Description: Storm is known for producing the best high performance balls on the market. When the Virtual Gravity was released in 2008, it not only turned heads but gave bowlers of all skill levels an unprecedented amount of hook on even the oiliest lanes imaginable. The new Virtual Gravity Nano is intended to create a similar yet stronger ball motion built specifically for heavy oil. This can be accomplished with either a stronger coverstock (texture) or more aggressive weight block (lower radius of gyration or increased differential). As the original Virtual Gravity quickly became Storm‟s all-time best seller, the new Nano is sure to follow in its footsteps...and yes, those are big shoes to fill! Looking at the original Virtual Gravity, the Shape-Lock HD weight block/core system produced a fast-revving action that especially helped bowlers looking for a stronger change of direction usually privy to only those with big rev rates! The Shape-Lock HD motor will continue to power the Nano as well. A breakthrough in coverstock technology rarely happens due to the complex nature of chemistry and polymer science. But Storm's research and development team is committed to maintaining the "pole position" in bowling innovation, so it's no surprise that we are changing the game yet again with the new NRG cover. With Nanotechnology, NRG will give bowlers increased oil traction due to the micro-dynamic enhancements of the surface. Just looking at the surface of the new NRG material shows you the increased surface texture between the peaks and valleys, as well as the more aggressive edges on the top of the peaks! We're continuing to push the envelope; we just hope you are ready for it.

Subject- First impressions of the Nano

I’ve been fortunate to be with the Storm Staff for 7 years now. In that time I’ve thrown just about every piece of equipment. Did they all work for my style and conditions that I encountered? No. But there are those balls that you get and you just know, after just one shot that it’s going to be special… Well, after one night throwing the Nano, this ball is one of those.

To give you a little background on my style- I throw 15 lbs, and still seem to throw it through the breakpoint at times. Approximately 19 mph off my hand and around 250 revs. As you can see, I am quite speed dominate. Some of my favorite balls have been- Virtual Gravity, T Road Solid & Hy-Road. I tend to go with stronger pin to pap distances and longer pin buffers, extra holes near P3-P4, lots of surface… Anything to help get the ball to SLOW DOWN… Also I seem to be handcuffed once the outside burns up and I have to get inside and try to get around the shot. Well, that has all changed!

I punched the Virtual Gravity Nano with a 4x4x3.5 and an extra hole in between the P2-P3 quadrant. I was bowling on a 40ft. 4:1 league shot… As the night wore on, and I had to start moving inside- I couldn’t believe the recovery that I was getting! I played where ever I wanted and it still took a left turn and sent messengers almost every shot and I was throwing it very hard. It excites me to see how it will play again on other conditions as it gives me a boost of confidence that no condition will be unplayable.

Likes: I bowled with it for the first time last night but I don't know all the technical lingo.  All I know is that I started with the Anarchy, kept leaving the 10 pin, switched to a tamed down Invasion and finished the first game with 215.  Started leaving 10s again, then left a 7-10 in the pocket and went to the Nano - had the last 7 for 236.  Finished with clean 213 but I made a couple of bad shots that left multiple pin spares.  When I threw it correctly, the carry was awesome and I don't have much speed (11-12 mph).  It really got through the heads nicely and didn't overreact on the back end.  The guys in my scratch draft trio league were impressed with it.  I would recommend this ball to anyone, including little old ladies like me who only throw 14 pounds!

Likes: Ok, i dont really know much about what makes up a bowling ball i can say that the proshop drilled this ball with the pin roughly an inch to an inch and a half above and to the right of the ring finger (right handed) NEVER in my life have i had to stand so deep with a ball! I was standing with my foot about 35 board and sending this ball to 10 board, and blowing the pocket to pieces. I am not a storm worker and im sure, sure that i will soon find a condition where this ball is "uncontrollable" BUT  for now i am extremely happy with this ball.

If you have a ball right now, and are having what i like to call the "wet noodle" effect. meaning your ball is hitting the pins with little or no power.... THIS BALL WILL FIX THAT. This ball is a firm reminder of why Storm is the best ball maker around!!!!!

I love this piece and im sure with the right drilling you will to.

AVG: 195

I am a speed dominate bowler, meaning more speed then revs!

Good luck!!!

Dislikes: NONE this ball even smells great! Woot!!!!!!

Likes: Went 4x4x2, or for you Dual angle guys it works out to about 40-4-35.  Went to all Storm several weeks ago and have since worked with Chris Sand in a video session.  Discovered I have been clearing my thumb way too early which had me getting the ball started on it's Y axis pretty much and burning energy as soon as I Iet it go, which made carry tough.  Found too much rev pitch in the thumb and corrected it which made a huge difference in pretty much everything.  Had started with a Reign Supreme and an Anarchy and wanted to add a monster as a third piece and was suggested to wait on the Nano.  Funny, as when I went to the shop to final fit had found out Chris had just been there and made the suggestion to my driller not to go too aggressive with this ball.  Better to go tame and use a courser abrolon to get a little more out of it if needed.  Tim mentioned he had just drilled mine at 4x4x2 and wished he had known this earlier so I was a little curious to see this bad boy on the lane and if it would be controlable in hearing this.  Didn't really buy it for a THS, more for State and Nationals but wanted to play around anyway in league last night.  Sic ball motion but not the overeaction off the dry or loss of energy you would expect to normally see in a piece with this finish and seeing so many VG when they where the ticket.  I had an Invasion last year and could NEVER get it to wind up like this ball does!!  Did not throw it in practice once.  Had a decent look with the Anarchy as I have.  Been a little struggle the first game with the over under on fresh and not carrying well so I figured I'd try it anyway knowing the Anarchy was there.  First frame lost it off my hand and didn't get it to the pocket,1-2-8.  Spared it and added a piece of tape, left a solid 10 and still felt a pinch loose so added 1 more piece of tape.  Ran the next nine.  Really smoothed out the over under on the puddle with slight misses in setting up flush and slight misses out coming back to the hole and driving pins all over.  Light hits this thing really lays them down.  I was under the ball and just coming up the backside of it with a little longer approach so I wasn't grabbing it too much.  Still, was against the return setting the ball down at 35 and crossing the arrows at 20.  With this hand position ball never pushed past 10 at the break. Once that started to cook as the night went on and I had to get deeper I changed hand position which gets me some tilt and easily got the ball down lane and out to 8 at the break.  I didn't have to, and normally would not have stuck with this in a strong handicap league but wanted to test the extremes.  Ended up the night at about 40 over 23.  Wide misses never over reacted and tugs still set up as there was still plenty of puddle left of my track.  I'm ancious to check this out Monday night in the PBAX league on this year Nationals pattern as I had a really good look with my Anarchy this last week.  Curious to see if it gives me a little more miss right but still reads the little bit of hold I was seeing with the Anarchy.  I'll post results Tuesday

Dislikes: Smell on this is Orange Mint and it smells like fast orange hand cleaner.

drastic turn for the pocket.   Requires lots of oil to hold its line.

Likes: Not the ball I expected although I may have been TOO far right and in the heavier outside oil.  Had a decent look last week on this with my Anarchy and in having just got the Nano Thursday when they came in wanted to try it on the open pattern.  Ended up about 3 or 4 left with my feet compared to the Anarchy which I had a great look with going up 8-9.  With the Nano it was more 11 out to 8 and early on didn't have the recovery I hoped to see.  Had an OK look as long as It was at 8 at the break, but 6, 10pins across the first two games even though they where clean games doesn't add up to much if they are between strikes, 200+, 190+.   Swiched to the Anarchy and had a similar look as last week but it went quick with a couple guys playing 3rd arow in.  Anything pulled hooked up and normally that isn't a problem as I prefer to go deeper.  But I tweaked my Knee last week and couldn't get a good plant in and struggled with over under.  If I got a plant it was pretty decent look inside, but if I felt a twinge and backed off it was over under.

Dislikes:  I went fairly aggresive 4x4x2 on the layout, but on this volume I could easily see the ball going too long if I was a pinch wide.  It would scream back but leave 10's every time which was frustrating.  Go more speed and keep it tighter and it crushed the hole.  With the Anarchy being less ball it was easy to go up 8-9-10 and the ball really faced up to the pocket nice.  Never got that look wide with this and having to give it some room.

BALL REACTION

Nanolicious! This ball  serves up 1 orange serving to every 10 pins standing!

One  word, SICK! This  nugget is not sick because it dead hooks off of my  hand, it is sick because it  just takes control of whatever is in front  of it. My friend commented that it  did not look any different than the  Virtual Gravity in warm-ups and then he saw  the magic. As the frames go  by with this ball in hand, my area to miss grows  size triple XL! With  the flair rings starting next to the middle finger and  ending about 1"  from ring finger, there is constantly a new piece of skin  touching the  surface. So what's the big deal between the Nano and the original?  For  one, the Nano reads  quicker, note I did not say it stops getting down  the lane. It processes the  mids like a mathamatical genius adding 1+1  and then it sees the back ends. This  monster keeps on getting it too.  There were times when my VG would not tip  playing deep but the Nano is  like Bone Crusher's song, "Never Scared!" This ball  is a grown man so  find some oil to play with when you pull it  out.

Everything you read  about this ball opening the pattern, TRUE TRUE TRUE!

I have only had three outings with this ball, and have thrown it a total of 5 games. I got a rare chance to practice Wednesday, and the lane man was kind enough to freshen up a pair for a group of us. I am writing this review for those who, like me, wanted a realistic comparison between the original VG and the Nano, but really could not find the info I was looking for before I punched my Nano up.

I have two Virtual Gravities, one drilled leverage, one drilled pin under, 5x5x3.  I decided to drill the Nano 5 x 5 x 4, which ended up pin up, over my ring finger.

To get to the point, the Nano is 5 to 7 boards stronger than the original Virtual Gravity. It is an oiler. If your A game is moving inside and chasing the oil, the Nano will do what the Virtual Gravity struggled with---recover and reserve enough energy to kick out the ten pin from as deep as you need to play. My preference is to ball down and play straigter on a THS.

For me, this will be a condition specific ball. I can not wait to see a true sport, flat shot with volume. That is where this ball in OOB will shine.

I could adjust the surface and get good use out of this ball on our house shot. But, my two Virtual Gravities and one thousand other balls cover that pretty good. The Nano in OOB gives me the smooth and consistent virtual gravity like reaction, but is designed to be used on heavier volumes.

BALL REACTION

Length: Good Length- This ball easily got through the heads even later into the night.  I was able to keep the ball out for all 3 games.

Back End: Very Nice!  I was surprised how much energy this ball stored for the backend- Amazing!  The moment the ball hit dry lane, it immediately took off towards the pocket.

Overall Hook: Very Good- This ball can cover many boards without using up all its energy.  It should work well on a heavier pattern.

Midlane Read: Good- This ball reads the midlane well and without getting too 'jumpy.' It set up about 40' down the lane and just went!

Breakpoint Shape: Angular- Again Storm comes out with another heavy hitter.

COMMENTS

Likes:  Another great product from Storm Bowling.  With this being a solid ball I was expecting to have more of a controlled arc- but what I found was something better.  A solid ball that stores energy like a pearlized version- what a great combo!  This ball revs up extremely quick after finding some dry on the lanes.

Dislikes: None to report thus far...

COMMENTS

We bowl on a modified version of the 2011 pattern, added an extra foot to the pattern to get it closer due to worn surface. Has played fairly similiar to the actual shot at Nationals for the last couple years -- with just a touch more friction than is at the tournament.

Likes:Loved my Virtual Gravity, so put a similiar layout on this ball. Pin 4.5 inches from PAP under ring, cg right of thumb, MB 3.5 from VAL. Ball starts up quick, really reads the midlanes and has strong continuation through the pins. Compared to the VG, this ball is much stronger in the mids, with better continuation which allows it to be in play longer than the VG was... very much agree with Riggs' statement in his review that it makes you want to throw it longer than you probably should.

I used an 85X70 dual angle layout with a 5 3/8 in. pin on my Virtual Gravity Nano. It reads a little bit earlier than the original Virtual Gravity for me, but it is no slouch when it comes to backend either. I can play all over the lane with it, whether it be playing straighter with a different hand position or moving in and opening up the lane. Either way, I can get a predictable and controllable reaction from it that is tough to beat on anything from house patterns to medium or longer sport patterns. The cover is also very easy to make adjustments to. I have used my Nano on multiple patterns already, such as a typical house pattern, the PBA Shark pattern, a 47 ft. flat sport pattern, and a 40 ft. flat sport pattern. My Nano gave me a strong, predictable roll on every pattern I used it on, which made it much easier to play the sport patterns and the Shark pattern. On the house shot, which was about 40 ft., it read the mid-lane well but was continuous when it made its move. Generally, I try to avoid going with something too early-rolling on house patterns because of the tendency for early-rolling balls to lose too much energy and flatten out, but that wasn’t an issue with the Nano. It still drives through the pins like it never lost much energy. Overall, I am very impressed with the Nano. It is no surprise to me that Storm has released another great piece of equipment that would be a great addition to any arsenal!

PAP: 5 3/4 right, 3/4 up

Style: Tweener

Speed: 18.5 mph

Rev Rate: 440 rpm

Layout: 35* 4 1/4" 35* with P3 hole

Forget all you have ever known about the Virtual Gravity.  The Nano may come in the same color scheme and core, but the coverstock makes it feel like a completely different ball.  Obviously, I compared the Nano to my Original Gravity (50* 4 7/8" 35* with P4 hole).  Even with my above average speed, I found myself playing deeper from the start than usual with this ball.  32-17-6 to be exact (feet/target/breakpoint) with my normal speed and release.

I tried playing the same line with my Gravity, and swear I heard it laugh when it got to the breakpoint, not really making much of an attempt to recover downlane.  However, not only moving right, but tightening my line (26-14-8) made the original read the lane properly and finish hard through the pins.  Maybe the gap would have been closer if they both had the same layout, but each definitely has their time and place.

At first, I really didn't get the point of releasing the Nano, and moreso was expecting a Hybrid version of the Invasion/Anarcy.  All the heresay and videos made me buy into the hype.  Seeing the ball come off my hand, seeing it rev up down lane and seeing it recover has me now believing the hype.  I got overall ball motion and constant solid pocket shots that I've not seen in quite sometime.

BOTY?  Maybe, maybe not.  However, it's a very good ball for me that will see the true heavy oil.

I stone 8s and 9s like its cool...

COMMENTS

Likes: I like how the Nano reads the midlane and still has more down lane continuation.

Dislikes: shorter and lighter volume patterns

I have two drilled two Nano's.

The first Nano was drilled with a the pin 5" from pap and the mb at 5" with no hole. The intent for this ball is to play straighter. The high pin gives me a quicker response to friction and then this ball rolls more forward instead of going sideways. Compared to an Invasion that I have drilled similar this Nano hooks about 3' sooner and a total of 4-5 boards more.

The second Nano I put one my favorite laouts for assymetrical balls. The pin is on my grip centerline 1" above the center of my grip. The mb is at 45 degree angle with no hole. To be able to do this with no hole I got a ball with the cg slightly left of the pin and mb. My intent with this ball was to be able to open up the lane. With the lower pin the ball is more continuous downlane. I'm able to go more left to right with this Nano. I have a Virtual Gravity drilled exactly like this Nano. They have been a good compiment to each other. When I can start with the Nano I'm able to switch to the Virtual Gravity in most cases as the Nano hooks to soon. This normally allows me stay in the same part of the lane with the same angles a little longer.

If you're looking for a ball to conquer longer and heavier patterns the Virtual Gravity Nano is the ball for you.
