Omega Crux
« on: March 06, 2020, 09:03:20 AM »
Storm has brought back the Catalyst Core in the Storm Omega Crux high performance bowling ball. This popular core has been known for its unmatched power, increased entry angle, as well as allowing more room for drilling error due to dynamic asymmetrical design and vertical cavity technology. The GI-20 Pearl coverstock used in this ball stands for Game Improvement 2020. This special coverstock was specifically designed to improve performance in the modern difficult bowling environment. The GI-20 Pearl Reactive coverstock used on the Omega Crux is best used on heavier oil conditions and has a really good skid, hook and then roll reaction. This ball can recover for almost anyplace on the lane.

Because of the strong Core in the Crux (Catalyst core) and the aggressive cover (GI-20) i wanted to make sure i picked a layout that ensured plenty of continuation downlane. I have 17mph ball speed at the camera, 425-450 rev rate, average axis tilt, but minimal axis rotation. This means i come up the back of the ball which causes the ball to want to read the lanes a little early. I chose a pin down 55 x 4.5 x 70 (roughly 4.5 x 5 x 4.5 in the Vector layout system) layout. Even though this is a pearl ball, it doesn’t act like a pearl. It reads the middle part of the lane nicely and produces a strong smooth arc on the backend. It is very predictable, controllable, and won’t exaggerate your mistakes. Misses inside hold but still finish on the backend because the ball picks up a heavy roll. Misses outside recover really well and don’t ricochet off the dry. The pearl cover with the 3000 grit finish has enough traction in the middle and enough skid in the heads to conserve tons of energy and split the 8-9 correctly. It doesn’t create weird angles that leave you weird splits. Shots that you don’t think will carry surprise you and strike. Aside from the slickest or driest conditions, this ball will work for mostly everyone. My Pro Motion is always the first ball out of my bag. The Omega Crux is stronger than the Pro Motion. It is a little cleaner through the heads but more continuous on the back than my Phaze II. #Stormnation

Storm Omega Crux

55 x 4.75 x 20

I was very excited when I saw a new Crux ball was being released!  I was a big Alpha Crux fan so my expectation was this ball would be a good one!  Whenever that white pigment is used in the cover the balls tend to torque a little harder a little sooner on the Lane which is exactly what I experienced with mine.  I chose a stronger layout to compliment what the ball naturally wants to do.  It does get through the first 15-20 feet very well, stands up in the mid-lane and is very smooth an controllable down lane.  This is a ball I will use on fresh quite often and is definitely intended for heavy and medium volume patterns.  Speed dominant players should like this one!

Storm Omega Crux

Cover: Gi-20 Pearl Reactive

Core: Catalyst Core

I was pretty excited about the Omega Crux. I didn't get the best look with the Crux Prime, mainly because I never see enough oil to let the ball do what it was intended to do. The Omega is much more playable for me. While it is still strong, it gets downlane enough to be able to use on a heavier house shot. Not a ball that I will be able to use all night during a 3 game-5 person league, but something I can start with when I need a little more to fight through the heavier oil (the 2 houses I bowl league in have had pretty heavy shots this season).

I tend to score better with pearls than solids (mostly mental) so having a big sanded pearl to add to the arsenal has been great.

This one will be the strongest ball I will have in my league arsenal and will be a ball down from my UFO in my tournament bag.

Layout: 70 x 4 ½ x 40

The Omega Crux is a beast in the back part of the lane! I did not expect the huge amount of midlane and back end traction that this ball possesses. Even though it is a pearl coverstock, do not let that scare you – this ball handles oil with ease. In fact, it was just as strong as the UFO for me. The pearl coverstock does lend itself to have more angularity than your normal heavy oil ball, however. As long as you have some oil in the fronts and midlane, this ball will perform.

Storm Omega Crux Ball Review by PJ Haggerty

The newest addition to the Premier line at Storm is the Omega Crux.  The Omega Crux continues to use the Catalyst core which has been extremely successful in the Crux line, but the cover offers the GI-20 version which provides a pearl coverstock to create length and a sharper response time down lane.  I’m seeing a ton of Omega’s go down the lane in league and tournaments.  It’s been impressive to watch so far.

I’ve drilled one Omega and love it.  I drilled it with the pin above my middle finger and the mass bias approximately three inches to the right of my thumb.  The numbers come out to: 5.5 x 4 x 45.  This Omega is a ball I can use on heavier volume conditions and on the ‘fresh’ of many patterns.  I call the Omega my “big ball” in my bag because it rolls heavy but is still clean and provides a slow-to-medium response time.

If you’re looking for a “big ball” replacement and need something for fresh patterns that has the newest technology from our experts in Utah, go drill an Omega Crux.

Ball Specs:
Storm Omega Crux
Cover stock Pearl Reactive
Asymmetric Catalyst Core
Finish grit 3000
Layout 45 x 4.5 x 40

Bowler Specs:
Right Hand. PAP 5” Over 1/2 up
Rev Rate 300. Tilt 20. Rotation 50.
Speed at release 17

Review:
The new Omega Crux is very different than the Crux Prime. The Prime rolls super early and has a hook set type motion. This new Omega Crux goes a bit further but still grabs in oil due to the 3000 sanded strong cover. The Omega revs up and finishes strong on the back end. The Omega Crux has a lot of hook potential but shapes more like a shined ball. It seems to me there are distinct differences in the Crux family of balls. The ball finish looks rougher than the 3000 stated to me and does not lane shine easily. My Omega is low maintenance, I just use a good Storm ball cleaner or wipe and I’m good to go. I am very happy with the hit and motion of this ball. The Omega will not quit on the back. I have been getting away with good carry on some not so great shots. This ball works well on house shots as well as flatter patterns. The Omega is very versatile. This ball fits nicely between my UFO and All Road in total hook. The Omega has a bit more skid and flip than my UFO.
This ball is a bit of a sleeper in my shop but the ones we have drilled have had rave reviews by our bowlers. We had a Matchmaker planned but had to postpone due to the Virus but I know we will be selling a lot of these when we get back on the lanes.
Stay Safe!

Summary:
The Omega is nothing like the Prime in ball motion.
The Ball has a very strong back end move and hit.
The Omega works well on a wide range of conditions.
This is another fun ball to roll!

Omega Crux

RG / Diff: 2.54 / .050

Ball Specs: 3000 grit - GI-20 Pearl Reactive / Catalyst Core

Layout: 65 x 3 1/2 x 50

Results: This was much stronger then what my prior Cruxes. I actually moved right to about 30 and look at the bottom of the 4 pin to make the ball stay in the pocket. The ball works well on a THS with SPL roll a little early on HPL and less blended THS. Apollo Strong!!! I used this ball more of the 40ft Kegel flex pattern and found the ball roll better inside of the track area and where the oil was heavier and longer. This ball will suit those players that bowl on the harder lane surfaces like SPL, Pro-lane and Anvilane on the longer house patterns and needs a set up from the IQ Tour or Phaze II.

Bowlers Info: RH tweener, PAP 4-1/2 x 7/8 up, 365 RPM, 17* of Axis tilt, 60* of Axis Rotation

Ball Layout: 30 x 5 x 45

Finish: Wet 4000 grit

Surprise surprise surprise!!  Lots of surprises came when I threw this newest addition to the Storm arsenal  As I am more rev dominant, I tend to drill most of my assymetrics with a longer pin layout. For this one, I went with a 30 x 5 x 45 which put the pin above my middle finger and PSA kicked pretty far right.  What I was looking for was a clean reaction that would turn up a bit sooner. 1st surprise, this ball HOOKS!!  Whoa!  After throwing a game on it, I decided to hit it with 4000 wet surface and that did the trick! Where this ball will excel for me is when there is a decent amount of oil in the mids where I can still open up the lane a bit.  The pearl maintains the ball’s energy and this thing hits hard, seems like heavier rolling piece.  I did try adding polish and didn’t like the reaction I was seeing so took it back to the 4000 wet and really like this motion!  I was able to move in pretty deep and open up the lane so long as I kept my hand on the side of the ball, really going to enjoy this one!

If you’re in need of a bigger piece that can open up the lane without losing its energy early since it is a pearl, then give this one a shot and start bowling up a Storm!

I loved the almost every ball in the Crux family, so I drilled the Omega Crux the first chance I got. I put a stronger layout (50x4.25x30) on my Omega because I wanted to accentuate what the ball was designed to do. Even with the stronger layout and duller box finish it skids easily through the front part of the lane. Even though it is clean in the front, the Omega doesn’t have a ton of backend shape. It is more of a controllable mid-lane shape. I see the Omega Crux being great on fresh on medium patterns. I can see why guys on tour have fallen in love with this ball.

BALL / BOWLER SPECS

Layout: 55x4.75x55

Surface: factory surface (500/3000 Abralon)

PAP: 4-1/2 R, 1-3/8 U

Rev Rate: 500rpm

Speed: 20mph off hand

Conditions: THS, on both wood and synethetic lanes

COMMENTS

Storm's new Omega Crux subverts a couple of norms in the bowling ball market - it's a pearl cover, but still provides a lot of traction in oil AND it comes sanded from the factory at 500/3000 Abralon. It looks weird on a spec sheet, but take this ball to the lanes and it doesn't disappoint! It's got a new cover formula (GI-20 Pearl) paired with the asymmetric Catalyst core from the rest of the Crux series. Storm has billed this cover formula as their strongest ever, and even in pearl form this ball can hang with stuff like my PhysiX in terms of created friction on the lane.

So, what does this sanded pearl asymmetric package give you? Possibly the most throwable big asym to ever come out of Brigham City. It definitely feels controlled and rolly downlane (like the Alpha Crux), but also brings some of the energy retention and downlane responsiveness of the PhysiX to the equation. How it manages this is beyond me, but even just in the few weeks since I've drilled it the Omega has given me a great ball reaction when other bowlers around me are struggling to put up a double on multiple occasions. Make no mistake - this ball will eat through some oil. Give it that oil though... and it'll find a home VERY quickly at the top of your bag!

The Omega Crux is the 5th in the Crux line, all featuring the Catalyst core, but is the first to feature the GI-20 pearl cover, which comes factory sanded at 3000 grit.  The Omega feels like a throwback to the original Crux, and the reaction is what made the original so popular.  There’s traction, but not too much, a strong move down lane, but not too strong, and a very good control to power balance.  This means the Omega was built for versatility, both on the lanes, and in the hands of several different styles of bowlers.  There’s enough backend punch and hook to help higher speed or lower rev bowlers create an effective shape, but it’s not too strong or angular for slower speed or heavier hands.  It feels like a smoother and more controllable PhysiX, it has a strong and continuous motion, but it’s not quite as aggressive or “angry” as the PhysiX.  The Omega will do well both on house shots and on sport patterns for a wide variety of bowlers.

Ball Specs:
Storm Omega Crux
3000 GI-20â„¢ Pearl Reactive
Weight Block: Catalystâ„¢ Core (Asymmetrical)
Color: White/Copper/Graphite

Review:
We are loving this addition to the Crux line. Usually sanded pearls don’t hold well for either of us on a typical house shot but this new addition is very surprising. Compared to the Alpha Crux this ball goes a little longer (as you would expect from a pearl cover) with a slightly sharper entry angle into pocket. It is important to note that the entry angle differs from your typical pearl in that it is not too “hockey stick” like in shape. We feel this is a perfect mix for people who like pearl and hybrid covers and need something to fit that gap. We hosted a matchmaker a few weeks ago and people were loving the shape down lane. It is a unique shape out of box and one ball in particular that stands out as a monster pearl. This is one pearl that you will not be afraid to use if there is some oil out there.

Wood Lanes
House Shot

The Omega Crux is the perfect compliment to the Crux Prime! These 2 balls together create a fabulous 1-2 punch for any bowler. With the Omega having the GI-20 Pearl Reactive Coverstock paired with the Catalyst Core you get a similar motion down lane with the Omega on transition as you do with the Crux Prime on fresh! The Omega Crux is an Asymmetrical must have in everyones arsenal!

The newest "Crux" line of bowling balls, with the famous Catalyst core, will result in success everytime.

This ball is not going to disappoint either. The new Omega Crux has a 3000-Grit finish with a pearl coverstock. I decided to drill this ball pin below the bridge, which is 2.5 pin-pap. This ball reads the midlane great. It's not to early, and it's not to clean either. I view this ball as a great step down to the Gravity Evolve, and a step above the Phase II. This ball will be used on multiple different shots, and lane conditions.

The Omega Crux should be a must have in your bag!

Orientation:  Right Handed
Rev Rate:  400 RPM
Speed:  16-17 MPH
PAP:  4 ½ over and ½ up

Location:  Enterprise Park Lanes, Springfield MO
Pattern:  High Volume THS
VLS Layout:  5 x 4 x 4 5/8

I loved my Crux Prime, but it was a little too strong at times.  The Omega Crux solves that problem.  It’s still strong but it’s clean enough as a pearl that I wouldn’t call it Crux Prime slow.  I can use the Omega Crux on the fresh and the best part is it just keeps hooking.  I drilled the OC with a little bit longer pin to pap distance and that helped push it down the lane just enough.  The Omega is a great update to the Crux series!
