Pitch Purple Solid Urethane
« on: March 06, 2020, 09:04:23 AM »
The Storm Pitch Purple carries on the successful line of Pitch bowling balls in the Storm line up. The Pitch Purple introduces the Capacitor Core which offers the control and characteristics of the core in the Pitch Black but also results in the great backend motion that Storm prides itself in. This mid performance ball offers a high level of control for aggressive players while finesse players will find plenty of power at the pins. The Pitch Purple generates a long and smooth roll on difficult lane conditions due to its higher RG and lower differential. The Rev-Control Urethane coverstock was designed to offer a urethane midlane reaction as well as a responsive backend reaction giving this ball great maneuverability.

Color: Purple Solid

Pitch Purple

RG / Diff: 2.59 / .022

Ball Specs: 1000 grit - Rev- Controll Solid Urethane / Capacitor Core

Been bowling for 46 years and I have NEVER rolled an urethane ball like this before. During SPI Matchmaker events alot of the attendees would love this ball. So not knowing quite how to layout it out because of what I was seeing from the demos, I finally settled on 40 x 5 3/4 x 20 after talking with Travis Celmer, to help the back end to be a little sharper, and I was in total AWE by the motion and how much even in heavier oil in the mid to center part of the pattern, this ball to me a stronger version of the Hustle INK, which is becoming my all-time favorite ball to use on league nights. When leagues start back up after the virus scare is over, this will be the very first ball that will hit the pins for me.

Storm Pitch Purple – Not your regular Urethane!
« Reply #17 on: March 30, 2020, 07:17:15 PM »
Bowlers Info: RH tweener, PAP 4-1/2 x 7/8 up, 365 RPM, 17* of Axis tilt, 60* of Axis Rotation

Ball Layout: 25 x 4 x 40

Finish: OOB

I can make urethane hook on the backend?!?!?!  Truth be told, I was not going to give this ball a try as my lower rev rate and urethane would always equate to early hook and minimal backend motion.  I tried one at a Storm Matchmaker on fried up lanes and man oh man, where has this been for so long???  I could clear the fronts and make a urethane turn the corner on the backend, I’ve NEVER been able to do that!  I can’t tell you how excited about having this in my arsenal for when things get really tricky on sport patterns.  My Purple is drilled with a 4” pin just above my ring finger and CG kicked dead right and the finish OOB.  I tried this on the extreme outside on fresh league shot and went 237, 223 for the 1st two games.  Super impressed that I can use it on even fresh league patterns.

If you’re like me who couldn’t use urethane in the past, your solution has arrived!  This piece is a lot more versatile than urethane traditionally is.  Go talk to your PSO about this piece and continue to bowl up a Storm!

The Pitch Purple is the latest urethane-like offering in the Thunder line, joining it’s step-sibling the Pitch Black.  The Purple has the Rev Controll cover, which contains additives to give it a more resin like shape, but it’s still unmistakably urethane.  While something like the Pitch Black has a truer urethane feel, super early and very smooth, the Purple clears the heads quite a bit easier, instead digging in about halfway down the lane and continuing through the pocket.  The Pitch Purple is a great compliment to the Black for when you have to start moving left and still need the urethane shape, but can’t bend the Black enough.  I wouldn’t say it’s anything you can swing the whole lane with due to the lower amount of flare and carrydown that will create, but for me it accomplishes the goal of bridging the gap more between the Pitch Black and typical reactives.

Urethane has become a vital piece of my tournament bag of the last few years and I have had a lot of success with it, so needless to say my eyes got big when I saw the announcement of the Pitch Purple. I drilled mine 3.5 x 45* to match my Pitch Blacks.

Wow was all I could say when I first threw the Pitch Purple. It hooks about an arrow more than my Black with more shape down lane. The Pitch Purple reads oil patterns like a urethane ball but rolls like a weaker IQ Tour. When the Pitch Black doesn’t pick up and hook quite enough, the Purple is the perfect compliment. If you are a player who was not able to get traditional urethane balls to hook enough, The Pitch Purple will most likely give you the shape that higher rev players create with balls like the Pitch Black.

I see myself having a closet and bag FULL of Pitch Purples!!!

COMMENTS

Storm's Pitch Black has been a staple of the serious tournament bowler for several years now... and now it has a sidekick! The new Pitch Purple combines the same Capacitor core (2.57 RG, 0.022 diff) with the Rev Controll Solid Urethane coverstock, a tweaked version of the Pitch Black cover that provides a bit more projection and downlane responsiveness. What does this mean? It still feels VERY MUCH like urethane, but that extra bit of downlane punch goes through the pins better than any urethane I've ever used. Even for someone like me with a few extra MPH, this ball is a lot of fun to use and honestly makes me want to figure out how to use it in more situations. And if it's got this much utility PLUS it's this fun... how can you go wrong?

Color: Purple Solid

Review:
This is the kind of ball people come into the shop asking for 2… one for now, and one for later! Without seeing or feeling the coverstock one would think this ball is reactive and not urethane based on ball reaction. Compared to the Pitch Black this ball is stronger (about 5 boards on the approach for us) with a later and stronger entry angle into the pocket. The Pitch Purple is one of those rare bowling balls that comes around every so often that EVERYONE must have… similar to the original Hy-Road. After throwing the Pitch Purple for a few games you really notice how well this ball holds the pattern. It is strong enough to come back if you miss a little to the right and does not jump in the dry boards if you pull it left. If you have not thrown urethane before or have tried it in the past and have not been impressed then you need to find a matchmaker and try this out… it does not disappoint. If you are a urethane lover and need something that reacts more like a reactive bowling ball when the lanes have some oil then this is a must have in your bag. There is no doubt you will see this ball being used A LOT in tournament play.

Wood Lanes
House Shot

The new Pitch Purple is just another fantastic ball in the Storm Thunder line using the Rev Control Urethane Coverstock! This is the perfect ball in the arsenal between the IQ Emerald and the Pitch Black! The Pitch Purple has more backend than the Pitch Black and Fever Pitch and tends to drive through the pocket harder than the Fever Pitch which for me was a happy surprise! For Sure a ball every tournament bowler should have in their bag!

Storm Pitch Purple
Cover: Rev Controll Urethane
Core: Capacitor
Layout: 5 x 3 x 2.5

The Pitch Purple has the new Rev Controll Urethane cover wrapped around the Capacitor core also in the Pitch Black. I have thrown the Purple on short and medium sport pattens and shorter house patterns. I find the Purple to have a somewhat familiar feel of the Pitch Black with at least 3-5 boards more hook overall probably due to how clean (for a urethane) it is in the front part of the lane. The Black is just much much earlier and smooth. I think the Purple is a great compliment to the Black and short pin balls like my Crux Prime.

COMMENTS

I was very excited for the release of the Storm Pitch Purple because of the success I have had throwing the Pitch Black and the Pitch Blue. The Pitch Black is a ball that I try at every tournament, and most of the time the ball I throw the entire day. The Pitch Purple is proving to be a great compliment to the Pitch Black because of how much more it can hook down lane. I feel very comfortable moving into 20 and playing fairly deep with this ball. With the Pitch Black I can never get left of 15 at the arrows. I can get the Pitch Purple to hook back from right of 5, reminding me of the reaction of a reactive bowling ball. It has more back end motion than I thought was possible, but still has the control of a urethane and can be used playing outside as well as inside.

Orientation:  Right Handed
Rev Rate:  400 RPM
Speed:  16-17 MPH
PAP:  4 ½ over and ½ up

Location:  Enterprise Park Lanes, Springfield MO
Pattern:  High Volume THS
VLS Layout:  4 ½ x 4 x 4 1/8

The Pitch Purple HOOKS!  It reminds me on a weak reactive ball more than a urethane.  I can’t get my Pitch Black to corner when I get too deep, but the Pitch Purple flat out hooks on the back!  If I can’t quite get my urethane to backend, the Pitch Purple is the answer.

The Pitch Purple the newest urethane release by Storm featuring the rev control urethane cover. If you loved the pitch black but wished you could get a little more hook out of it. You got it with the pitch purple. Perfect complement to the pitch black or the perfect urethane ball if you don’t havev one in your bag. If you are a tournament bowler this is a must have.

The Pitch Purple is the latest Thunder Line release from Storm, the bowler's company. The Purple has a new coverstock called Rev Control Urethane. The Pitch Purple uses the Capacitor core that was in the Pitch Blue and Pitch Black. The numbers in 15lb weights are 2.57 Rg and 0.022 differential. The Purple comes from the factory with a 1000 grit abralon finish.

The Pitch Purple has a unique cover material, in that it is cleaner with a little more pop than that of traditional urethane when using the same surface prep. The Pitch Purple also covers more boards than most all urethane balls on the market today. I drilled the Purple with a 4 x 3 (4” pin, 3” pin buffer) layout. This layout is basically my benchmark layout, and gives me the most usability on the widest range of patterns. Comparing the Purple to 3.75 x 3 Pitch Black, the Purple is a 3 and 2 move in, with more continuation through the backend. The Purple doesn’t lane shine as quick as the Pitch Black. Even though the Purple doesn’t lane shine as quickly, I still need to keep the cover clean with my shammy after every shot to have a consistent reaction. The Purple will be a good ball to use on beat up old wood lanes when my Pitch Black hooks too soon, and too even, and I need to open the pattern up a touch.

The Pitch Purple is a good ball, but is a very specific reaction. It’s more angular than traditional urethane, but doesn’t respond to friction like true reactive balls do. To me, it’s like a baby cousin to the Spec cover that is on the Crux Prime and Gravity Evolve. I think the Pitch Purple will work well for players with lower rev rates that struggle to get a Pitch Black to carry on short patterns, but see too much dart/dive with their lower end reactive equipment. Rev dominant players will see the most pattern coverage out of this ball, ranging from a big curve on low volumes, and usability on medium conditions as well. Thank you for reading my review of the Pitch Purple.
