Hy-Road Max
« on: March 04, 2021, 10:47:44 AM »
Continuing the long success of the Hy-Road line of bowling balls is the Hy-Road Max. The Hy-Road Max is a mid-performance bowling ball that uses the Inverted Fe2 core. This core is known to produce a higher RG presentation which typically delivers a later reaction as well as a cleaner shape through the front part of the lane. Storm has added the NeX Solid Reactive coverstock around this core. This coverstock offers more reaction down the lane. The makeup of the coverstock helps slow the ball which causes it to hook on medium oiled lanes.

Color: Emerald/Lime
All colors do vary somewhat from the picture shown
Coverstock: NeX Solid Reactive
Core: Inverted Fe² Technology (14#-16#)
Finish: 3000-grit Abralon
RG: 2.57 (for a 15# ball)
Differential: 0.046 (for a 15# ball)
Fragrance: Green Apple
Recommended Lane Condition: Medium Oil

Storm Hy-Road Max

The new Hy-Road ball is called the HyRoad Max.  Great shelf appeal with the bright lime green in color.  Storm added the very strong Nex solid reactive coverstock.  I drilled mine pin down with 5 inch pin.  I also applied Storm Reacta Shine to surface.
For me the Max needs some oil up front, as it rolls pretty early for me.  To be honest it so far has been a little conditional for my roll.  When its on its pretty good, but when its not I just need to choose a different option.  On a side not, bowlers with higher ball speed love this ball as it keeps the ball from going through the breakpoint.
I need to bowl more with the Max and on some longer patterns where it should shine.

Introducing the brand new Storm Hy-Road Maxx! The new Hy-Road Maxx features the NeX Solid Reactive Coverstock that is previously seen in the Proton PhysiX and, Axiom wrapped around the famous Hy-Road Core!

This ball for me is a different ball motion then seen in most Storm balls, it gets through the front part of the lane easily because of the Core and, the Coverstock allows it to read the midlane and, also be very smooth downlane! This ball is very strong still for as slow as it rolls for me for when I need something I can control the backends with.

Storm Hy-Road Max

Core: Inverted Fe2 weight block

Cover: NeX Solid Reactive

I started with my Hy-Road Max on the two different house shots I see most often. One is pretty heavy for house, the other your typical dry house shot.

The Max was a little too weak out of the gates on the heavy shot, too aggressive on the dry one.

I tinkered with cover a bit but still didn't love the reactions I was seeing.

I tossed a couple sport patterns and finally found some success. When I needed a the ball to start earlier and stay controllable, the Max finally lined up.

I think this may just be a bad match up for me. I haven't had much luck with the Hy-Road line (aside from the Hy-Road Pearl)...which seems crazy with all the success of the line.

I have drilled a handful for customers and have had no complaints. Maybe not the best for me but, like most Hy-Roads, this will be a good ball for many different styles.

Hy-Road Max: Thunder Series
Coverstock: NeX Solid reactive
Finish: 3000 Grit Abralon
Core: Symmetrical:  Inverted Fe2 Technology
RG: 2.57 (15lb)
Differential: 0.046 (15lb)
Layout: 4 x 3.75 x 2.25
Tester PAP: 5 1/8 R, 1/2 D
Lane Condition:  Medium – Heavy
Pattern Review: 42’ Typical House Pattern

The Hy-Road Max is proof of why Storm is truly the “Bowlers Company.” With the combination of the Inverted Fe2 Core and NeX Coverstock, the Hy-Road Max delivers from laydown to impact! Let’s take a closer look at this THS review from a straighter, older, thumb-in-the-ball, bowler.

The symmetrical Inverted Fe2 Core rolled quite cleanly off my hand in different lines. I liked that when I played straighter (up 5) this core took its time rev’ing up while retaining a whole lot of energy at the pins. Moving a bit in (up 10), I enjoyed how this core was smooth and predictable with a motion that I could depend on. Further, I could move in deeper (15) and, even with my lower rev rate and higher speed, the Fe2 Core retained its energy and brought a strong impact at the pins with little deflection. I admit that I really like seeing those 10 pin kickers!

The NeX Coverstock was the perfect choice for the Hy-Road Max. I found this solid cover blends smoothly in different conditions and performs well under different situations even after tweaking the cover to 1500 grit. On fresh oil, this cover cleared the heads crisply and still maintained a well-defined motion. I liked how this cover nearly predicted when it was time to make a move as the night went on. In a late night burned up condition, the NeX cover stayed consistent through the lane. I loved its smooth motion even in spotty and frustrating conditions you get from plastic and urethane.

In conclusion, the Hy-Road Max is an excellent choice for bowlers that are down and in, higher speed/low rev and have a little hand to put into their game. This ball is predictable, stable and quite reliable. The Hy-Road Max will keep you in the game. I suggest you keep it in your bag!

The Hyroad Max is the latest ball from Storm that features the Inverted Fe2 weight block that has been so successful over the past 15+ years. Hyroad Max uses the strongest cover (NeX Solid) to date of any ball that shared the Inverted Fe2 weight block. The 3000 grit box finish gets the Max to pick up in the oil with ease. Hy-Road Max has a color combination of emerald and lime, and takes me back to yester-year, and reminds me of the Bolt solid. The Hyroad Max has an Rg of 2.57 and a differential of 0.046 in 15lb balls.

I drilled the Hyroad Max with a 4.5 pin and 4 pin buffer. Comparing the Max to an identically drilled All Road, the Max starts creating traction much sooner and creates more hook in the midlane and through the backend. For a bowling ball with this strong of a cover, it is amazing that it can still continue downlane even though it reads the oil so well. The only ball that comes to mind that created this kind of  motion throughout the entire lane was the Reign of Fire. One thing that I have noticed is that I do need to keep the cover free from oil with my shammy, to keep the consistent move throughout the lane. The Hy-Road Max has been useful on some longer, heavier patterns while keeping my hand up the back of the ball, and can still get through the front of the lane and reduce overall motion when putting my hand in a position to create a little more “spin” on medium pattern volumes.

I like the Hy-Road Max. I was a little nervous to drill it at first because my history with strong covers on high Rg balls hasn’t been the greatest, but the Max works. With my ball speed and rev-rate, the Hy-Road Max will have the right time and place to use it. Thank you for taking the time to read my review of the Hy-Road Max. Bowl up a Storm!
