Value of SD-73
« on: April 02, 2005, 03:39:00 PM »
I had an SD-73, and I recently traded it for an Utimate Inferno. *runs and hides* lol I am curious about this ball. I am young and I only got into bowling about 3 yrs ago, and I had read some vauge things on the internet that mentioned that there was a bit of a controversy over this ball regarding PBA use. I see that it was eventually cleared for use, and the talk had died down by the time I really started looking at purchasing my own equipment. The ball was great to me, but I wanted something for a bit heavier oil. i.e. Ultimate.
I guess my questions are...
Was this ball more valuable due to it's notoriety?
Was it a particularly rare ball?
Should I have held on to it?
Or do some people just love how it rolls... I sure did!

Thanks!

It was too soft at the time to meet PBA regulations(73 on the durometer scale).  It's probaly one of the biggest hooking resins ever.  The super high flare potential borders on the legal limits(.080, the SD-73 is at .075).  Basically, it hooks and flares a ton, but it's no magical ball that'll give you an advantage over anyone else.

I have one that's drilled axis leverage that hits like a freight train. And it flared more than any of the resin balls I have.

was it used ball for used ball or NIB for NIB?

sounds to me like you got the better part of the deal.

used for used.

And I hope I got at least an ok deal. I am pretty sure I did. I think barring any extreme rarity or anything like that it was a good deal all around.I traded with the user Umungus. He was highly recommended and very helpful. I don't think anyone came out a loser in this one.
Thanks for the responses guys!

Actually Tim, a bargain is in the eye of the beholder.

I traded my single drill UI for bowlitup's SD-73. For my money the SD-73 is the best ball ever made! If Roto Grip came to me to custom make me a ball, it would have been the SD-73.

Ben had one in his profile he was no longer using and I had a UI that I wasn't using. It was a pretty simple deal. I think the deal was pretty even. Ben getting what he wants and I got what I wanted.

Ben, the SD-73 is a pretty rare ball these days. But I assume it is because it's an older ball. They seem to fetch a good price on Ebay. I assume again because of the banned reputation. The reason I seek out these balls is because they fit my game like a glove. I personally don't see a reason to have a ball lying around when you can trade it off for something new.

I haven't had much success with the Cyclotron cores so I'll stick with what works for me.

Thanks,
Donald

I saw an sd-73 for bid on ebay and bid $75 and thought I might have a chance. It went for $127.59 plus $15 shipping. It was a once drill in like new shape. I wonder how much it sold for new?

I have been around the game for a few years and never saw one in person.

Bowl,

You should have just traded it to me.  But I dunno if I would have made that trade.  Simply because the SD-73's have a killer lifespan(as I am sure you know), with the Ultimate I am not as sure as to the lifespan but I have seen many that have died out.  But that is just my opinion, what is done is done, I will never approve anyone throwing anything else then Roto-Grip.

That was an overseas SD-73. I've never seen one before.

I had planned to buy it, however even I have my limits of what I'd pay for a used ball.

some guy at our bowling alley has one. i threw it a few times and so did other people. it hits something nasty and always seems to make pins scatter a lot. other guy threw it and got 14 in a row. if you get an abs nanadesu the ball hits similar to that
