Description:  Take a Joy Ride down the lane with this Storm mid-performance bowling ball.  Not everyone needs a hard hooking ball, especially on drier lane conditions.  The Storm Joy Ride takes the highly polished pearl Reactor coverstock and combines it with the Cruiser core to create a ball that is low friction and little flare.  This helps the bowler with consistency and control while giving this ball a smooth Joy Ride down the lane.

Storm Joy Ride Ball Review by PJ Haggerty

The new Joy Ride from Storm is a ball that has filled a nice gap in our line.  When the lanes are toasty, the strong balls aren’t storing enough energy, and you need something to still go through the pins with ease, the Joy Ride provides that need.  I’ve mainly seen extremely high rev players and elderly folks use this ball.  I think the Joy Ride brings a great price point for the performance, especially for the folks not looking to break the bank.

As I’ve said in previous reviews, I like to drill the weaker, cleaner balls a lot stronger to make sure they flare enough.  I drilled my Joy Ride with a layout of 3 x 3 with a hole on my axis.  This provides a very smooth and arc type motion that I can use when I want to trap my reaction and not cover a lot of boards, or when the lanes are extremely dry.

I’d also recommend putting a touch of surface on the Joy Ride.   By spinner, I used a 2000 pad with some water, just to make sure the ball reads the body of the lane and gives it a bit of earlier roll.

If you are missing that cleaner ball for drier lanes, you like to play straighter, or looking for great price point, the Joy Ride is a great choice.

Layout: 65 x 4.5 x 35 - box finish.

I drilled up the Joy Ride to give me something that still has some pop but is not quite a low level reactive like the Tropical Breezes or urethane like the Super Natural. The Joy Ride does need some friction to get it to start up, but it works for me when the lanes are toasted and it is hard to get stronger pearls like the Sky Rocket to push down lane enough to conserve hitting power. This should also be a great ball for very slow ball speeds and for senior players who do not need high end reactives to still compete.

The Joy Ride, I got this ball to help my arsenal. My equipment are mostly aggressive. So I drilled up the Joy Ride, for something weaker. Man what a ball, drilled it 75x5x45 dual angle for THS. Playing most of the oil and the ball was so smooth thru the heads and at the breakpoint just a smooth arc. This ball is first out the bag, move a little right play straighter didn't over react when got to dry to soon. Everyone need this in their bag. GREAT BALL. Oh the smell is delicious! Thanks Storm.

Orientation:  Right Handed
Rev Rate:  375 RPM
Speed:  16-17 MPH
PAP:  4 5/8 straight across

Location:  Enterprise Park Lanes, Springfield MO
Pattern:  High Volume THS
Layout:  60, 4 3/4, 70

The Joy Ride builds on the success of the original Ride. It’s everything you would expect from a pearl version of the Ride.  It’s super clean through the front and tries to backend a little more than the Ride, but with the same smooth motion you expect from the Ride series Cruiser core.  Some Light oil balls have a tendency to skate too much in the oil and over react when they finally do read the friction.  That’s not a problem with the Joy Ride.  It does clear even the driest heads with ease, but has enough controlled backend for almost any broken down lane pattern.  Along with the Ride, the Joy Ride is the standard for light or short oil patterns.

Joy Ride Review:
Layout:      Over the label pin up and center of grip line
Surface:    Box condition
Lane condition:   41ft THS with ICE oil using the latest FLEX machine and older HPL lanes.

Testing results:    Since the center switch the cleaner from 7:1 ratio to 4:1 ratio, the track area and towards the gutter on both sides have instant and early hook. The Loco and Loco Pearl were actually a little too strong for the first game without changing a lot with hand positions or what part of the lane I was playing. So, I drilled up a Joy Ride label and pin up, and the ball is amazing on drier lanes and shorter patterns. I like the ball transition down lane better the Loco Pearl, its smoother and hits harder, but more me, it reads the lane better than the Ride did. I love this ball on fresh wet/dry and when I need to play straight, this ball is very predictable and I am confident when I use it.

The Joy Ride features a lower friction, highly polished pearl Reactorâ„¢ material which limits traction between the ball and the lane, perfect for those looking to conquer even the most hooking conditions. And the new Cruiserâ„¢ core produces a modest amount of flare potential to help control your ball path as well. They work hand in hand to help ensure that the Joy Ride gives you the smoothest ride possible down the lane.

I drilled my Joy Ride with a 3 x 5 layout with a hole on my axis. The Joy Ride allows me to play straighter angles on shorter oil patterns and drier lane conditions. I am very happy on where this fits in my arsenal. The original Ride is extremely clean with a smooth motion down lane. The new Joy Ride maintains that length, but with a stronger sharper angle. I would say that this ball could be best described as a “baby Sky Rocket”.

The Cruiser core seems to be pretty versatile, so unless you are extremely rev-dominant, I would not be afraid to drill it strong. If you have slower ball speed, high rev rate, or just like to play in the drier part of the lane, the Joy Ride might be the perfect fit for you.

LANE CONDITION

Length: Short patterns

Volume: lower volumes

Type (THS, Sport Pattern etc): Various assortment of patterns

The Joy Ride is the newest release in Storm’s Hot Line.  The Joy Ride has the same Cruiser Core as the Ride.  The difference is that the Cruiser Core is surrounded by the Reactor Pearl Reactive coverstock in the Joy Ride.  The Reactor Pearl allows the Joy Ride to skate down the lane and provide a sweet continuous motion through the pins.

The Joy Ride layout is pin under with cg kicked out at 2 inches from center line with a hole on the mid line at 6 inches for the dual angle people (45 X 5 ½ X 80).  My coordinates are PAP 5 5/8 by ¾, Rev Rate around 300, more up the back release and my balls speed is around 15 mph.  I like to go straighter if possible.  The Joy Ride provides a smooth continuous motion even on the driest of lane patterns.  The Joy Ride and also the Ride are perfect pieces for the Shorter Sports/ animal patterns.  Especially the Joy Ride, the pearl cover saves more energy than the Ride’s Hybrid cover so that means that the Joy Ride has a little more left for the backend.  Also for bowlers that like to go straighter and more up the dry the Joy Ride will allow you to do so longer.  Whereas the Ride would have a tendency to roll a touch too soon and be too smooth on the backend.  The Joy Ride will be a joy to have in your bowling bag whether you’re a tournament player, League player or a recreational player.

Right Handed
Ball weight:  15
Rev Rate:  378
Ball Speed:  18.2
Axis Tilt:  7
Axis Rotation:  45*
PAP:  3 3/4 horizontal, 7/8 up
Layout:  60 x 5 ½ x 40

I drilled the Joy Ride for sport pattern burn.  I wanted something that, when the middle is completely gone, and I need to just send the ball right because I know it will make the corner.  I am not disappointed!

I’ve used the Joy Ride on some beat up house patterns, meaning one league, plus a full day of open play.  I am thoroughly impressed.  This ball gets through the fronts with no problem, does not need volume to get down the lane, and still makes a great move to the hole.  I’ve actually pulled this one out towards the end of a league night and there is still plenty of volume in the middle to make this one skate.  I really had to slow my speed down, just to get it into a roll.  This ball needs friction and should be a great ball for the burn.

The Joy Ride may be the first true dry-lane ball that performs as advertised and still carries.  I’m actually looking forward to sport pattern burn or some old wood lanes because I believe this ball is going to be my answer to end-of-the-block games.

The Joy Ride contributes another ball reaction to Storm's Hot line of bowling balls by adding a stronger coverstock to the conservative Cruiser core.  Whereas the original Ride was excellent for controlling shorter oil patterns and ligher oil volumes, the Joy Ride brings more backend reaction to the mix.  I drilled my Joy Ride 45 X 4” by 35 to maximize the flare potential of the core.  The Joy Ride is excellent on lighter to medium oil patterns.  It completely ignores the heads, has a slight midlane read, and gives a crisp backend motion with plenty of entry angle into the pindeck.  This ball feasts upon broken down or second shift lane conditions.

In comparison to a few other recent releases, the Joy Ride hooks 4-5 boards less than an IQ Tour 30, but is 3-4 boards stronger than the original Ride, all 3 with the same drill pattern.

The Joyride is the second ball released with the Cruiser Core, only this time, with Reactor pearl cover. The Joyride looks great with a platinum/bronze pearl color scheme, and has a caramel pecan scent. The Rg of 2.58 and low differential of 0.021 in 15lb balls gives bowlers a controlled amount of flare, better suited for drier lane conditions. I drilled my Joyride with pin over ring, and cg on grip line, which comes out to a 5x5x2.5 layout.

Comparing the Joyride to Ride(drilled 4.5x5x2.5), the Joyride covers about the same amount of boards, and works on about the same amount of oil, but goes about it a little differently. Standing at the same spot on the approach, I have to move my eyes a board or so in from what I was targeting with Ride. The Joyride goes straighter to the same spot as the Ride, and then changes direction harder, and has a slighter sharper move back to the pocket. To make the Ride and Joyride gapped a bit more, I have since changed the surface on Ride to 4000 abralon. With this adjustment, I can start off on the fresh lighter volume house shot of our center, and blend the pattern with Ride, and then go to Joyride when it breaks down a little, and I want to create a little more angle through the back part of the lane.

The Joyride seems to have an ever so slight advantage when getting into third and fourth arrow on really dried up conditions. The slightly stronger move off the spot seems to create a better angle through the pins for a slightly higher carry percentage. If you haven’t tried the Ride yet, then you really don’t want to miss out on the Joyride, if you are looking for a drier condition ball, that still has some board coverage. The Joyride also bridges the large gap between the Tropical Breeze and the recently discontinued Punch Out. For me personally, the Joyride is the perfect drier condition ball, as the Tropical Breeze went a touch too straight for most patterns I see, and my Punch Out was better suited for medium conditions, than it was for drier lanes.

Thank you for taking a moment and reading my review of the Storm Joyride. As always, bowl up a Storm!

The Joy Ride is a ball I have been wanting for quite a while.  I was looking for something super clean through the front to use on drier patterns when I have to play deep inside angles.  My previous go to ball for when the lanes dry out was my Frantic.  I loved the Frantic, but at times it would still struggle to get through the front.  Anything I had weaker than the Frantic seemed to go 60 feet.
The joy Ride has fit perfect in my arsenal.  When my Sky rocket is hooking too much I can go to the Joy ride to get extra length, but not worry about it going 60 feet.
The joy ride will be great when patterns break down and you have to create angle deep inside.

The Joy Ride is full of surprises. There is nothing low performance about this lower end priced ball.

Its really amazing how smooth it is and very controllable. For me in league play this is a pretty good

this is a pretty good option for game two. When you start to see transition but they haven't quite opened

up enough yet to allow the move left, this ball blends the over under and can keep me on the right side of

the lane longer.

This isn't my go to ball for a long skid snap reaction but a very useful tool on lighter patterns that need a earlier smoother roll.

If your house shot is on the dryer side or you see a lot of over under reactions in the transitions this is a great option for your bag.
