I am in the proshop in the team house. The team houe has synthetic heads and wood backends. You can play the track area, just don't get it right of 8 or it won't make it back. The doubles house is very old wood and usually the shot breaks down incredibly fast. From what I heard the shot last weekend was pretty wet which is unusual. If you have any questions let me know, or stop in to see me while your in town.

I bowled singles/doubles at Golden this past weekend. Selected third shift because lanes were SUPPOSED to be re-dressed after 2nd shift.... they weren't. The lane man bumped the head oil about 6feet, which lasted MAYBE till the 10 minute paractice was over. The lanes were TORCHED!! I'm a down-and-in stroker and wound up standing on 35, crossing the 5th arrow with SPEED, throwing a long-pin PEARL ball, and still couldn't keep it right of head-pin. My teammate was hooking his spare-ball(target Zone) twenty boards! Nobody scored on that condition... it was basically unplayable.

... and we were not running that late. Our 4 pm shift actually started scoring at 4:20pm, and there were only 10 teams bowling third shift. An extra 10 minutes to strip and oil(my understanding of redressed) would not have delayed us much, but the lane man told a tournament official the house didn't have the time... I think they had a Sunday evening league they had to accomodate. Make sure you insist on oil if you're bowling third shift at Golden!

more thoughts from a letter I sent to an SBA officer.... I know it sounds like sour grapes, but I have been in the bowling industry for 17 years, and this wasn't my first rodeo... I have bowled in a LOT of tournaments around the country....

I am writing to let you know of my disappointment with the conditions encountered at Golden Lanes during the singles/doubles portion of the Southeast Bowling Association's tournament being held in Greenville, South Carolina. The disappointment is unanimous among everybody on the team, and indeed, the opinions of the conditions would be more likened to disgust than disappointment. I signed up our bowlers for 3rd shift with the SOLE intention of benefitting from the redressing of the lanes after 2nd shift bowling was completed. This was not done at Golden Lanes. The lane man brought out the machine, and ran it for approximately 6-8 feet on each lane.... the front of the machine did not reach the first set of arrows  I was assigned to lane 3 and was able to closely observe the entire process, and to hear the short verbal exchange between the lane man and the tournament official who apparently questioned him as to what he was doing versus what he was supposed to be doing. The lane man eventually said "I don't have time"... to do the lanes as required, and the official walked away. There were 10 teams bowling third shift, or 5 pairs of lanes to be redressed. This would not have required but approximately 10 more minutes than the minimal effort already being expended. We started our shift at approximately 4:20 pm.... only 20 minutes later than our scheduled start time. Such delays are not uncommon in tournaments requiring two or three shifts per day, and. in fact such a small delay as 20 minutes is counted as an on-time start by most.  The lack of lane oil rendered the lanes virtually unplayable. The scores posted reflect the condition of the lanes. One of our bowlers resorted to using his plastic spare ball and it was hooking almost uncontrollably. Other players who had multiple balls available were playing the most shiny and longest/latest reacting piece they had. These were also hooking the entire width of the lane. Myself... I am a down-and-in type player who wound up standing on the 35 board, crossing the fifth arrow with SPEED, and still hooking a PEARL ball past the head pin. I have never played such a line before, except when shooting at a 10-pin spare.

I am aware that, as a bowler in an unfamiliar tournament, I must be ready to adapt to unfamiliar conditions, but I, along with the rest of my teammates, feel the particular condition encountered was so extreme as to effectively eliminate ANYONE who bowled that shift(Sunday, June 20, 4pm) from any chance of prize considerations. Now... if ALL SUBSEQUENT shifts are subjected to the SAME lane condition, then this is no longer a valid argument. If the information on the tournament application pertaining to the redressing of the lanes is incorrect, I certainly would not have signed up our team for 3rd shift. If the tournament officials will not enforce the rules pertaining to this issue, then all scores at Golden Lanes for singles/doubles will reveal the absurdity of the lane conditions encountered by 3rd shift bowlers, and should either be invalidated, offered a chance to re-bowl under the advertised condition, or at least a refund of the singles/doubles portion of their entry fee.

Personally, I will be very hesitant to bowl any SBA sanctioned tournaments in the future, if the tournament officials can't/won't deliver a tournament condition as advertised.  I feel that my teammates will also be suspicious of any tournaments that I recommend, though they have all expressed that the situation was out of my control. Ultimately, it will be the SBA reputation among tournament players that will suffer. I feel this is an issue that will require immediate attention to prevent any further loss of prestige to an organization that depends on tournament players for their existence.

vilecanards,

While I understand your frustration, please do not feel like you are alone.  The conditions at Golden Lanes were not done by the SBA, but by Golden Lanes itself.   Ultimately the house decides what shot to put down and while it was agreed upon in the contract to re-oil for the 3rd shift, their definition of re-oil and ours did not match. They made the decision to short oil the lanes for 3rd squad, without consulting an official before doing so.  However please understand that as a result they are redressing the 3rd shift this way identically throughout the tourney, meaning a short application of head oil for all 3rd shifters.  The shot to begin with is dry at best when freshly oiled for the morning squads and the scores seem to get higher later in the day.  I would know as I am an SBA official assigned to Golden and see a majority of the scores.  The shot is a difficult one though not impossible.  I myself must bowl on this 3rd shift in the coming weeks and will receive the exact same lane conditions you encountered.  As Rob said, they are old wood lanes and they drink oil.  They are much easier to bowl on dry than flooded.

I do apologize that your experience was not what you had hoped for but please do not hold the SBA responsible for this, as this was not what we had planned, wanted or were told to expect.  Please know that this was a learning experience for us as well and that mistakes are to be learned from, which is what we will do.

Sincerely,
Brian Medford
Director

***For those of you who have not bowled as yet, I do recommend bringing light oil equipment or visiting RobSumm's shop for some great deals.  Anyone who would like an advance flyer for the sale at Upstate Pro Shop in the team house can PM me.***

Apology is accepted. BUT... either the SBA runs the tournament to THEIR specifications, or let Golden Lanes hold their own local sweeper tourney. This was not a tournament of the caliber I would expect from the SBA. While I do understand that every member-city eventually gets a turn at hosting the event, both houses were marginal for hosting a large regional event. The wood at Golden appears to have not been resurfaced in MANY years... potholes aplenty, and they still allow INDOOR SMOKING! causing discomfort to many bowlers. I'm a smoker(but did not smoke inside), and I heard lots of complaints from the non-smokers. I think adding information about smoking/non-smoking facility would be a CRUCIAL piece of information for ALL bowlers.

yeah please make the smoking info available, becaues im not bowling in a non smoking house, no way i can go that damn long without a cigarette while im bowling

or make half the house smoking and the other half non smoking, its rediculous that i should have to go outside to smoke, especially if they sell alcohol, that makes me smoke twice as much

i can deal with a smoking lounge no problem, but if i have to go OUTSIDE, then im not bowling there

I'm a local. If you need any help, feel free to message me. Star was the house shot but with just a little more oil in the heads so it would hold up. We played 4th and 5th arrow, not letting the ball get right of 10. One guy next to us played the gutter and struggled all day. I'm bowling singles and dbls today at 4pm.
