Ball for above a Mercury
« on: February 05, 2011, 04:57:43 AM »
I am looking to put something above my Roto Mercury. I tried a Mars a while back and get something below my Mercury. I have a Pluto but I want to leave that sanded and I am looking to use this on a lighter pattern where the Mercury is great for the last half of the night but just not enough to quite make it around the corner on the fresh shot. I can throw my Cell Pearl in the beginning of the night but I am playing pretty deep and by the middle of game two I have to take a huge step right and move to the Mercury but it usually takes a couple frames to get locked back in since the entire line and break point are different. I was thinking maybe a Rising Star? But I am worried that might still not be enough and I am worried the a Nomad line ball might be too much. I throw about 14.5 mph down lane with about 375 rpms.

Locke,

Please realize that the Mercury and the Mars used different cores. Yes, it was only turned upside down, but the differences it produced in ball reaction was much more than that.

The Mercury version created balls that were much more rolly in nature, whereas the modified core created and more "normal" reaction: more length (not a lot) and more backend. I am almost shocked that your Mars was less ball than the Mercury, but I wonder if some of that is not attributable to its rollier nature (it tried to set up earlier than the Mars).

If you need something stronger than the Mercury (I read this as earlier and handling more oil. Please correct me if I'm wrong), given the lack of Planet series balls available, I'd suggest a Riot (the solid one) with a good amount of polish and a longish pin-PAP distance, maybe in the range of 5" (maybe 5.5"). The Riot normally handles up to medium oil, but polish + the longish pin should drop it down to handling just a little more than the Mercury.

I have thrown the Riot, and it is truly one of Roto's most verstile pieces!

OOB I was able to throw it on med-hvy oil. Polished, I was able to throw it on medium, med-lite, and lite oil. I can throw it on a broken down shot as well, but hand/release adjustments have to be made, and I have to go straighter to be effective. Still....it is truly one of the best pieces Roto has ever made, IMO.
