Toasty Dry?
« on: May 26, 2004, 11:46:33 PM »
I currently using the Sonic Boom for short light oil condition, drilled stacked with 2 2/4" pin. The ball is great with good length and great carry. Great ball from RG.

However, on a extreme dry condition like the last squad on a tourment or even getting into the semi the Sonic Boom is still too strong, I can play inside line but not very comfortable with it.

Should I get another Boom with different layout or go for the Sonic X pearl? Or even pearl urethane?  Any suggestion on diff layout?

Your suggestion is greatly appreciated.

I would not venture to get a Sonic (either one) for toasty....it's too much...you'd be better off w/ urethane pearl........

The Sonics, while having a fairly high RG and small RG differential, have a decently strong coverstock. So it's hard to tell if you can still use a resin ball and there are several that are weaker than the Sonics. I kind of like the Dyno-Thane Barrage;with a slight shine over the stock ball, it goes very long on fairly dry lanes and stil hits resin-hard.

There are several new balls that may be as useful as the Barrage on fairly dry lanes: AMF Scamp, and the Storm Big Hit.

There are also several resin with the old fashioned, weak pancake core: Ebonite Tornado Warning and Storm's Hit series.

After that there's the pearl urethanes with dynamic cores; they don't go as long as resin but they have weaker backends: Visionary Slate Blue Gargoyle, Columbia Trooper, Lane#1 XXL.

Lastly, there's the Lane#1 XXXL, a plastic coverstock with a dynamic core.

An unknown quantity is th enew Visionary Centaur. I suspect it may be useful with a polish and pin above the bridge/ring finger, BUT that is sheer speculation on my part, as of this moment.

I suggest either the Barrage or the Scamp, as your next logical, "significant" step below the Sonic Boom. I have a 15 lb and a 16lb Barrage. I can vouch for them being below the Sonic Boom. As for whether it's enough below your Sonic Boom, for your dry and your hand, I can only guess.

I wholeheartedly second Jeff's comments about the pearl urethane, I have a Blue Pearl Urethane Hammer (from the old school) which i use when it gets TOASTY, i'm talkin lanes haven't been oiled in a month, teenage desk attendant's forehead has more oil than the lanes, TOASTY!  The urethane pearl is absolutely perfect for this condition, I can't stress enough how much I wish I had this ball during my collegiate years, it would have been a lifesaver in the 5th and 6th games of those blocks.
