Dry lane ball?
« on: March 21, 2008, 05:27:49 PM »
I am looking for a Storm/Roto arsenal and am searching for a dry lane ball. I have a Neptune, but it hooks less than my plastic ball...I was thinking and I remembered I really liked my Sonic X Pearl in the past. What ball could be good for me? Was thinking of...

Mercury/Sonic X/Boom/Ultra Sonic (If I can find any)
Sonic X Solid/Pluto/Saturn (Too strong?)

Any help will be appreciated!

How is your Neptune drilled?
I ask because the Nep seems to have 2 different personalities: one when drilled with a high, long pin and one with a lower, closer pin.

If yours is 5" or more, pin-PAP, with pin above the bridge area, try a pin at or below the bridge level with a 3.5" pin to PAP.

Also, you can adjust the surface of the Neptune. Try sanding it to 4000 grit and leaving it matte, OR sand it to about 800 or 1000 grit and pt just a light coat of polish on it. Like most resins, it repsonds to cover changes.

Otherwise the Venus is the next step up from the Neptune, but beware, this is a devastating ball. Once you get one, you may want to get another with another drill. An alternative to the Venus is a polished Pluto.

I have a Neptune that I have drilled with the pin high over the ring finger for super length which it does. I tried it at 2000 grit and 4000 grit both with and without polish, ball went to long hit very weak with no pop to it. I then tried 800 grit with just a little polish bam what a supper difference. Ball goes long then goes and makes a hard controlled arc to the pocket crushing the pins in it's way. Try this coverstock change you won't be dissappointed.

Mine is drilled pin down at about 4.5" from PAP...I believe it is still at factory...changing surfaces in Louisville is getting pretty expensive, so I don't want to make any changes unless I'm fairly certain I will see a change...

What do you guys suggest...and what about the other balls?

I remember my Sonix Pearl would get great length and still have a great finish. Is there any newer ball that can replicate that reaction?

...and I have seen the Venus in action...that's a totally different monster. Looks like a great ball, but not what I'm looking for right now...

I have a Mercury and love it. It is really weak but still hits like a truck. Don't be afraid to drill it strong otherwise it will be just like your Neptune.
Always be sincere, even when you don't mean it.

Something's not right, if you see that big a difference between the Neptune and the Venus. The Venus is just the next step above the Neptune. Or there's a bigger discrepancy in your profile between your ball speed (17 - 19) and your rev rate (tweener/cranker).

There's very little difference between the Sonic-X Pearl and the Neptune. Are you sure they were drilled the same? or maybe you only remember the Sonic-x's reaction once some wear was made on the cover to produce more reaction?

CHanging the surface is th echeapest thing you can do. Certainly it is much chepaer than buying a new ball!

Well, for me the Venus will hook about 20 boards total and the Neptune will hook 3-5...I just think the Neptune is an anomaly to the way I play.
