Title: Sonic Boom? Did I make a mistake?

I just picked up a Sonic Boom for $38 shipped NIB.  I read the reviews and from what I read it seems like it would be a pretty good ball, that doesn't hook right out of your hand.

Last night I had my first league outting and my Black Widow and Big Shot were hooking at the arrows and no matter how deep I got, I had trouble getting the ball down the lane.  

I then used my buddies old Speed Zone for the last game and started with the front 7 only to have a light hit 10 pin in the 8th.  Would the Sonic Boom get down the lane just as easily, or did I waste my money on another hooking monster?

It's not a hook monster... When drilled with the appropriate layout it makes a fantastic ball for lighter shots.  Just be warned, if you drill it strong you might end up with a very condition specific piece.

My Sonic X Pearl with a label leverage layout isn't very useful to me on dry lanes.

The Sonic Boom is most defintiely NOT a hook monster. In fact, I would worry that it is more like 2 or 3 steps down from a BW or BS. It requires LOTS Of dry. Unless that Speed Zone is truly oil-soaked or highly polished, The BS is at least 2 steps down from that one.

IMO, the person who made the mistake was the one who sold you the ball for just 38 shipped! LOL  Man you've got a great ball on your hands.  I've never owned the boom, only the sonic solid and the sonic pearl.  Both were great balls, I did know someone who owned a boom and it was about 3 boards stronger than my sonic solid. Still not too jumpy and gave a nice a hard finish. Great find!

I have a NIB in my garage and one drilled with only a few games.  This has to be one of my favorite RG balls.  From what I recall with my experience the Sonic Boom went extremely long with a hard finish.  I contributed the hard finish to the amount of energy the ball stored.  With my slower speed and higher rev rate this ball matched up well on most house conditions that didn't have too much OB.  Not a dry lane ball for me, but a lot of that depends on your style and how it was drilled.

Glides through the front+ with no effort.  Strong finish.  Pin above the bridge and cg right.

$38 is a good deal. The Sonic Boom is a pretty good ball for drier conditions. It has good length and is strong but contrallable on the back end. I used mine some in my summer PBA league when the lanes broke down.

If the lanes are a little spotty or dry up front with a lot of carrydown it may not work the best, but a lot of stuff doesn't work on those kinds of conditions.

I'm with everyone else.  The boom is my go-to ball on second shift leagues.  Gets through the heads and finishes strong.  I've got mine drilled pin above bridge, cg in palm.

The only downside for me is when the lanes start getting truly dry.  I don't usually have enough ball speed to keep it from getting squirty.

Thanks for the responses everyone.  I just got the ball in the "mail" today  I have ever seen one of these in person, it's a sharp looking ball, only problem is I'm color blind, and it has a lot of green and red in it according to my mother hahaha.

I was thinking of also picking up a Pearl Beast by Columbia, but now seeing how pearlized this thing is, I don't think I'll need to.  

Just as a reference would a label leverage type drilling be a good idea for this ball?  I don't want a super strong drilling on it.  I'm afraid to drill it for length, and it's already supposed to go long.  

I also just picked up a MoRich Awesome Finish, how much weaker am I looking at the Sonic Boom being than this ball?  If anyone knows?

I found the boom to be long and quite strong.

Did not like fresh backends or wood.  Very jumpy!  Lots of 6 - 8s on fresh.

And then when I went deep I preferred lower rg balls.

I like the Sonic X pearl AND Solid!

PS my boom liked sloppy synthetics but not floods!  A niche ball for me!

the Sonic Boom is a light oil ball, MUCH, MUCH, MUCH lighter than a Speed ZOne which was in the range of a Danger Zone.

For me has a much backend on today's oils as just about any ball I have if it can find any friction on back.  

My Sonic X solid...similar!  Almost with the big boys in the back...but not a lot of midlane when put up against a bigger core.
