Ouch.

I tend to always avoid places that charge by the time block, as it puts you in a hurry to play your games and get out. There's no fun or entertainment in that, unless you have a group of 6 or more there with you. This alone shows that they are trying to cater to the party and recreational people versus those who would be repeat customers.

For me, give me a flat rate for a given number of games (unless it is bowl all you want for a price), or I'm not there. The only exception is if I'm bowling league there and they offer a reduced rate at any time, or they have a very cheap time to go.

I can't attest to the open bowl pricing at Manteca bowl since Bowlero became the owners, but so far they are a massive improvement over the bunch of tools who bought the place from the Ramus family(who built Manteca bowl originally).

For over two years, when you entered the parking lot from the main street, there was a huge hole in the wall were a car ran into the building. The previous owners didn't bother to repair it. The lane machine was a total wreck(you could see dry streaks all the way down the lane), but again, nothing done to fix the situation. The lanes were constantly breaking down and they were scavenging parts from other lanes to repair some of them. The previous owners have no business owning a bowling alley in my opinion. The control stations at the lanes worked on maybe 3 out of 5 lanes at best. The place was really becoming a run down pit, which is a shame because it's truly one of the nicest houses in this area.

Since Bowlmor corp bought it, the house is being repainted, the hole in the wall is fixed, there is a new lane machine. The Twister pins were swapped out for new AMF pins. They have a larger staff and the service is much better and we are told that the pinsetters are all going to be repaired soon. These guys are spending some serious money on the place.

I've heard all the horror stories about Bowlmor here and a couple of other places, but so far it's been impressive. Sure, they turn out the lights for "glow bowl" when leagues aren't on the floor, but who can blame them?

Bowlmor brands (AMF, Brunswick, etc) dominates out here and its not so bad.  Maybe a bit soulless and corporate but sure beats mom and pop places closing and falling apart.  Plus plenty of unsanctioned leagues.  Glow bowl is really only a big problem at the Bowleros and honestly gotten used to it.  Yeah prices might go up but no free lunch.

I am glad to see more positive experiences with AMF/BowlMor.  As stated above, they can come across a bit soulless and they don't necessarily go after bowlers as staff, but they do maintain the centers I have been in better than most mom-and-pop centers I have seen.

All of this comes at a cost.  Our league prices were very high and finding adequate practice time was difficult with lights, but all-in-all it was a good experience bowling at my previous AMF Center.

Around my area the Manager said he is going to start charging 9.00 a game. That is crazy and the lights are always out.

I am sure the $9/game rate is not normal.  Most likely Friday and Saturday nights when practice makes the least sense.

My old center has special unlimited bowling a couple nights a week for less than $15 for the time period and $2.22/game on Tuesday nights.

One thing I will say, some centers can be stingy with oiling of the lanes, but that is more center manager related than AMF related.

Bowlero Milpitas here.  For the most part, they have been an improvement from when they were AMF Mission Lanes.  The only things we have to get used to is the christmas lights on the gutter caps and the large brightly lit signs on the walls.  They said that management requires them to be on at all times.
