Layouts on the Desperado
« on: January 13, 2010, 07:14:16 AM »
My Desperado just came in today. I bought the ball to use on shorter patterns and/or the drier stages of tournaments. Ball is 15 lbs 04 oz, 3-4" pin, 3.5 oz top weight. I've become rev dominant of late, and I'm looking for this ball to help even out things on the back. I track pretty low since I've made a grip change last summer. Axis is between 3.5-4" over and 1" up.

So my question remains how have you guys drilled up your Desperado? I'm unsure of how weak it actually is, so I do not want to drill it too weak and have it do nothing. Or vice versa, supposing it's weak, drilling it strong, and having it be too much. I was considering a longer pin, upwards of 5" away. But if there are any  opinions on the matter, I would like to hear them. Thanks!

Hey king I recently also got a Desperado for pretty much the same reasons you did.  I talked to DaveW on here and he recommended a 5-5.5 in pin to pap.  I put a 5 X 5 drill on mine and it does have an early move and roll to the pocket and hits like a truck.  it does how ever leave some interesting spare shots.  I am rev dominant like you and this ball definately smooths every thing out on the back.  i only have 2 series from league on it and i just threw it a game tonight.  I really like it so far.

My first game i threw it out of the box was a 279.  I left a pocket 5 pin in the 3rd frame.  I ended up leaving 2 5 pins that night, along with some other makeable spare shots, some i missed.  For me this ball isnt a very forgiving ball, if you miss your mark either left or right you arent going to have the backend ability of this ball to help get recovery(prob not the best wording for it.

After 6-8 games with it so far I definately like it alot.  I will try to make a full review when i get maybe about 5-6 more games on it.

Definately a good ball IMHO.

Did yours come at 4000 AB polished or 2000 AB, no polish? Mine was 2000 AB with no polish. It is pretty strong in that cover prep. As a comparison, on most conditions my Desperado with a 4 1/2" pin up( no x-hole) is about 5 or 6 left with my feet and 2 to 3 left with my target at the arrows as compared to my Natural with a 4" pin under(no x-hole). And it backends quite a bit more. If you didn''''''''t read my mini review earlier, here it is: Drilled my Christmas present 73* x 4 1/2 x 40*. Or 4 1/2 x 5 3/8 with a 2 1/2" pin buffer if you prefer. This ball is money! If you are rev dominant or speed challenged or bowl on short or burnt out conditions, this is THE ball! It would be a great option for seniors with lower ball speeds. I have used the ball on three day old ths and it is amazing how well it gets through the heads. On a fresh house shot with dry to the outside, it works well and carries well also. Great, controllable midlane read, and smooth but strong arc backend. The carry is more than I had hoped for from a urethane ball. It is a step up in power from another one of my favorites, the Natural. Probably due to the stronger asymmetrical core. For the bowler that realizes that the most hook is not necessarily the best thing, this ball is a must have! If you have some hand, this ball hooks more than enough on many conditions! I have not altered the surface yet, because it is working so good as is. I am sure you could get more length and some more backend with 4000 ab and /or some polish.

Pooh you are correct.  This is THE BALL if you do bowl on burnt/torched/over-under conditions.  I have had to move right which is really what I wanted this ball for, to play straighter with and eliminate the over/under condtions I usually see at the houses I bowl at.

Hooking the ball on a THS is definately something most league bowlers try to do,but not necessary, and I have recently realized this in the past 2-3 years when I did swing the ball all the time.  I have since moved significantly right and do swing the ball when need be but I now realize that with the line I usually play my scores got higher and carried better and also got a more consistant reaction.

I have a feeling I will really begin to love this ball and being urethane I know it will last forever.  I may try some cover changes after I get some games on it but I have bowled good in both league sets I used it in so I will push changing the surface for a little while.

The basic reaction I get out of this ball is a fairly early read and then gentle roll to the pocket with power at the pins that I wouldnt have though a urethane ball would be able to accomplish.

This ball is a definate must have if you do bowl on shorter, dry or over-under condtions.

Yeah mine is at 2000 grit with no polish. It's got a little sheen to it but nothing glossy. I was also thinking of drilling it with a control layout, short pin, but with what you guys said, it might be too flat on the backend? My other consideration was the 4 1/2-5" pin above the bridge. Would it be better to have the MB kicked out to help it check up faster and bleed a little backend off or have it in to help turn harder? Or even under the thumb?

Mine has the pin over the ring and the MB is pretty much in the thumb.

I really dont know too much about layouts and where the MB, CG or pin placements do to change the reaction.  I would put atleast a 5" Pin on it.

PM DaveW on here and I sure he would be glad to help.  I'm actually suprised he didnt chime in on this post.

With your high speed, it might be better to swing the mass bias a little closer to your pap than I did mine(5 3/8"-in the thumb hole). And if your speed is really 17.5 at the pindeck, you could probably drill it a little stronger, like 4-5" pin to pap. It's a strong ball, but it is still urethane. You won't have to worry about too much backend. I would pm DaveW and get his opinion, he helped me with mine and it works GREAT!

Since I've made a change in my grip, my ball speed has been way down. 16.5 is pretty normal lately. I've been trying to get it back up without forcing it, but it hasn't made much of a difference. So I still have my rev rate but ball speed is down too. That's why I thought the Desperado would make a good addition to my equipment. But I will talk to Dave and see what he thinks.

Reading this thread I thought I would drop in an FYI regarding the ball I used in the video on th website...

I have trouble playing the gutter for shorter patters with anything bu urethan because i havn't got lots of speed, but do have a lot of revs... so I wanted to make sure it didnt do too much, so went with around a 5.5 inch pin, just a little toward my middle finger from the bridge, and the MB at around 70 degrees, basically in the thumb.

As you can see from the video, the ball doesnt lope at all, like you can often get with low end or weaker balls drilled like this, and still carries great.

Thanks for all the input guys. I'll be drilling it up Monday, and I will comment after I throw it in practice.
