Tell me about the Quest
« on: May 27, 2008, 06:38:34 AM »
Picking up a new Quest this weekend. How does it compare to the Odyssey and Cell? I've picked up 4 Roto balls in the past few months and I'm impressed with all of them, the Quest will be the last for awhile (fingers crossed). My impressions so far: Odyssey - one of the strongest balls I've thrown and definitely the strongest reactive. Saga - great ball, very underrated, need to throw it a bit more for a better opinion, just got it two weeks ago. Mystic - had this ball drilled Rico, smooth as silk and hits like a tank, as long as there's oil in the mids. Cell - Can't say anything that hasn't already been said, best ball I've ever had. Thanks for any info. on the Quest, trying to decide how to drill, got an idea but not sure.

It would be the one Roto ball i did not like out of the last 4 years, personally it was ball that never hooked even though it was rated through the roof for oil.

If it was me get another Cell go stronger pin and be done with it, the Cell drilled strong can handle alot of oil.Just got a new one went stronger pin and the hook is just crazy ball is flaring 5 1/2-6 inch area when it turns over it looks like Widow on steriods.

I have 3 Odyssey's so maybe that would be another choice with a lower grit if you can still find one around, another good choice would be an Attitude Shift at a lower grit.

I've drilled everything from Roto for the past 3 years and this is one of my hard ones to find a condition for.  I bought the Quest because it replaced my Battle which did not match up for me at all plus I love the Original Epic and the Quest has the same weightblock.  I drilled mine pin under at 4 3/4" and the MB at 45 degrees.  This does make it roll heavy off the foul line and you will not get the backend reaction of a Mystic or the Cell.  But, being 2% particle, it will handle more flat oil and longer oil patterns then the Cell, in my opinion. I have 2 Cells, one 4 x 4 and the other 5 x 3 and on heavy patterns, even slowing the ball speed down on my first Cell at 1000 grit, the Quest will read the pattern better and have a more readable look.  I'd say the Quest is condition specific, like all dull particle balls are, but if you get that right condition, it hits and carries nicely.  Got that good old Epic roll to it.

Good luck,

Roto4ever

Thanks guys. I'm thinking that this ball is real strong and rolly, so I don't want to drill it too strong or put too much surface on it. I've had a lot of success in the past with low-load particle solids and I think the Quest will work great on the longer, flatter patterns as Roto4ever describes. I think I'll have it drilled 4 X 6, pin below fingers and keep it OOB.

To add to the previous comments, polishing the Quest is a great idea if you want to get a decent skid-snap look.. its remarkable how much this snaps for a particle ball :|

Anyone put a pin-in-palm layout on the Quest?  I have a used Quest that I want to layout like this.  I would use it to control the backends in my PBA Experience league.  Any thoughts?

For my style the drill and cover prep make this ball useless on a THS.  This ball eats oil for breakfast and rolls out without any considerable amount of oil to get down the lane.  The more oil you bowl on the rougher the coverstock gets.(similar to Visionary's stuff)

I will leave it as is for now in case I bowl on a condition requiring this type of ball.

It's quite early, rolls strong and smooth, and will tell you quickly if it's ready to explode in the heads.  Just don't drill it to death if you have a mediocre amount of hand unless you like watching the lane surface catching fire.

Despite that it's a pretty solid ball.

I had a quest and didn't particularly care for the reaction.. drilled strong.. 4.5" pin and a 4.5" mb, pin next to fingers...  with a duller surface (like 500 grit abralon) it would either roll early and not hit on mediums.. or just skate in more oil.  with a little less surface, it seemed to do about the same, just on less oil.. mediums it would skate.. lighter it would roll early and die.  When I polished it, it was usable on medium-light oil, but was somewhat over/under.. and I had better choices for that condition.  I don't think the ball was a flop.. just didn't really fit well with me.

Strapper, a few years ago I bought a ball that was the same way for me, the Track Super Freak. It was a heavy load particle and I bought it for the soup. Had it drilled strong and could not get it to do anything, changed surfaces, polished it, went to different houses and and tried it on different patterns, nothing! Plugged and redrilled, same results. Plug and redrill again, the same. Gave it away to a friend for nothing and not only did he hook the crap out of it, but he threw a 300 with it his second game. Sometimes a ball just doesn't match up with your game! Thanks for all the help!!
