What can I say about the Hy-Road?  For one, it is awesome, probably one of my favorite all time balls. You get both worlds of the T-Road and T-road pearl in one ball. The hybrid coverstock mated to the inverted Fe² Ionized Coreâ„¢ makes for awesome readable ball reaction. I often find myself using the ball as a way of getting an initial read of a lane so that i know where to play. The ball has excellent roll in the end of the reaction and very rarely leaves corner 10 pin's. It amazes even more when scuffed with a scotch brite pad just a bit to get some more reaction out of it. Overall and excellent well made and designed ball!

My god. What a ball this is!! The hybrid cover had the best of both worlds. Solid for the heavier oil patterns and pearl for the lighter oil patterns. The pin is directly above the brdige and the cg is kicked off the mid line about an inch and directly below the ring. The ball gives the bowler so much confidence when it's in their hand. The motion of the ball in the mid lane is the best in my bag. If you want high scores this is the ball. Hands down.

HANDS DOWN the best ball in my bag. Ball is the most versatile ball I have ever thrown with in my career. The ball has such a smooth roll that is very strong and hits the pocket very hard. I get very good carry on light hits and the controllable ball motion that the Hy-road delivers makes this my benchmark in my arsenal. no questions asked this is my favorite ball.

This ball is the most versatile ball in bag. Pin is drilled above ring finger. It rolls smooth through the heads and has a continuous smooth reaction in the backs. Perfect ball for when the lanes start to break down and you need a predictable ball. I recommend this ball for anyone beginner or pro.

The Hy-Road is definately a great ball that everyone needs to have in their arsenal.  This ball is a very even rolling ball that does not over react or die out.  When the lanes start to get a little drier, i switch from my Virtual Energy to the Hy-Road to get the ball through the heads, go longer, and conserve energy to hook on the back end.  I bowl with the William Paterson bowling team, sponsored by storm, and this ball has matched up very well on all of the sport shots that we have bowled on already.  I have the pin above and in between the fingers with the CG kicked out a little.

I wasn't looking for any reaction in particular when I got this ball. What I ended up with, is a bench mark ball. This is the first ball out of my bag everywhere. This ball gives me excellent length and controlled agression off the spot. The typical league shot has no chance! It manages friction very well! If you haven't got it, go get it!

Style: See Profile

Pin to CG Distance - 3"
Topweight - 2.8 oz

Layout:

What I like to call the "hand friendly" layout, pin about 4" from the PAP with the MB under the thumb. Small weighthole on the PAP to take out a little side weight.

Reaction:

Versatile depending on hand position. More up the back provides a earlier and smoother reaction and more on the side is a longer, stronger reaction.

Comments:

I have to admit, I'm a huge fan of hybrid coverstocks.  Two of my favorite balls were the Epic Saga and Silver Streak SE from Roto Grip.  I shot a 300 with the Silver Streak SE and a 298 with the Epic Saga.  I also have good experience with this core due to the fact that I had some success with the T-Road Pearl.  I decided to drill a Hy-Road with the same layout as my T-Road Pearl looking for a benchmark ball that I can use on almost anything.  This ball did not disappoint, it reads the midlane more like the T-Road Solid and the look on the backend is more like the T-Road Pearl.  Compared to the T-Road Pearl, it reads the lane sooner and is a liitle smoother off the dry.  It's extremely versatile, and I've used it anywhere from 1st arrow to nearly 4th arrow without any loss in carry.  The ball hits very well and keeps the pins lower, rather than sending them flying like my VG does.

While the ball is versatile and can be used to play further inside, this ball is at it's best when I'm playing outside angles.  A great deal of that has to do with the layout and the fact that outside lines are my A game.  I shot a 268 with it on the Cheetah pattern in my PBA league a couple of weeks ago.  I've used this ball on the Viper, Cheetah, Scorpion and one of the Kegel Patterns.  For me with this layout, this ball works the best on the shorter fresh patterns and on the longer patterns once they've broken down a little bit.  If I wanted to use it on the fresh on some of the longer patterns, I probably would have to take the surface down to 2000 or 4000 without polish.

In my honest opinion, this ball is "the" benchmark ball right now in the Storm lineup.  This ball can be used by any style of bowler, from a down and in stroker looking for more length and backend than a solid, but earlier read than a pearl to a boomer looking for a little more control downlane.  I'm thinking about drilling a second one with a length layout to complement the first.  This ball is a great "step down" ball from the Virtual Gravity as well.  If you don't have a Hy-Road yet, go get one or prepare to get beat by someone who does.

Drill Pattern: Stacked Leverage

P O O

For the THS, this is the best ball I've thrown from Storm.  It does exactly what they claim it's supposed to do, keep the pins low.  With that, you get better overall carry.  The Hybrid coverstock is great, you get the mid-lane along with a consistent backend reaction.  It hits like no other Storm ball I've ever owned, rolls easy, and takes coverstock adjustments well.  If you want a benchmark ball, this is the one.

Drilled Two Hi Roads . First one pin 4, mb aprox 4 ,extra hole 5 from center of grip ,surface 2000 . Ball clears heads VERY EASY, lays off on mids, strong arch to the pocket . Ball always reads spot down lane ,not over under . Worked well on US OPEN pattern . Love the ball . Second one pin 5 1/2, mb 5 ,no extra hole . surface 1500 shiney .Ball clears heads easy ,strong mid lane, strong back end . Ball reads spot hard , hits very well . Good on most patterns . This ball from storm is a keeper !!!

Layed this ball out 4 3/4 X 4 3/4 pin down with no weight hole. Puts the pin under my middle finger. Tried this ball at 1000, 2000, 4000, 2000 with step 2 (no polish). On some shorter patterns this is my go to ball. Clean threw the fronts with a strong arcy backend. Great to square up with. Has some trouble when the patterns get longer. It tends to be speed sensitive on those longer patterns. Not a good ball to try to wheel the lane with (pin down duh).

Words of advise. Limiting your self to just one company is never smart. Get proven balls out on the market. Global, Storm inc, Ebonite international, er what ever it may be.

Ever ate an unshelled Pistachio nut?  Not having to unshell the nut before eating the nut is just like throwing the Hyroad.

LANE CONDITION

Length:

Volume: Heavy in middle

Type (THS, Sport Pattern etc): modified THS

COMMENTS

Likes: This ball drillled pin under bridge reads the midlane well with a very strong arc on the back.  Pin carry is excellent.  This ball can be thrown on many different conditions with excellent results.  One of the most versatile balls I have ever thrown.  Such a good ball, that I am considering buying a couple more and hanging on to them.

Dislikes:  None at all.

Layout: 4.5'' from PAP (puts pin over ring)

Surface: 2000 abralon

Strengths: left of 2nd arrow

Weaknesses: outside angles, better options with other pieces

Used Successfully: on Sport/PBA patterns which have transitioned, house shots

Not Useful: on patterns which require play outside of 10

The Hyroad was touted by most as a perfect benchmark ball, but I have to disagree. There is no doubt the ball serves its purpose well, but I think it has too much length and backend motion to be considered a benchmark piece. Maybe with a pin down layout and a hole this could fit into that category. For me, the Hyroad fits between the Reign and Spitfire in the lengthwise/downlane motion window. The Reign (box finish) is longer and even more angular, while the Spitfire (at 2000) is earlier and smoother overall. All three show about the same overall hook potential, give or take a couple boards on different patterns. I tend to go to the Hyroad when I need to open the lane up, but also want to be sure the ball reads the mids, as the Reign sometimes fails to read in carrydown. On house shots this ball is a monster, as it reads hard enough off the spot to carry, but also is controllable enough to avoid over/under reactions. The surface is also very tuneable, and reads linearly with appropiate changes in grit. More surface equals an earlier and smoother move, while less surface equals length and pop at the breakpoint. I believe one could have an arsenal of just Hyroads and get by on most patterns, except maybe Shark. The core lets this ball float through the front very well, even with light surface prep.
