Silver Streak Pearl question.
« on: March 30, 2005, 01:03:47 AM »
In a thread on the PBA site someone was bragging about shooting 846 (300-246-300) and stated that they only missed the hole once all night.  Well, last night I too only missed the hole once....but I shot 570.  I was using the SSPearl (pin right of and slightly above ring, CG swung slightly towards PAP) and couldn't carry crap in my hat.  My driller had one of these once and characterized it as "rolling like a potato and hitting like a pound of sausage."  I left at least 10 10 pins, a 7 pin on a high flush hit, 2 other 7 pins, a 9 pin, etc, etc, etc.  My strike percentage was under 50%.

What I want to know, is this normal with this ball?  Have any of you had similar experiences with it?  I love the look of the ball on the lane; not snappy (as I thought it might be), but very rolly.  On occasion it would shred the rack when not flush, but flush hits didn't seem to carry worth beans (no harm intended Beans, if you read this).  Granted, it was the first time I had dragged this guy out since re-drilling, but I was, to say the least, immensely disappointed.

Rags.......I would just put it in the bin of "one of those nights" kind of things..

I've been tearing it up the last few weeks w/ one of my Hercules,..and last week just wasn't it....just like you ...NUTHIN'! ...switched to my other Hercules w/ a slightly different line and BOOM!

So, sometimes it's just not the right match...even if you blew the rack away a couple of times....still,...just probably wasn't the match last night....

How new it the ball Rags?  Mine was very flaky with the original surface.  It is drilled pretty flippy, so it can be a 10 pin magnet if your entry angle isn't right.  After getting some games on it, it became a bit more even and the carry improved a lot.  I shot one honor score and tied my high series twice with this ball.  I've been toying with getting another while you can still find them before they disappear.

How is it drilled now, and what is the surface?  What drilling did you change it from?

Strider, layout is in the original post.  It's on at least a third drill (I got it from Lucky Lefty [I think]).  It was in somewhat rough shape but when we re-drilled it the first time my driller ran it thru the Haus to the point that some of the logo is worn off.  Now it's pretty shiny, at least 1500 probably closer to 2000.  I forget how LL had it layed out but I started with pin a tad left of middle finger (so negative) CG just right of mid palm - it was a tur..., so I changed to what it is now.  Oddly enough it still didn't need a wt. hole - must have had very low top wt.

Do you think I should scuff it a tad?

I was very dissapointed with the way it hit, since it looked so nice on the lane.   The lane guy started last week with the "Please come back next year" shot - I have 10 boards (4 - 14) but cant seem to carry from any of them, at any angle with this ball, at least consistently.  Given my drillers comments I'm worried that the ball just may not be a good match for me, though I love my SSParticle and solid.

Rags, I'd try scuffing it like Strider says...I doubt very highly you wouldn't like this ball if you liked the particle and solid.....

my ssp is still punishing pins.  after 300 or so games, it's a lot more even and the flippiness has calmed down.  but now it rolls really nicely into the pocket.  i'm suspecting the ball not matching up to the lane?  as carrydown will somewhat affect the pearl balls.  on clean backends, i can carry the house with my ssp.

I'd try a slight scuff with a white (1000 grit) Scotch Brite pad if you can find one.  Maybe it's not quite reading the lane soon enough.  With that ball, a little late into the pocket can ring corners all day.  Sorry, blurred right over your new drilling.
