Storm’s Hy- Road Bowling Ball

This ball is a great addition to the T – Road Line and a perfect placement between the solid and Pearl.

I used a 4 x 3 drilling with the pin slightly above the ring finger. This has given me a clean reactive through the midlane, but it doesn’t overact on the dry.

In the past I have never really done well with the Hy-bird covers. The Sure –Fire was the first that yelled some success.

Using the box finish and the above drilling gave a strong reaction to play near the gutter or inside depending on the condition and surface.

Another top of the line piece of equipment by “The Bowlers’ Company” “Storm”.

The new Hyroad is a great compliment to the troad solid and the pearl.  The hybrid cover really smoothens out the reaction but is still continuous through the midlane.  I layed mine out with a 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 layout with the weight hole through the cg to mellow it out even more for shorter patterns.  I hit the surface with 2000 abralon and this ball is a bench mark ball for me and defiently is one of the first ones out of my bag.  Another winner from our friends in Utah

Got the hy-road drilled this afternoon. Throw it for a couple of games and a burnt up 38 foot house shoot. Ball was amazing through the fried heads and picked up the roll and finished like a freaking mack truck. Carry is unbelievable. The way this ball gets through the heads is so clean it's like a a hot knife through butter. I can not say enough about this phemonal ball that the makers of storm produced.  Every player regardless of what company they throw should pick one of these up. Guarantee if you drill you will fall in love. End of story.

First off great ball carry is better than any other ball i've thrown for years. Have 2 of these balls first one drilled pin in ring cg out with x hole, other a 4x4 at 2000 polished. The combination of these 2 allow me to play any place on the lane with confidence the 4x4 i can play up or swing on fresh soon as i get a little jump change to the other one and boom rignt back on track. This ball mixes the pins up so good it's ammazing had all but giving up on storm but got talked into drilling one of these up and all i can say is wow back to storm.

I feel that I have thrown this ball enough now to post my review.

First a little about me:
Lefty, Stroker, 15-16 mph, medium revs, high tracker, throw 16's, last years book average 228.

I had this ball drilled with the pin below the ring finger, and the cg kicked out to the left, with a small holes a couple inches below my axis.

The reasoning for doing so was to get the Hy-Road to start up a little bit earlier and be a little more smooth through out the lane, rather than a hard snapping back end.

FIRST LANE CONDITION: Old Wood House, 39-40' of Medium Oil, A Pretty Standard House Shot, w/out the super puddle in the middle.  A pretty easy shot.

After throwing the Hy-Road for a few shots, I was getting irritated because it wasn't reacting, and if I did hit the pocket it was deflecting like nothing I had ever seen.  I moved inside a few boards and played more of a slow swing shot, and it started to come to life.

I was suprised at how smooth the ball was on the back ends considering it's polished finish.  The hit was average for a brand new ball, but the reaction impressed me the most.  I figured once I got used to the ball I would see some fine results.

SECOND LANE CONDITION: Same House, Tournament Shot, 39-40' Heavily Oiled, not much room for error.

I bowled in a team tournament that had us bowling 6 games one day and coming back for another 5 the following day.  The alley oiled heavily to ensure there would be oil left for all 6 games on the first day of the tournament.

In practice I did not like my look with the Hy-Road, so I went with the Black Widow Solid instead.  After struggling through games 1-3, I made a switch to the Hy-Road, and went more direct up the boards.  It turned out to be a good move.  I put up scores of 207-266-223 and won the 5th high game, and got 2nd place in King of the Hill.

The ball again moved through the front part of the lane with ease, and made a nice controlled move to the pocket.  The carry was again very nice.

THIRD LANE CONDITION:  Same house, tournament shot, 39-40' of lighter oil, lanes were hooking a lot more.

This was day two of the tournament, and we had to bowl another 5 games.  The lanes were hooking a lot more than the day before, so I started with the Hy-Road.  The ball was getting down the lane okay, but turning really hard on the back.  I have to move pretty deep inside, and wasn't having much luck.  I put up a horrible score in game 1, after leaving 4 weak 7's and missing 3 of them.  Just one of those games.

In game two I decided to stick with the Hy-Road because my Black Widow was checking up way too early and I needed the polished cover of the HR to help get the ball down the lane.  Now I don't know if it was the change of lanes or what, but the ball was now pushing, turning hard, and carrying.  More snappy than the day before due to the lighter oil and fresher back ends.  I shot 243 after throwing the front 6.

As we moved further down to the high end of the house, the lanes tightened up again and I had to migrate left and go straighter.  The ball did everything it did the day before and then some.

I ended the day with 243, 235, 245, 267.  Won more money and now this ball has paid for itself.

FOURTH LANE CONDITION:  Same House, Light Oil League Shot, With FLYING Back ends.  They had just redone the lanes the day before, and wow it was sick!

The Hy-Road was flying.  Every ball was flying.  As soon as it got about 5 feet past the arrows it started to turn.  I had to stick with the HR though, because the BW didn't stand a chance.  I would definitely not recommend this ball for a sick shot like that.  Way too much hook and way too early.  Had to grind out a 183, 197 the first two, before trying something new.  Stand middle, throw left, hard, spin it, do whatever I could to stay on the left side of the head pin.  Shot 222 the final game to salvage what could have been a horrible night.

SURFACE CHANGE
After throwing the Hy-Road on a few different shots, and feeling more comfortable with it, but still not 100% I decided to take off the polish.  I used a scotch brite pad and lightly scuffed the surface until it was dull.  I then took it to my pro shop and had it taken to 4000 grit abralon.

LANE CONDITION:  Synthetics, 39' House Shot, Not a lot of friction on the outsides.  A little tougher, but not hard.

I threw the Hy-Road a few times in practice and thought I had a better look with my Black Widow, so I decided to start with that.  The Widow gave me no recovery to the left, and was coming in light on most shots.  After the 9th frame sitting at 183, I decided to pull out the HR at 4000 grit abralon.

The shot at this house with my type of hand was straight up the 8-10 board as leaking shots left made it hard to recover.  I threw 3 in the 10th with the Hy-Road and decided to stick with it the rest of the night.

Comparing the Hy-Road to the Black Widow both at 4000 grit, the Hy-Road gave me more recovery, and finished better than the BW.  The hit was more solid, and overall the reaction was better.

REVIEWERS NOTE:  The BW is 3 years old and has well over 500 games on it, with one resurface coming last year around January.  It also has the MB in a weak position for smoothing out tougher shots.

What I saw was great push down the lane, with a very nice strong arc back to the pocket.  Carrying power again, very nice.  It seems the more I have thrown this ball the better it carries.  I believe it's because I am throwing it much better now that I trust the reaction more.

2nd game 237.  3rd game XX9/XXXXXX9/X-258 Two 7 pins.  The 7 pin in the 10th cost me over $200.  The 7 pin in the 3rd could have gone either way, but as most bowlers know (or at least remember) is that it rarely ever goes your way.

I haven't put up any huge numbers (267-708) with it yet, but I really like what I see so far.  The best part is that any money I happen to win with it now is all bonus as the ball has already paid for itself.

I'm not a huge Storm fan, as most of the time I don't match up well with their equipment, but this ball is definitely a winner in my book.  I give it a 9.5/10, and will change it to 10/10 if I can shoot 300/800

I tried to be as thorough as possible in my review, so I apologize in advance for the long read and any figjamming that may have occured.

If anyone has any questions about this ball, or any others I have reviewed, please do not hesitate to PM me.

As always, good luck, and good bowling...oh yea, Bowl Up A Storm!

Ball Specs:

15 lbs 4 oz

Top Weight: 2.88 oz

Pin: 2.5 - 3

Environment: Pro-Anvilane Surface with a 36 ft house pattern

The layout I used on Hy-Road was a 4 x 3 pin under ring finger layout. No x-hole (yet). Post drilling weigh-out gave me 7/8th of side weight and 3/8th of thumb weight. Left the ball at OOB finish.

Results: AMAZING!! This ball is the Real thing!

I can't wait to, well, hit the road with the Hy-Road. It's way to early to tell how much I am going to love this ball, but if first impressions are key, then this ball is my new best friend during competition.

For me, the Hy-Road gives me a wide range looks on the lane that I haven't had for a few months. I started off playing my normal 20 (arrows) to  8 (breakpoint 37 feet) and the response off the dry was very controllable. After collecting the data on that, I purposely missed inside and outside of my breakpoint for several shots. While I still paid the penalty for the missed shots, the penalty was not the worse, and at times it didn't look like I missed with the way the ball hit the pocket.

Later on I move to a fresh pair to do some comparisons. But first I want to play a lot straighter than on the previous pair. I moved out to the 5 board and tried my hand in playing 5 to 3, a line very much outside of my comfort zone. Once again, I was amazed at the reaction and hitting power. Usually I have a hard time keeping a ball online long enough when I play straight as I get a lot of bounce off friction too early. The Hy-Road cleared the front of the lane with ease and when it hit friction, it was incredibly smooth, when I was expecting a real angular jump off the spot.

Needless to say, I was more than impressed with this ball. I can't wait to put some mileage on it and get some games on tournament patterns with it. I will post on that in the coming days.

I Finally Drilled up the Hy-Road.  I wished I got this ball sooner.  I am left handed ball speed from 17 to 18 mph.  Rev rate 475+ Pin postion is below my bridge and I did a 4 x 4 1/2

I am very happy I drilled this way.  The HY road gets throught the heads clean and has a very strong arc on the ball.  It is so easy to read on the lanes and it is also very predictable when the ball is going to make the turn.  The oil patteren I used it on is 39 feet and buffed to 41 feet.  When the lanes start breaking down this is the ball you should go to.  It will open up the lane for you.  If you do not have the HY Road you will be left behind.

HY-ROAD Must have ball. Drilled pin below the bridge, which is 5 inches from my pap with cg 4 inches from the pap. No extra hole. This ball compliments the T-Road and T-Road pearl wonderfully.  Used on most house shots and PBA Chameleon and Scorpion Patterns.  I noticed on a typical house pattern when carry sets in the ball doesn’t continue through the back ends as well and I either ball up to the Rapid Fire pearl on Gravity with 2000 abralon and tend to get a better reaction. But the HY-Road is a great priced ball for those who are looking fro a great overall ball and a cover that can be easily adjusted for surfaces.  Tournament bowlers will love to plug this ball in for when they are in between too much or not enough hook.

I picked up the new Hy-Road from my pro shop about a month ago. Drilled it with the pin above and a little right of ring finger. Put the CG straight down from the pin. I wanted length with a strong arc and continuation through the pins. That's just what I got with this drilling. I tested the ball on two different patterns- the THS and Cheetah. On the THS I played 15 out to 7 and the ball came back hard every time. As the lanes broke down I made small moves left, making sure to keep my ball speed up. The Hy-Road faces up to the pocket so nice that the pins don't have a chance. My high series so far is 759 with a 290 game on the THS. The second pattern- the Cheetah, the Hy-Road is pure money on this shot. I played 8 out to 1 and this ball was pocket hunting every shot. Once again as the lanes broke down, I would keep moving left, keeping ball speed up and hitting my break point. My high series on thr cheetah 768 and I've had two high games of 289 with this ball. The Hy-Road is a very readable ball and that makes adjustments easy on the lanes. This ball rolls like a pearl thruogh the heads and then like a solid through the mid lanes and then back to a pearl at the pins.If you love the T-Road family, you need to add this ball to your bag. The Hy-Road will put a smile on your face, just ask the guys & gals from storm nation on the PBA tour.

Got this ball drilled with the pin under and the cg kicked out a bit.
With the out of box surface, this ball devastates the pocket.  It gets far enough down lane and just snaps toward the pocket.  Be careful though, if you can't play up the back of the ball (or have too much side roll), or the lanes have broken down too much, put it away because it absolutely takes off.

Overall a really good ball especially when used on the right conditions.

Specs:

me - slow to medium speed tweener. PAP 4 3/4" right 1/4" up
ball - 15+ lb approx. 3" pin, layout 4 1/2 x 4, finish 4000 abralon

To be honest I originally got this ball with my Virtual just to try it out.  I had no real expectations since I never really matched up well with the T-Road Pearl.  After a few weeks the HY-Road quickly became one of my favorite balls due to it's versatility.  Only real heavy / long oil or very dry stops this ball.  I would describe this ball's motion as strong arc, but for a ball with that description the Hy-Road gets through the heads with ease.

The condition that this ball thrives on is anything from a short to medium pattern (35-40 ft) where the shot has been worn it a bit, but not burnt.  I have been using the HY-Road as a more angular ball after either my T-Road Solid or Attitude Shift no longer can get the best angle of entry to the pocket.  Medium oil volume is the Hy-Road's best bet, but it'll work fine on med-heavy or med-light as well.

As far as PBA patterns are concerned the HY-Road matches best for me on Viper, and it is a good later shift ball for Chameleon as well.  I prefer rollier balls for Cheetah but I have seen some who like to bank it a bit on Cheetah succeed with the HY-Road as well.

Just got mine and hated it the first day at OOB finish.  Don't think I've ever thrown a ball more over-under in my life.  I took the surface to 4000 and no better, took it down to 2000 and better but still too many 2-10's for me.  Took it down to 1000 and now the ball is sweet!  Hits like a ton o' bricks and in limited action tripped two 10's in a way I hadn't seen before.  Sure seems like a winner to me now.  Gets down down the lane well with no jerk reaction and a very strong, continous roll and hard hit.

Got this ball at the High Roller.  I wasn't expecting much because I generally don't like high rg stuff, especially in pearl or hybrid.  Decided since it was a freebe I would experiment.  I put a 2x2 layout on it which I have used with great success on very slick patterns with clean back ends. This ball absolutely shocked me how good it matched up with this layout.  Used it on a fresh Scorpion pattern in an old anvil lane house, and it was the only ball I had that would stand up and get to the pocket without pointing too much.  Practiced with it again on a totally trashed house shot the next day, and gave me great hit going 20 out to 12.  My Momentum Swing hit just as good, but I couldn't force it through the mids without moving every 3rd shot.  I could over swing the Hyroad, and got no burn or over reaction, just great continuation.  If I hugged the oil a bit, it still stood up for great hit.

I think this ball and layout might be great for me on the Nationals pattern next month.

great ball! 5 inch pin to pap pin below bridge. my favorite drill.  this ball is a little bit stronger then i expected. i used this ball on sport shot and a heavier house shot and it is a very controllable and readable ball. very responsive to surface changes and i am going to but another one and drill it a little weaker. i have tried at 1000 sanded and 1000 polish and either way its a great ball but when sanded its very strong. polished it is still pretty smooth it never gets that really big snap which suprised me. this is deffinatly a winner from storm

I own over 40 different STORM bowling balls. My personal favorites include the Spit Fire, Gravity Shift, and Passion. I recently purchased a Hy-Road mainly because of the incredible reviews this ball has received and because it has made an appearance on almost every PBA telecast a Storm bowler has been on. If it is good enough for Norm Duke, Pete Weber, Mike Fagan, Ryan Page, Ryan Shafer and Patrick Allen to use, it is good enough for me. If you don't believe that, take a look at the 2009 Dick Weber tournament. At one point or another, EVERY bowler was using this ball.

I am a 220 average bowler. I drilled my Hy-Road 4x4.

This ball gets good length but does not over react off the dry. It has a nice controllable ARC to the pocket.

The Hy-Road hits like a truck and it has now become my new FAVORITE ball! Nice job Storm. This ball is the best ever!!!!!!!

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER GIVEN A REVIEW! THIS BALL DESERVES IT!!!
