stuff i learned after first night of sport league
« on: January 17, 2006, 05:22:12 AM »
first night of sport league at cloverleaf in fremont was very instructive.  pattern seemed a little short and the back end was very strong.  used a track animal untamed first game and suffered with finding the right area to play.  several splits and washouts later, i decided that a strong backend ball was not the way.  game 2 went with a track crunchtime and changed my release to more roll and less hit.  bowled pretty well games 2 and 3.  so, what i learned:
straigher is better, just feed the ball to the naturally strong backend, speed is critical, too fast (washout), too slow (through the nose)
don't miss outside, i only missed once all night, but i watched others around me miss to the outside and never get back to the hole
go straight at spares, early on i missed some left side spares trying to hook the lane.
keep your first ball in the pocket and make your spares.  i know that all of this sounds pretty basic, but watching some of the others in the league, they did not seem to understand this.
the pattern will be there for nine weeks, then change to something else for the last nine weeks.  will report again then.

one of the main reasons i bowl this league is to prepare myself mentally and physically for the nationals.  having spoken with several league members who went to cc a short while ago, i need to change my strategy.  they scored quite well playing pretty much straight up 5 and out.  i tried this monday night and it worked pretty well.  for several years now i have not played this kind of shot due to my 14-15 mph speed, the aggressive equipment i was throwing, and the normal house shots which featured dry outside boards.  i plan on playing this shot for 2 games and then moving inside for the last game.  this hopefully will simulate the shot for the team event and then the expected move inside for doubles and singles.  one other note, the pattern used in this sport league, while a little short, seems to allow these lines to be played effectively.  i know that it is not the nationals pattern, but from an experience standpoint, hopefully it will be good enough.

trios for juniors and quartets for adults.  actually i believe there are openings in the junior league.  call cloverleaf and find out or just come down on monday.  shadows start at 6:20pm.
they also were supposed to put down the sport shot on sunday mornings on lanes 1-6 for practice sessions.  they did not do it this past sunday however.  i showed up to try out the epic battle on the shot and i was told that it was not done.  do not know the reason why but i will speak with the general manager tonight.
