Skid Flip

I am planning on getting a new ball for broken down wood lanes where I need to move way left to stay in the oil and out of the burnt track.  I'm looking for alot of length and strong flip.  I'll drill this ball pin 6 inches from pap with cg stacked for angularity.  Here are my thoughts on ball choices.

Illusion-  How strong is this cover, will it be to early
Neptune-  Will it turn the corner hard enough or squirt

Between the Illusion and the Neptune, I would go with the Illusion.  I think the Illusion has enough "motor" to be able to cover a large amount of boards.  I have the Saturn, and the Neptune has the same core, only it is inverted (plus different coverstocks).  The Saturn doesn't do well when I try and play deep inside and cover a lot of boards.  It just doesn't have enough "motor" to recover.  Hope this helps.

Yes That helps, I just wish the RG website had the reaction chart completely filled out.  I emailed them and they responded that they would get this updatad soon a week ago or so.  This would make it easier to compare balls length/backend.  BTM magazine has good comparisons, but the illusion has not been reviewed yet.

I will agree with directdrill.  The Illusion is one great bowling ball.  The Neptune being low in the diff category will probably not match up to what you are wanting, especially with a pin that far from your PAP.  The Illusion I have is 5 1/2 x 4 and it works really well from inside angles.  It will kind of remind you of a T-road pearl but not as jerky in the back.

I'd have to agree with the others...the Illusion is the better choice, especially at that pin distance.  It's very strong downlane.  The Neptune will require a stronger drill and also for you to have to bump the track a little more.

We are getting the website updated, it just takes a little time to get the numbers put together.  As for  your question, The Illusion is a great ball and has a huge backend.  If you are looking for something that is more Skid flip may I suggest the Mystic.  Thats what I use when I move left and try to throw something down with a big snap at the back.  The move from it is violent where the Illusion is a more controlled move.  Either ball would probably fit your needs, its just a matter of how hard you want it to snap.

Thats interesting, I figured a pearl particle would read too early and not store as much energy for turnung the corner.  I have a mystic now but it's not drilled to flip.  The pin is one inch from my axis.  I love it for a down and in shot on a synthetic house shot.  It's just reads the midlane too much on our wood lanes after a few frames.

Your reaction is probably more due to the 1" pin.

Having seen Mark's Mystic on many a Summer's evening, I'd say this was the ball you want ESPECIALLY is you have already decided on a 6" pin to PAP. (How on earth you could decide that BEFORE even knowing what ball you will drill is well beyond my ken. I do no think that decision is a wise one.)

Mark, Yes you are right, I dont have much axis tilt and I havent figured out how to change this very well yet.  I'm sure this contributes to my length issues.  As far as rotation, I am able to change this somewhat.

Charlest, I decided on this drill pattern to create a specific reaction shape (length and flip).  I understand this pin position can and may have to be tweaked to get the desired reaction.  If I go with another neptune the pin may have to be more like 4 1/2 to 5 inches from my axis in order to flip.

I appreciate all the input.

mark, do you like your mystic more than the venus?  i have found that the venus has to have pretty clean backends and then it is great (shot my 800 with it).  it does backoff a little however when the heads are going and the backend gets choppy.  not bad enough for the neptune yet and the venus won't finish.  from what everyone is describing here, the mystic might be the ticket.

Sorry to hijack here, but bowl400, you bring up a great point on the Venus.  I took the surface down to 2000 Abralon and tried to use it in my second shift league on Monday night.  We follow a mixed league, so there is plenty of carrydown.  I couldn't get the Venus to wrinkle down lane.  Had my best look with my Track Machine (4-1/2" x 4-1/2", 2000 Abralon) and my Saturn (5-7/8" pin-PAP, CG on grip centerline, OOB).  Sounds like the Mystic might be a good option.

thanks mark, sounds good.  can get a used mystic, so it won't hurt a lot to give it a try.  i also have a saga.  it was great initially, but for some reason, it stopped working.  may give it another shot based on your experience.
