when old is new...
« on: July 22, 2003, 09:17:27 PM »

You would have sworn that it was a new ball on the market from the way people were clamoring...after all, it was one they hadn't seen me throwing before and they know that I only throw RG...and they definitely weren't used to seeing me go down the boards except for during the first rehab return after breaking the hand...but here was this gold orb being tossed with control and carrying the house save for the occasional single pin while others elsewhere were whining about conditions.  The minimal but crisp white engraving, the shiny new appearance...

I could have sold a half-dozen Gold Grenade's last night

Roger, you may have to talk Hank into doing some re-releases

Jeff,  There's pearl urethane and there's pearl urethane!

So, Michelle, is this ball equivalent (not identical) to th ered and blue pearl Hammers of old?

charlest...I would have to say very similar...not surprising considering the Gold Grenade is something like 15 years old  Good old fashioned two-piece pearl urethane...but these are next to impossible to find NIB, which is why I jumped all over it when I found it late last year.

Michelle,
Glad you got yours; must be some ferocious dry where you are. I used my blue pearl for a while (ton of them on the internet) as spare ball and dry lanes combo. Unfortunately, I now find plastic and DT Barrage provide better and safer coverage for that combo; still I'm not giving my Blue Pearl away yet.

Not so much ferocious dry as spotty lanes...and I have been working on making the major jumps from 5th and 6th arrow to changing balls to play down the 2-3 board.  Pearl urethane lets me get some time in playing down the boards from waaaaaay right while still retaining the hitting power.

And, hey...it let me keep my arsenal all in the Roto Grip family, which is, after all, what my game is all about

Having to play the 5th and 6th arrow is obscene; can hardly call it bowling, to my tiny little mind. If pearl urethane is a logical and practical alternative, then wonderful.

ah, a necessary "evil".

I agree it WOULD be a great idea to re-release a urethane ball, BUT money is the issue as it always is.  In the customer's mind if they purchase a urethane ball today they think they should pay $20.00 less than a 3 piece or 4 piece reactive ball.  If we did that we would have to sell them for the price of our spare balls.  You see what I am saying?  It would be great but no one (well not no one) would purchase a urethane ball for more than 100 bucks.

Glad to hear you are bowling some more Michelle

Thanks,

People are dropping over 100.00 on XXXL.  And that isn't even urethane!

Brainwashing.  Between their prices and the fact that they don't want to tell you what cover or core is in their new equipment, I wonder why anyone buys the stuff.  Yes, I've had a few, didn't like em.

Roto Grip seems to be doing a lot of good things lately.  Nice variety of high and low end stuff, both in hook and price.  The numbers might not be great, but I think quite a few people would buy a mild 2 piece urethane ball.  The Sonics are cool, but resin can still be too jumpy on some conditions.

I don't know, Roger. Some people who appreciate their value might.

Drop the Sonic Boom core in a pearl urethane, man, I think I could go $100 for one of those.
