From what you say, a surface change is needed to get it to read the midlane properly. I'd start off by hazing the surface with a Scotch-Brite pad (probably the light grey one) first, depending on how far past the breakpoint it is skidding. If hazing ("cracking the surface") doesn't work, then try a fresh 4000 grit pad (Abralon, Siaair, or neaT is good) for about 15 seconds per side.
Try each "fix" thoroughly before jumping to the next one. If necessary, try 3000, then 2000 grit pads. Once you get as low as 2000 grit, you're in danger of making the ball require more oil.
