Balls to sit over and under the Battle
« on: January 29, 2007, 12:50:46 AM »
Hey guys, I'm looking for a couple balls to sit over and under my Battle.  I just ordered an SD-73 (should be arriving in a day or two) and based on what I've read, this ball could be on par or even over the Battle.  In your opinion, which way does it go (over or under the Battle?)?  Originally, I was thinking of getting the Special Agent for over and the SD-73 for under.  I may have to re-think this based on your thoughts.  The new Odyssey is on my radar as well.  Let me know what you guys think.  Thanks!

SD-73 or Epic Odyssey might, in general, "hook" more than the Battle on most heavy conditions featuring dry boards down or across the lane.  The solid reactive covers, coupled with the powerful cores on both, make for a dynamic combination that will react strongly.  However, I think that on a true flood, the Battle, assuming you have a strong drilling on it, would still be your best bet, given the particle cover.  Since you already ordered the SD-73, put that one over the Battle, for most shots.

Below the Battle, consider the coming Mystic.  Looking at your profile, you have a lot of balls that are reactive that would also fit under the Battle.  The pearl-particle cover will give you a different look on the lane, and make your arsenal more useful.  Proper surface prep, and drilling, of course, are needed.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Rev!  I've only had one pearl particle before (Xception 5.0) and had mixed results with it.  I ended up drilling it negative to give me a look on drier conditions but I'd consider getting another one again at this point in time.  My game has evolved since I first started throwing the 5.0 and that could have been my it didn't work out.  Do you know if the Odyssey will be on par with the SD-73 hook wise?  I'm just trying to gauge if they'd overlap too much for me.

RotoDave,

I just picked up a used Saga a couple weeks ago.  So far I like what I see.  I have the SD-73 on its' way.  Is the Odyssey too strong to sit under the Battle?

Having thrown the Odyssey, Battle, Sd-73
and Saga... I would say in my opinion,
The Odyssey is stronger on the backend
but starts up in the same place as the
Battle..  The SD-73 is like a Horizon
Solid on 'roids... starts early and
smooth... I would say that an Odyssey
with the right layout and surface
would still be above a Battle with
all else being the same..

tberk35,

So in your opinion, the SD-73 and the Odyssey sit above or could sit above the Battle with the right layouts?  Hmm...maybe the SD-73 and Battle are enough for me then if the Odyssey could overlap them.  Have you tried the Mystic yet?  If so, any thoughts on that ball?

Kgee15,

It depends what kind of ball motion that
you are looking for.. There is no doubt
that the Battle can handle the oil...
the Sd-73 is smooth arc off the spot
and the Odyssey will have a harder move
off the spot.. There was no Mystics to
try but I wish there was... I love pearl
particles... I sure it will be another
winner just like the other Horizons..

kgee15:

I have to echo the comments here by tberk and revTrex.  For the flooded patterns, you have to go the route of the Battle.  On more THS or even modified patterns you might actually "see" more hook down lane out of the SD and the Odyssey.

We recently started a PBA Experience league (tberk is in) and the Battle far outperfomed the SD on the heavier patterns (SD had to be super soft with the speed and usually went sideways out of the pattern leaving designer splits).

The SD in general we're seeing around here is smooth and strong for tweeners and crankers while it's creating backend for the stroker styles.  Layouts with good success (here) are: Crankers/Tweeners - longer pin distances and 75*-90* layouts.  Strokers - 4-1/2" - 5-1/2" pin to PAP layouts with CG kicked out, balance holes on axis.

Thanks for the replies, tberk and Steve!

It sounds like the SD-73 will be a good compliment to the Battle depending on the heaviness of the oil and presence of dry boards.  I love my Battle and I'm sure the SD-73 will make me take notice as well.  I may take a look at the Mystic when that is released.

As for a drilling suggestion, I consider myself a low-end tweener who tracks relatively low and throws in the 14mph range.  The ball I'm getting is a 2.5-3" pin and 3.1 oz TW.  Should I drill it based on the stroker suggested pattern (4-1/2" - 5-1/2" pin to PAP layouts with CG kicked out, balance holes on axis)?
