Shooting 300 with zero consistency?
« on: April 14, 2008, 02:02:43 AM »
What is up with all the bowlers who brag about shooting 300 and say the ball is great, because they missed their mark by 5 boards and the ball held/recovered? Is this something to brag about? I've always been a proponent of throwing a good ball, but has the game changed to the point where it's all about the equipment, and no longer the bowler? Your thoughts...?

I know what you mean.  So much of it depends on the condition and how lucky you are really.  On an easy shot, you can shoot a 300 just by getting lucky and kicking out a couple 10 pins and having no 7 pins fall on swisher shots.  When the shot gets a little tougher, though, it comes down more to shot making.  My second 300 was on a night when I had very little room to miss, and had to really execute well.  I never missed my target by more than a board or two the whole game, and I'd say 10 out of the 12 pitches were flush/high flush shots, and I had maybe two in the middle of the game that hit a little light but still in good swisher pocket.  I was really proud of that game since it wasn't just about having easy lanes and creating a ton of area.  I had to work hard and throw quality shots every single time for that 300!  However, on a house shot, you just don't see that much.  Most people I've seen shoot 300 in a regular league just have a night where their ball reaction is above average and they kick out a few extra corner pins off errant shots.  I've had nights where I shot 279 or something even though I was all over the lanes and just throwing it like crap, but I had an easy line.  Nothing to brag about on those games -- I just got lucky and pins fell.

yes and no.  i have seen two guys throw 300's and have minimum of 2 brooklyns in each game. but they didn't brag really, they both just said "i got a lucky 300 this time".  but does it matter if they miss and get a 300.  its no different when you, or I, or a pro misses and it carries, or you get a super sloppy strike.  you take them as you can.  i would be more proud of myself to have a all solid pocket 300 than a messy one, but i will take either/or anytime.  it doesn't matter what the score is when somone gets lucky, it just happens.

I actually don't think it is equipment, but the typical house oil pattern.  Guys are throwing balls 8-10 years old and getting 300s because the pattern corrects poor shots.  Even with that kind of help, I still haven't thrown a 300 this year.  Ringing ten 258s I got, 12 flush first balls I got, 300 I ain't got... so I give props to whomever gets a 300.  It still isn't easy.

I think for the first 300 it doesn't matter.. My first one had a few lucky falls in there tripping out a 4 pin occassionally but i never went brooklyn or anything like that...Now you talkin about nervous...WOOAHH nothing else like it..lol

But we don't see people throw 300's around here but maybe once every 4 months or so...so we don't really get that much lucky stuff at our house i don't think but im not out there everyday so people could be throwing lucky ones but i doubt it..

I don't see many terrible 300 games.

I also know I've thrown a ton of 12 flush in the pocket games and have yet to have one.  Including two days in a row flusing all 10 balls I threw and getting a 7-10 split in the 4th and 10th that looked as good as anything thrown before.

Bstone?  can you beat Robert Mushtare?  His year he shot 900s in prebowl he also had an 85x in league(no prebowl and I believe another 5 800s no prebowl.  He averaged in the 240s that year...

I was talking about luckylefty not Mushtare, I don't really care about the kid I've seen him bowl and the PBA is not in his future.

I've had more unlucky 279 games than lucky 300's (1).  Look at it in that context and you will accept others success without jealousy.

Well, since I have yet to throw A 300 I'll take it anyway I can get it. I've been close a few times, got nervous the last time for and ended up with a 277.
When you go to bowl you have to take conditions as you find them. Down here in our house it's mostly reversed block or really light. Lanes have been known to change every shot. Also, they do not know what you mean by THS, I have not seen that on a Thursday or Friday night in over two years.

Thankfully, my two 300's were both solid pocket versions. I did have a scout trip the 7 on my first one, but it was still a solid 1-2 pocket.
