Wanting to Switch-A Sad Day
« on: October 06, 2006, 12:21:14 PM »
So i was just informed that over 3/4ths of my equipment is screwed up because the person who drilled them drilled them all the same so they react ALL THE SAME!! Which includes, my hawg-that i just got done YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, my ONE, my Blade Pearl, Doom, Big One and my Big Deal. The BIG ONE is fine because it has a 4 inch pin and it doesn't react like the rest and my doom is great but i can't do anything else so rather than spend money on balls already messed up because of sideweight etc.

I wanna switch to ROTOGRIP. What would be a good 4 ball combo. No need of spare ball i have one. I also need something for collegiate sport shots. Any help would be great and LAYOUT PLEZE IF YOU COULD I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT.

Thanks.

Honestly, with a 166 average, I wouldnt go out and invest in a new arsenal. The 8 you have should be enough. Those balls are vastly different and even drilled the same there is no way a Tropical Storm and a Big One yield the same reaction.

sorry i 4got to change that im 198 now. i don't use them all just got them listed. some about half are retired or about to be retired. i only use my big one and doom. Maybe the one will see some action and my spare ball. Yeah the tropical storm and the big one are significantly different however the one and overtime react the same, the big deal and hawg react EXACTLY the same so there's and my blade pearl and Doom react them same, well my doom is a bit stronger and my b.p. is somewhat of a dud.

If you look at many of the pro's arsenals, as well as our own Jeff Carter, you will notice that most of them find a drill pattern that they like the reaction of the best and use it on 90% of their equipment and just vary the pin height above or below the fingerline to help enhance a ball's reaction or help it fill a hole in their arsenal.

What drill pattern is used on your equipment, I can't tell by the pictures? Please also post your Positive Axis Point Measurements.

If you live in the Chicago area, go take a few lessons from Bill Spigner at Hawthorn Lanes, he will help you figure out what to do.

I just looked at the various pictures, and I find it very hard to believe that they will all react the same.   As CoachJim said, what is you PAP?  Pin position relative to grip without the PAP is pretty much useless for figuring out ball reaction.

Besides, what's wrong with redrilling?

Agreed with the redrilling issue.  Nothing wrong with that.  Hell, my RS-1 is on Drill #3, and it's still a tank.

If you don't like the reaction, a good proshop would offer to plug and redrill at minimal to no cost.  A good driller understands the fact that he must maintain clients to keep his business.  See if your driller will do this.  If not, or you're serious about switching to Roto:

Epic Battle
Epic Saga
Horizon Pearl
Saturn, or Mercury, depending on how light your light oil condition is.

As far as the collegiate sport shots, the Battle and the Saga would work perfectly.  My girlfriend bowls collegiately, but she's not as equipment oriented as most (Has two Oracle Vision's, one drilled with the pin IN the ring, and the other pin below the ring).  On one of the tougher shots, she had trouble making her first Vision (In the ring) turn the corner at all.  So, she got the second Vision and had it drilled to read the lane sooner.  I'm thinking about talking her into taking the surface down as well, probably somewhere around 600.  As far as a Roto arsenal, those 4 should cover any condition except toast.  There isn't really a current line-up ball from Roto made for absolute toast, if plastic isn't your style.

Hopefully this helps.

yeah i don't know where some of you all live but it costs roughly 30-40 bucks to plug and redrill the ball. But it's kinda late becuase i already won a roto and my old proshop driller who im goin back to got me a deal on a venus and spare tire and i caught a great deal from Pba1g11 on a saga, but for some reason i don't like redrilling, i don't know why, it just doesn't seem to react the same or better. i got a V2 power redrilled and i hated it the first and second time. i guess its jus 1 bad xperience, but i wanted to try a new company anyway so i guess this was my way out.

Regarding the necessity to redrill balls.

If you have the same drill pattern on all those different cores and surfaces you might not be stuck with the same type of reaction.

I have a friend...he has an up the back release...he uses many many many places a sort of label leverage setup.  Pin next to ring or slightly up or down with his cg tucked in!  And just varies surface(sort of Like walter RAy type approach and a similar delivery).  He bowls well almost everywhere.

I've seen I'm a redbird in video...198 average is not a surprise to me....

Regarding a switch to rotogrip it sounds like a fun adventure(they have good stuff).  It does not sound necessary but sounds like something to do!
