Wood lanes in Arizona or New Mexico?
« on: April 11, 2019, 03:32:45 PM »
Just curious if anyone knows about any bowling alley that still has true wood lanes (edit: on 2nd thought overlay would be fine also) in Arizona or New Mexico?  Not as easy to find as one would assume online.  Be nice for giggles to bowl on wood for a change as haven't done so in decades. Thanks.

You might also consider asking or checking out some private organizations like churches or clubs.  Some had lanes installed decades ago.

None in Cochise County that I am aware of.

Good idea.  Thanks.  Not terribly optimistic but have a feeling if there is a public alley it will be in po dunk New Mexico out in middle of the desert somewhere.

Maybe on a reservation?

The Bowl in Page probably still has wood. Stop and get a burrito at the market in Cameron on your way through.

Morenci Lanes is also a good possibility.

If you want to broaden your bowling experiences do a vacation and stop in St. Charles, MO for cocked hat bowling then hit New England for some candlepin.  There is still plenty of wood lanes in the St. Louis area so you could double dip.

Bravo and thank you!  Absolutely amazed anybody has ever been to both these locations (at least to bowl) as talking boonies for both.  Morenci will work as I can stop there next time I come back from Albuquerque and do the scenic 191 St. John's back way to avoid crappy ass I17 (and charlie foxtrot RV traffic in Payson).  Only reason I would ever go to Page anymore is perhaps to take son to Antelope Canyon.  If get itch to ski in Utah these days I would fly for sure.  That drive was hairy IIRC (lot of natural beauty in that area though).

(edit:  Out here in the west our infrastructure is very new so pretty hard to find old wooden lanes as we never had that many to start with)

There were plenty of places that had wood, but the places that have been able to stay open have upgraded. A lot of smaller towns have had centers close. Second centers in Flagstaff and Kingman, along with Globe, Benson, Winslow, Holbrook, Cave Creek, Cottonwood.  Probably a few others I can't remember.

Thanks for everything.  Yeah only been in AZ for about 15 years so history fuzzy.  Still sad to see the mom and pops go.  Need to see more of the state while I can.

Morenci website says Refinished Lanes.  I used to associate 'refinished' with wood lanes, but I have heard some use that term when they replaced panels on synthetic lanes that had warped or had other issues.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWw9-iygCfM  It IS way out there for sure. I'm quite familiar with a neighboring town, "Clifton" having worked into out and out of for many a year hauling copper, but never got into "Morenci". I'd bet it has many small town wonders. Would be a fun visit to go bowling there just to see the bowling alley and somewhat go back into time a degrees or two. Into Page during fishing adventures @ Lake Powell, but didn't know about any bowling alley there. Might have to take balls & stop in soon.
