New benchmark.... Retro Resurrection throwback?
« on: January 31, 2017, 09:34:25 AM »
Hey guys, got an itch to find something similar to a ball I LOVED back in the day. I'm not up to date with everything that is offered today and I'm sure some of you guys will have an idea(s) that will work to fill this need.

Currently I have a lock, which I love but it makes me work so hard to keep it tame as our lanes are VERY track focused and anything that snifs the outside is left of the head pin for me. I have an original silver streak drilled pin on axis which works great for lane control but gets really flippy at times or I feel it tends to hold too much energy and I have flat leads or splits galore.

I keep thinking that I'm missing a gap filler, benchmark ball which will be first out and allow me to play my strengths and not fight through the pattern. The ball that comes to mind the most is my Retro Resurrection which was drilled pin under and was pure control for me. Sadly it perished during a move years ago and I've never really filled in that void. Most of my equipment is old but it works so why change it.

I've been looking at the HP2ish line from roto grip as well as the hyroad pearl and rocket ship. The ball will be drilled pin under, I produce a good amount of natural hook (span is 6", hard to not turn the ball), but I also use hand positions to be able to tame the ball if needed. Right now I'm leaning toward the rocket ship but figure I'd ask here to see what everyone thinks what series is comparable to the Retro, roto grips site says the HP2 line is for comparison, does this mean the rocket ship will be too strong for what I'm trying to achieve?

Thank you,
James

I feel a controllable smooth benchmark could be an IQ tour solid.

Anyone else think the same?
In the bag [Infinite Physix, Volatility Torque, Night Road, Phaze III, Burner Solid, Hustle AU]

I agree with Bill. My mind also went to the Rocket Ship then I seen later down you already mentioned it yourself. The Ship is being discontinued sonyoy could probably get a decent deal from your PSO on it.

You sure about that? It's still listed in the Thunder section on Storm's website. If the Rocket Ship is on it's way out then I would assume the Torrent will be really close. Same coverstock and similar core numbers.

I read the thread on the Rocket ship and it said it was as good if not better than the IQ tour so I figure for the price difference it would be perfect. My only issue is if the rocket ship is too aggressive of a ball for what I'm looking for, the HP2 recommendation on the Roto site has me gun shy

100% agree with Bill.  Everyone should have an IQ Tour solid, especially if you bowl in tournaments.  In my opinion it is one of the best balls ever made.

For the HP2 stuff from Roto Grip, especially the Wreck-It and Wreck-Em, it's a LOT of ball for the price. Either of those two might actually be too strong for what you're looking for. Most of what I've read and seen leads me to believe the Wreck-It is firmly above the Rocket Ship. Not much feedback on the Wreck-Em yet but TamerBowling has a really nice review of it and they have it as a fairly strong ball too. You might actually be better off getting one of the first two Hustle balls and bringing it to a sanded surface.

My recommendation would be the !Q Tour solid though. For a true benchmark reaction that's at the top of the line for Storm and Roto Grip.

My PSO was telling me last night at league they just disco'd them and he could get me a deal on it if I wanted to try one. Maybe they will keep it up for a few more weeks, not really sure on that one.

Could call on the Hustle line Coor. Seems like the PRO with a touch of surface is something great.

Interesting. The ball pages from all the sites are usually pretty up-to-date so I'm guessing it will be moved to the classic section soon.

For what it's worth I think the Rocket Ship would fit in nicely with the balls you have listed in your signature.

Thank you, the only thing that turns me off with the !Q is the fact that I have the Lock and for me it's very versatile but I still find it rolls too heavy for me if it even snifs a dry board. Could the Hectic possibly be the ball in the HP2 line that would be just a touch smoother than the rocket ship and still provide the out the gate "benchmark" line I'm looking for.

Thanks Coor. I've definitely been on the fences about trying it.

Update- spur of the moment choice but I decided to go with a Hustle POW which I will drill pin under and knock the surface a bit off the bat. I figure it's better to go a tad lighter in ball choice and go up if needed (hectic is my next choice) rather than get a rocket ship or something like that and really hate my decision.

I see a great value in the POW due to the fact that a lot of the time I end up throwing plastic in the 2nd and 3rd games and still hooking 8-10 boards or more. The pow seems like a great happy medium for everything I'm looking for and if the test turns out to not be exact I will still have a great middle game option instead of my old white dot.
