UC3
« on: November 30, 2021, 09:59:51 PM »
IT'S ABOUT TIME. To be honest, I have been so frustrated by getting beat by the PH every weekend. Don't get me wrong, our Pitch Blacks are good but we were just missing a shape like the PH. We've got the early tumble if you want and the quick downlane if you need, now. I'm competitive. I bowl regionals. This ball will be out of the bag, on the rack on any pattern with a 3 as the first number of length. This ball booms off friction, sets in the oil and keeps its surface longer than any urethane ball SPI has made thus far. Overall, the UC3 bridges the gap between Pitch Blacks and Hustle PRBs. It's a true bridge between reactive and urethane that will give you control on the fresh and shape when it shines up. I can't wait for you to get your hands on this monster!!!

I have it. Got it the day it came out and while my skills don't lend themselves to giving a full review on equipment anymore, I'll say the same things about the ball I said on another forum ...

* It is truly a different ball than anything else on the market right now with the possible exception of the Purple Hammer, and it's a good bit stronger than the PH is.

* I really think it's the next step in evolution for modern urethane coverstocks. It takes the best of urethane and mixes it with the most usable elements of a mid-strength reactive.

* I also have the 900 Global Infused Badger and it's a much different animal than that. Not only a completely different core design (not to mention asym in the UC3 vs. sym for the IB), but the cover on the UC3 is going to be usable on a much wider range of lane conditions.

* The best analogy to this ball, outside of however similar you might find a Purple Hammer, is to go back in time to the old Visionary Slate Blue Gargoyle, except the UC3 is many, many degrees stronger. I mention the SBG because it was the first (and to this point, one of the rare few) urethane balls that actually would hockey-stick a bit in the backend naturally, without being touchy. It's hard to get angularity out of urethane as we all know, but the SBG came by it naturally and so does the UC3. Except the UC3 can handle a lot more oil volume.

For people who like urethane, you either need the Purple Hammer, this ball, or both. Otherwise you're leaving a big gap in your urethane arsenal. And between those two, I would pick the UC3 based on what I've seen so far. Two straight weeks in league for me now that every game with the UC3 was over my average, and I was able to stay with a single ball longer instead of having to do a lot of ball swapping.

I have a 900 Global Shadow Ops that I absolute love. Its a 80 urethane/20 reactive blend. I have a Badger 70/30 but hooks a lot with the lanes I bowl on, so it acts like more a pearl ball than urethane to me. Have you throw a Shadow Ops? If so, is there a big difference between the UC3 and Shadow Ops?

I have not, but I have a former teammate who has. I would say the Shadow Ops is a lot closer to the 70/30 IB than it is the UC3.

The UC3 is going to be earlier, more continuous, and pop bigger on the backend than either of those balls. The continuousness (and the subsequent effect on pin carry) is what makes me really sit up and take notice with the UC3.

I had to take my 70/30 IB up to 4000 and put just a slight touch of a slip agent on it to get it to clear the heads, and also drill it a little weaker. I can definitely see the argument that it is more resin-like than urethan-like. The UC3, I'm just struggling to categorize at all. It's like we've created a new class of balls somewhere in between strong resin and strong urethane.

How does the uc3 compare to the fever pitch orange pearl urethane? I hated the fever pitch. That ball was over under for me. Hooked a ton in the dry.  I had a strong drilling in it so maybe that was it. Not sure but I just don’t think that ball was any good.  Never see any tour players using it, mostly pitch blacks instead. Also does this new tour urethane cover absorb any Oil like reactivate or repell  it like a true urethane cover?  I have a motiv covert tank which I absolutely love for a house shot. Wonder how it compares to the covert tanks similar numbers. Strong core, high diff, high flare urethane microcell polymer type cover. I’m intrigued by this ball. I think it may match up for me with my slow ball speed 13 mph, and low tilt,  high track heavy roll. Covert tank matches up well for me on over under high friction track house shots.

The UC3 is way stronger on the backend than the Fever Pitch as it backends like a resin ball.  The UC3 is one of the rare cases where you will be able to use urethane playing deeper on the lane instead of being one dimensional playing between the gutter and the track area.

The Fever Pitch I believe was supposed to be Storm's version of the Purple Hammer and it just didnt quite live up to that.  Jesper Svensson used it a couple times on TV but didnt really look all that great even with him throwing it.  Jakob Butturff made the Purple Hammer look like the God ball for high revving left handers.  He almost single handedly made that ball what it is.  Jesper was the one person to make the Fever Pitch look good to compete with the Purple Hammer and it didnt work out.

I have one, but it's way too strong for what I needed. I resurfaced to 2000 and it's still too much.

I think I will take it to 5500 and try again next week.

Anyone have a final disposition on what the cover is? Is it 100% urethane? Is it a mix like the Badger Infused? Something else (like Motiv’s Frixion Microcell)??

It doesn't appear to my eye to be pure urethane. Most older style urethane balls I have seen have a dull look when sanded. Even with a 1000 surface, this one has some shine to it, right out of the box.

Also, I noticed last night, the oil doesn't sit on the cover like other urethane balls I have used. It doesn't soak in as fast as some reactives, but more slowly similar to what I have seen with my Motiv Tank Blitz.

Thanks Milo. With the super backend I wouldn’t believe this is 100% urethane either.

Hey milo, how would you rate the overall hook and shape compared to your tank blitz? Just wondering if there would be a place in my bag for both my covert tank and a uc3?

For me, the Blitz rolls earlier and has less down lane pop. The UC3 is impressive at the breakpoint. I think the overall hook is similar.

I kinda wondered if the UC3 cover is a Pearl variation of the Spec cover we saw on the Pro Motion and Crux Prime. It was very urethane like it terms of friction response but obviously much stronger than traditional urethane.

Thanks milo. If I get a uc3 I could always smooth surface it to say 4000 like you said you may do, then maybe even polish it. I’m just worried the tank and uc3 will react and roll to close to another (overlap) being urethane type..
I already have too many balls that do that. Good to know that the uc3 takes to surface adjustment better than typical Urethane. Nice looking ball as well. Grey pearl is sweet.

Similar oil absorption but still different.
