Silver Streak SE vs. Apocalypse
« on: November 28, 2005, 10:13:04 AM »
Has anyone thrown both the Apocalypse and the new Silver Streak SE? I noticed that they both have the Rev-elation cover stock but have different cores. Having thrown a friend’s Apocalypse, I felt it would be a good choice to open the lanes up after they break down on a typical house shot. Being that the Apocalypse is now discontinued I was wondering if the Silver Streak SE might offer a similar reaction. I am looking for a compliment to my Epic, which I am very happy with.

How do you open up the lanes after they have already been broken down? Anyway, I think the Apocalypse is a good ball to move to for that 2nd/3rd game of league to chase the oil inside if thats what you mean. OOB box condition was too over/under for me to play on the fresh. I know the core was assymetrical on the Apocalypse and the SSE is symmetrical so Im assuming you will see two different reactions. All in all the Apocalypse was/is flippy whereas the SSE will probably have fierce backend but a little more controlled. Hope this helps.

Moving inside to chase the oil line is exactly what I mean. I apologize for my misuse of bowling jargon and appreciate your input nonetheless. I am looking for a ball that gets down the lane further when my Epic starts hooking early.

Are you certain that these two balls have the same coverstock on them?  If you recall Roto-Grip just recently changed coverstock manufacturers.

Upon further investigation on Roto Grip’s website the Silver Streak SE has a “Sure Grip Revelation” cover stock & the Apocalypse has a “Rev-elation” coverstock.  So I must confess I am not 100% sure they coverstocks are identical. Both are listed as a pearl/solid reactive combination however. I am still curious how the Apocalypse matches up against the Silver Streak SE, as I liked the reaction I was getting with the Apocalypse and may not be able to get my hands on one due to its being discontinued.

Having thrown all of these balls, I would say that the Apocalypse and the SSSE hook within two to three boards of one other. However, the SSSE is approximately 4-5' later down the lane and much more angular. If you are already playing near the track area with your Epic and are looking for something to go to when the heads start to dry out, the SSSE would be a good choice. If you are playing further inside the oil line with your Epic, then I would recommend getting an Apocalypse (if you can find one). If you throw 15# there is one on Ebay right now. If you are unable to find an Apocalypse, I would then either purchase an RS-1 and drill it similar to your Epic (my RS-1 is anywhere between 4-8 boards weaker than my similarly drilled Epic), or drill another Epic with a weaker pin position with some polish.

Revelation refers to the COMBO of solid and pearl...I do not know if the Apoc and SSSE have the SAME cover.

That being said,....I DO KNOW FOR SURE, that the SSSE is a combo of the original SSS and SSP covers....Sure Grip solid and pearl combo!

I would say, overall the Apoc was a stronger ball...stronger core bigger backend.

The SSSE should be similar, but a little sooner and smoother overall...

I'll email Roger to clarify!

The Sure Grip Revelation does refer to a combination of the silver streak solid and pearl.  I understand the Marketing names we use can be confusing but you can always email me at rogern@rotogrip.com to confirm.  I'm working to have a chart made clarifying our covers over the year.  This will be added to the website in 2006 under our reaction corner.

Overall with both having similar pearl/solid combinations, RG and Differential are close, except one is asymmetrical and the other is symmetrical.  This wouldn't be a bad replacement for an Apocalypse.

No two balls are alike, but they can be extremely similar.

Thanks,

I have apoc, 2 epics different layouts one for late revs one with strong mb , rsp and ssse. For what you are looking for ssse is perfect step down from epic even my late revs ball is strong, i like ssse alot and think for the money it is one the best balls made. Also consider a polished RSP but the out of the box the epic and rsp for me were close in reaction. Rotogrip midline and down series balls are the best deals overall in bowling balls, these balls actually do what they say they will not like some companies promise and do not deliver.
