Sonic X Solid vs. Sonic X
« on: August 04, 2003, 04:25:04 PM »
With the exception of what's on BBR and one being solid, what are the major differences between these two balls?

BBR states that the Solid X is for light oil, while the original Sonic X can handle a meidum to light variety.

Would the Solid X be weaker because of the 1500 grit finish?

I'm considering purchasing either one of these (or both) and wanted to know if they'll overlap each other.

Thanks

PK..
Yes, they're going to overlap. They are both 1500 and the only difference in the ball is the coverstock prep...the original is a pearl, the solid is a polished solid.  Sorry about the obvious, but that is about it

According to Roger, the solid will be a smoother ball overall than the pearl. The pearl will have a touch more length and be a bit snappier on the back because of the pearl.

Both balls are for lighter oil conditions,...not dry, but lighter. You see different ratings all over the place, but they are both for lighter conditions.

I'm getting the Solid today....I chose the solid because of it's versatility. Roger also said that the solid will be able to handle a little more oil especially if hit with a scotch brite.  That is where the solid got my attention.  I figured I'll be able to use the solid on more conditions than the pearl.  With the right drilling, the solid can be used not only as a light oil ball, but a control ball on fresh house shots.......

Thanks for the info.....

It looks like I will start with the pearl Sonic X first since I'd like a little more length for the lighter side.  I will most likely get the Solid anyway because you can't beat the price they're going for.

Very true....price to performance ratio is great!

You could actually get 2 totally different looks out of these balls with cover prep and drill differences though......you could leave the original in box condition drilled to go long and get the solid, hit it with a scotch brite and drill it with a rolling drill.....just a thought

Yeah......what do you suggest for that "rolling" drill, something close to pin axis?  I am not too familiar with those types of drills and usually go for more backend movement.

I'm joining a scratch match play league with a modified team based handicap this fall.  Start time is 9:00pm......I've practice on this shot before and I think either of the Sonic X's will do great.  Even though it's a second shift, I'd guess the backends are pretty clean from stripping.

all depends on how broken down they get from the first shift....

Rolling drill......like a 2x2 OR, maybe a 2x5 (cg in the palm) or a cg axis, cg on PAP, with a 3 or 4 inch pin.....

I'm very excited personally.

I have terrible luck getting pearl reactives to turn the corner for me, so the solid may be just what the doctor ordered for drier lanes.....now if I could just FIND some drier lanes I'd be in business.

I think I've found a deal where I can get the original Sonic X, so hopefully everything comes through.

As for me, I won't have any trouble turning over this pearl.......and now I'm excited to get it and drill it.

As a high rev player I love my Sonic X Solid for the torch condition.  The ball flips over and hits like a ton of bricks. This ball would be great for any WTC pattern and with out a doubt could be used in a sport league.

Having had the fortune of a Sonic X pearl in my bag, it has come in quite handy numerous times. However, since it was drilled rather strong (a stacked leverage), I am now looking into a solid with a label drill.
Despite a "low flaring" coverstock, the ball will cover boards, and hits well, most likely due to the fantastic weight block.
