover, but may hook too early for what you are seeing.  I would search ebay for a Super Sonic as it has the same type core as the Sonic Boom, but also that offset wedge.  The ball has way more in the midlane and its very continuous on the backend.  It would be great for a fresh shot.  You may even end up putting down the Sonic Boom until the last game if you get one.  Here's my review of it:

Guys, thanks for the replies. DP3 I have a Super Sonic at 1000 Abralon and hadn’t been using it much this year but after reading your review I think my problem may be the surface prep. At 1000 the ball is early (to much midlane) I probably need to apply a light polish or extender over the 1000 grit finish. I will get on it and test results next Wednesday.

The Dude and Steve Richter, thanks for validating the potential of the Venus. That ball sounds way too sweet to let fall out of production without a test drive. Birthday is the end of January, so will make my request to momma for a Venus.

Bass, the Saturn also sounds like a sweet ball. With your ball speed and rev rate a 2” Pin (Low RG Strong Layout) sounds like the ticket. For me with a 14 mph ball speed and significantly lower rev rate I think the Saturn maybe a tad strong and a bit early.
