SD-73 Classic Classic
« on: November 27, 2011, 03:47:13 AM »

I've thrown a ton of different equipment throughout my bowling days and on a house shot, the old SD-73 tops em all. I was wondering if theres ever been any slight thought of making another limited run of these bad boys to replace the ones that bowlers are using that are on their last legs? I know a lot of guys around here that would buy em up, and I'd pre-order a case myself :)

I don't think they can be remade as the core is illegal by today's USBC rules. I believe that is why they were remade the first time to get some back out there before the new rules took effect. This is why ebonite re released the Game Breaker as it is now illegal.

yeah I'd like to know the details of the re-release rules myself. I know that the gamebreaker violates the new low rg regs while the sd referred to the high diff limitations. What would be nice to see ultimately would be a limited run made. I was always under the impression that since the ball is on the usbc approved list, and was "grandfathered" in as legal because it was made before the diff rule, that as long as it was the exact same ball, same cover, same core, same name, that they could make it happen.  That ball is a beast and it would have a great chance of selling good against the stuff currently being made.

It's more than likely not going to happen. Even though older, already approved balls were grandfathered in at the time, the USBC ruled that they can only be made up to a certain point in time and that has already passed. Visionary was given that deadline for their Centaur AMB line of balls. When that time was reached, they were no longer permitted to make them. That has been probably 2 years ago already. So I seriously doubt if RG will get another deadline extension, even if they had enough requests like yours. If I recall correctly, even when the SD-73 was re-iisued, they had a hard time selling out even that limited run..

ahhhh, got ya. Thanks for the insight on that whole deal. Maybe you may know this one as well, what is the reason putting up so many silly restrictions on the dynamics of a bowling ball? There are balls for heavy oil and light oil made every day, what the heck makes the difference if the darn thing has the potential for 9" of flare or 5" due to diff? Every oil condition requires its own ideal equipment selection respectively. If a ball has a rg of 2.44, how is that to such an advantage to where some genius has to slap a restriction down? same with a diff of .073? Why rule out a ball that flares a ton when at the end of the day, its the bowlers individual style, skill, and lane condition thats going to determine where the advantages lie? Is there a link that explains all this sillyness? Pretty soon, for some reason there will probably be a rule slapped down for the amount of asymmetry allowed on new technology. Why?

My point of view:

Since they really can't put true restrictions on many aspects of bowling (like limiting side board rebounding and oiling and gutter depths. If they did then owners via the BPAA would clamp down on the USBC which they now virtually own.), they are trying to show that they are actually doing something by putting limits on bowling ball design and specifications. This way they look like they are actually doing something.

The current "new" restrictions, like reducing RG Differentials from .080" to .060"  and increasing the minimum RG from 2.44" to 2.46" mean virtually nothing except to make people like you unhappy, because you can't buy new balls that are now restricted. Balls are so strong today these restrictions are worthless.

FYI I guarantee you can find balls MUCH stronger than the SD-73 because surface textures, which science is far advanced over the the state of this same science when the SD-73 came out. If you can't, your driller is the one letting you down, not Storm and not the USBC.

Yeah that makes a lot of sense. I'm not one of those guys that gets all up tight over lifes meaningless things, all my wonders come with humble spirits. I'm not one of those 'know it all' type people and I aint afraid to ask for wisdom when I wonder about stuff that interests me. Too much negativity in the world so I make it a point to project in a positive light. At the end of all days, I could give two rats balls less about a ball being made whether its got a number beside it that says .069 or 2.44, those things arent gonna come up the next time I enjoy family time. I'm a wonderer and things are interesting to learn in life. Thanks for the wisdom. Would be nice to find a reference that stated facts on all the restrictions and reasonings, an interesting read I figure.
