Questions for Roger, Hank or Steve Richter or whoever can chime in and is in the know.

How does the Dark Star's/Riot's Ultimate Vision cover strength compare to the Nomad's Ultra Vision and the Pluto's/Saturn's Sure Grip II?

Also it seems the new balls have a version of the Jolt core not sure about densities????

Are these new balls a step down from the Nomads and a step up from the old Planet line?  It would seem so but cover strength may dictate that.

We'd like to know so we don't overlap.

The price point is great BTW!

Thanks!

In terms of cover strength, assuming that this is the same cover that was on the Illusion, the cover on the Dark/Riot will be weaker than the Nomads.  The Nomads have a deceptively strong cover with a good amount of midlane.  Much better at handling volume than the Illusions.  The design intent is for the Dark Star to fill that gap when the Nomads just don't push as well but the Planets just don't have enough cover and core downlane.  I've seen this quite frequently with the low volume/long length patterns I've seen.  A gap filler between the Nomads and Planets.

Regarding the core, I suspect the Dark/Riot will tend to be relatively smooth since most of the time you will be drilling into the top of the core thus lowering the RG and possibly the diff.

Hello,

These balls are being introduced in the Roto Grip Shield Line.  The Roto Grip brand is phasing out the planet series and moving in a new direction.  You are correct this is a modified jolt core.  We wanted something new and needed wanted to get back to the reaction characteristics we had with the Saturn and Venus which were much stronger than the Neptune and Pluto.  Just the overall evolution of the product line.

Also, the price point is $4 lower to the distributor.  That can translate to as high as $10 - $20 less at the MSRP, but the pro shops will charge whatever they feel the product is worth.  We wanted to make sure the Shield line wasn't too close to the Storm Hot line and still in between the Storm Tropical and Hot lines.

Hope that helps.

As for some of the reaction questions I can't be as specific on those matters.  I'd highly suggest emailing tech@rotogrip.com for more information.  We did do some extensive testing against the Pluto and Neptune along with some competitors balls.  That was all done by the technical department.

Thanks,

Maybe they are in that price range. The online e-tailers price does not necessarily directly correlate with what distributors charge the local pro shops. I will be happy if they are price competitive with the Freeze. The planet balls are not. The Dark Star and Riot on paper look like good balls and if we (pro shops) can afford to sell them in the Tropical/Rayzr/Freeze price range that will help alot.

I will check with my distributor and report back to this thread with the approximate pro shop price range.

To follow up with what Roger is saying, from my perspective the price from my distributor will come in slighly above the Freeze/Tropical price point and slightly below the Storm Hot line.  Assuming performance is where it is targeted I have high hopes for these balls.

Sounds like they are going to be a tad weaker but also about 10 bucks cheaper.

I will be getting a Dark Star to go below my Mars.  Looking forward to it.

I think the Dark Star will be stronger than the Mars.  Depending on layout.

Buddy I hope you don't try that. The Dark Star has a stronger core and stronger cover. You will never be able to pul it off man.

You guys really think so?  Other than a slightly lower RG, i figured that would be made up by it having a pearl coverstock vice the Mars being a hybrid.

The Riot and Dark Star use the Ultimate Vision cover which is what was on the Illusion and Epic series balls. It is a very strong cover on a fairly weak core. It will move a lot more than the Mars or Pluto. These balls were designed to fill the gap between the Planet balls and the Nomads.
