couple of Q's on the Odyssey and the SD 73
« on: April 19, 2007, 11:12:24 AM »
Hello Group,

I am in the market for a heavy oiler again. I had the Epic-Battle last year and I really liked it but now its that time of the year to upgrade lol!!!

Anyway, the two that I am interested in are the Odyssey and the SD-73 Classic however, if you guys can set me straight on the SD-73 Classic as I am kinda confused about it.

Seems that some are saying that the ball is bad ball all around but reading some peoples reviews here it seems the ball is a great ball to have for a heavy oil shot too.

So can you guys/gals who have both of these balls please tell me your opinion on them. I am going to Las Vegas in early June and last year the shot was pretty wet so I want to come prepared this year!!!

Thanks

Out of the box I think the Odyssey can handle a bit more oil than the SD-73. The Odyssey is a bit more angular than the SD-73. Both hit and carry well, especially on light hits. But for heavy oil....I mean real heavy oil, you still can't beat the Epic Battle. If the conditions are a little less than true heavy oil, then either the Odyssey or the SD-73 work well. I'd vote for the Odyssey but I have both and love both, but I'm using the Odyssey the most.

sd-73 can handle the heavy. my freind has one and on fresh oiled lanes i could not keep from going brooklyn no matter how far left i stood. he is more of a stroker and im a cranker. i do have to give props to the sd-73 for hitting power and forgiveness. i have seen him get away with ALOT of bad shots and still strike. im talking about like hitting the 3 - 6 and striking.

You will not regret the Odyssey. Ummm..okay....maybe I should change that to you won't regret purchasing the Epic Odyssey from Roto Grip. After all, Odysseus probably did regret his Odyssey. But then it was his own fault messing with Poseidon. We bowlers know that you always pay proper respect to the bowling Gods! Anyway...you'll like the Odyssey. OOB it will handle most heavy oil situations you'll find yourself in.

Just came from the Roto-Grip web site and according to their chart the Odyssey is a med oil-ball and not a heavy oil ball that I was led to believe it was or is their chart incorrect?

Also, the chart has the SD-73 Classic as the more oil ball.

Both the SD and Odyssey and handle similar amounts of oil.  They both have very strong solid resin covers, lowish to low RGs and high flare.  They just have really different reaction shapes like Mark mentioned.  Odyssey has much more angle and the SD is more even rolling.

I believe the difference in the reaction chart is attributed to the difference in OOB finish (1000 vs 2000).  The Odyssey easily can handle heavy oil.
