Mutant Cell Pearl - review (house/sport/surface)
« on: May 28, 2010, 07:03:14 AM »
Here is my Mutant Cell Pearl review:
-Drilled:  4.5  x  4 x  2" pin buffer
-PAP -  5  1/4  x  1  3/8 up
-Ball speed  18 mph (medium)
-Revs (Medium - High)

-HOUSE SHOT 40ft THS - BOX FINISH:
The Mutant Cell pearl was very angular. On the Fresh House shot this ball comes off the backend sideways and hits super hard with great continuation. Surprisingly about this ball is that it also reads the midlane very well and never quits on the backend.

-HOUSE SHOT/ SPORT PATTERNS - 2000 abralon - no polish
This ball took to surface adjustment very well!! I took the ball to 2000 and the ball was smoother on the back but still had great punch and continuation on the backend. The only difference with the reaction was that it blended the house shot better and read a tad bit smoother on the backend.

-SCORPION PATTERN
With the extra length/volume on the Scorpion pattern I was still able to move in an play 15-10 with ease. I had a few shots that got into 12 and as far out as 8 and still the ball had a magnet to the pocket. I could go on and on about this ball on this pattern but I think it speaks for itself on the video.

-CHEETAH PATTERN (pba experience league)
This was the true to test to see this balls versatility, 35ft. In practice the gutter played a bit over/under - My last shot I rolled this ball 5-3 and the ball put 10 back so I decided to stay with it and see what this ball can do on this pattern.  Well with the outsides playn a bit tighter then normal and the guys on my lane playing inside of me and pushing the oil out to me I was able to stay with this ball for the entire 4 games and I am glad I did as I went onto averaging 248 on the pattern!!!

This ball is getting a 5 STAR PLUS Rating from me, I look forward to having a HUGE season with this ball. For video please see www.videoballreviews.com

Sean,

Heres a visual of what TJ saw of the Mutant Cell vs a Mutant Cell Pearl

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyUtiDiji5I

He is the second tester in my video.  Im sure he can chime in too since he has thrown it more since the video.  His mutant cell was at about 4000 abralon when we shot this video.

I watched the video great job guys. I had a cell and loved it I was thinking up picking up a mutant cell and a pearl for a 1-2 punch along with my backlash for my league. How do the mutant's compare to a regular cell, and how would they best complement each other. Thank you the help is much appreciate.

britton/tj, the mutant cell pearl looks VERY ANGULAR!! but what i want to know is how the grenade compares to the storm natural?

because im thinking of adding the grenade along with my natural for my light, dry conditions.

Its tough to tell since we both went with different layouts on our grenades than our naturals.  I actually felt it was a little stronger than my natural, but like i said i dont know if it was because of layout or not.

Basically what Roto Grip has done is taken the reactions from the Cell series and enhanced them.  When a ball comes out that rolls (and sells) well there is no reason to do anything really drastically different to the reaction in my opinion.  Just some tweaks here and there.

If you haven''t seen these videos take a look.  Storm filmed one of their pro shop seminars when they introduced the mutant cell and Hank Boomershine explains the concept behind the Mutant Cell and how it evolved from the Cell

Lots of good information in there from the person behind the designs!

Sean12x: In a comparison with the Original Mutant.. The Original Mutant hooks  earlier with its solid coverstock and is much smoother on the backend. Where the Mutant Pearl is longer and more on the back. On the THS/ Sport pattern I am going to say the solid is about 3-5 feet sooner then the pearl. And I have the Original Cell drilled up much weaker (5  x 5)then my Mutants so obviously its going to be an overall weaker piece in my bag. But also if you go into videoballreviews.com we did do a comparison with the Original Cell vs Mutant back when the Mutant was 1st released. With watching both videos you may be able to get a pretty good idea with the difference.

ballstar76: In my opinion The Grenade is a bit earlier and a bit more hook. Now I have my Grenade drilled Rico and the Natural with a higher pin. So what I did was kept the Grenade OOB finish and I polished my Natural to get a drastic difference on the lane.

Guys I hope this helps, thanks for your questions.. Ill be glad to answer anything else you need.
